This study aimed to explore the impact of calligraphy training on the emotional well-being of college students,as well as the mediating roles of state mindfulness and rumination in this relationship, using a cross-sectional design (N = 120) and longitudinal (N = 157) design. The cross-sectional study compared the means of rumination, state mindfulness and the positive and negative emotions between long-term calligraphy experience group (≥3 years of practice) and control group. With 24 - week structured calligraphy intervention, the longitudinal study further tested the effect of calligraphy pr

The emotion regulation choice framework (Sheppes, 2020) proposes that the affective intensity of a stressor (i.e., how distressing a stressor is) influences the selection of emotion regulation strategies. The present study aimed to test this hypothesis in the context of enacted stigma to determine whether more distressing enacted stigma experiences differentially predict the use of different emotion regulation strategies. We also aimed to determine if enacted stigma experiences that are more distressing have larger and longer term effects on affect and to examine daily factors that may increas

INTRODUCTION: Autobiographical reasoning is the mental process of making sense of life experiences by connecting them to one's sense of self and life story. After a traumatic event, individuals may engage in ruminations and coping strategies but the relations between these processes and autobiographical reasoning remain poorly understood. Furthermore, autobiographical reasoning encompasses several dimensions that may reflect different mental health outcomes. Our objectives are to compare three dimensions of autobiographical reasoning (interpretations, exploratory processing, and meaning-making

Emerging evidence from laboratory stressor studies suggests gender/sex differences in the relationship between the tendency to ruminate and prolonged activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, as well as elevated levels of its end-product, cortisol. However, research on rumination and diurnal cortisol, particularly in relation to HPA activity and gender/sex differences, is limited. The primary aim of the present study was to extend laboratory findings to a naturalistic setting. Diurnal cortisol slope (DCS), a measure of typical decline in cortisol throughout the day, was exam

BACKGROUND: Prior research has explored the links between emotion regulation, rumination, and problematic alcohol use. However, the extant literature has yet to investigate daily fluctuations among these factors on drinking and non-drinking days comparatively.
METHOD: College student drinkers (n = 85; 64 % female; M age = 20.04 years) were enrolled in a 21-day ecological momentary assessment study (EMA) examining rumination, via the brooding subscale of the ruminative response scale, and emotion, from the mood circumplex model, on both drinking and non-drinking days. Participants completed up

OBJECTIVES: Common mental disorders (CMD) are associated with impaired frontal excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance and reduced grey matter volume (GMV). Larger GMV (in the areas that are implicated in CMD-pathology) and improved CMD-symptomatology have been observed in individuals who adhere to high quality diets. Moreover, preclinical studies have shown altered neurometabolites (primarily gamma-aminobutyric acid: GABA and glutamate: GLU) in relation to diet quality. However, neurochemical correlates of diet quality and how these neurobiological changes are associated with CMD and with its tra

Rumination is a common symptom in major depressive disorder (MDD). Previous work has connected individual differences in rumination to structural properties in various brain regions. Some of these, such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), have also been highlighted as being altered in MDD, suggesting a connection between structural changes and ruminative symptoms. Although informative, such localised relations have limitations in the context of a network view of the brain. To further investigate rumination-related structural changes in depression, and to situate these within potenti

OBJECTIVE: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is increasingly used to monitor depressive symptoms in clinical trials, but little is known about the comparability of its outcomes to those of clinical interviews and questionnaires. In our study, we administered EMA and questionnaires to measure change in depressive symptoms and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) in a clinical trial and investigated (a) the size of intervention effects associated with both techniques and (b) their validity in predicting clinical interview outcomes (i.e., global functioning).

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that natural disasters, such as earthquakes, can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with women being particularly vulnerable. However, there is a dearth of knowledge about the underlying mechanisms linking traumatic experiences to PTSD as well as gender differences in the operation of these mechanisms. This study examined the mediating effect of intrusive rumination and the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between earthquake exposure level and PTSD symptoms.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted 12 months after the devastati

Although many investigators have examined symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), the multivariate relations among these features of depression and their relative associations with overall severity of depression are not well understood. The present study is the first to examine the underlying factor structure of depression across a broad set of constructs and to model the multivariate association of these factors with the overall severity of depression. We conducted a large-scale factor analysis and multiple regression in a sample of participants diagnosed with MDD (N = 233) and healthy c

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is commonly observed in trauma survivors. Information on PTG and its predictors among burn survivors is relatively limited. The present study sought to investigate the prevalence and predictors of PTG in burn survivors. The predictors of interest included the variables from Tedeschi and Calhoun's model of PTG (core belief challenge, deliberate rumination, trauma disclosure, and perceived social support) and positive personality attributes (resilience, grateful disposition, and dispositional forgiveness).
METHOD: Participants were 116 burn survivors of the

BACKGROUND: Rumination, particularly brooding rumination, is associated with suicide risk, ideation and attempts; however, findings are inconsistent with respect to reflective rumination. Recent research suggests reflective rumination might be associated with increased suicide risk specifically among vulnerable individuals. Poor sleep quality is related to both suicide risk and rumination, yet no research has examined whether reflective rumination and sleep quality interact in relation to suicidal risk. This study, therefore, examined whether sleep quality moderates the link between ruminative

Psychopathology in adolescents from seven countries: What role does controlling identity development and family relationships play? Abstract. This study analyzed the unique effects of gender and culture on psychopathology in adolescents from seven countries, after controlling for factors that might have contributed to variations in psychopathology. In a sample of 2259 adolescents (M = 15 years; 54 % female) from France, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Peru, Pakistan, and Poland, we assessed identity development, maternal parenting (support, psychological control, anxious rearing), and psychopathology

Suicide constitutes a public health problem that has a significant economic, social and psychological impact on a global scale. Recently, the American Psychological Association has indicated that suicide prevention should be a public health priority. Suicidal ideation appears as a key variable in suicide prevention. The objective of this research was to verify the adjustment of an explanatory model for suicidal ideation, which considers the effects of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, affectivity and hopelessness. An open mode on-line sample of 2,166 Argentine participants was used and

Many adolescents will experience pain at some point in their development that can lead to poor quality of life. The largest risk factor for pain is tendencies to magnify and ruminate on pain, known as pain catastrophizing. One mechanism of catastrophizing may be difficulties with executive function, or the ability to cognitively control information. The objective of the current study was to determine if adolescent executive function difficulties relate to high catastrophizing and pain. Fifty adolescents completed measures of pain, pain catastrophizing, and executive function. Path models revea

The effectiveness of a new treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is addressed. Treatment was based on a metacognitive theory of mechanisms by which natural traumatic processing is enabled or hindered by coping strategies. It suggests that elimination of worry/rumination, of maladaptive attention strategies, and enhancing metacognitive flexibility, will permit natural processing and a return to normal cognition. An A-B direct replication series (n = 6) with follow-up assessments at 3, 6, and 18-41 months was implemented. Treatment commenced 3-10 months post-trauma. All patients sh

This study deals with psychological aspects of coping observed in gynecological cancer patients--on the one hand with behavioral, emotional and cognitive reactions to the disease and on the other hand with the efficiency value of these mechanisms in handling the disease. As one important aspect, the attitude towards control of the disease should be correlated with the coping process. Accordingly, the results demonstrate a correlation between high self-responsibility and positive appraisal of the disease: Women who believe they are in control of the disease try harder to fight the disease and i

BACKGROUND: Parenting stress evokes harsh discipline and induces internalizing problems in children and adolescents. To test this hypothesis, this study examined the potential mediating role of harsh discipline in the association between parenting stress and internalizing problems in children and adolescents while considering the moderating effect of emotion regulation.
METHODS: Two studies were conducted: Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey using questionnaires (N = 971), and Study 2 implemented a three-week online parental intervention training program combining courses and psychological d

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: COVID Stress Syndrome (CSS) is a new type of health anxiety triggered by the COVID epidemic. However, we know little about the causal relationship with CSS symptoms and the temporal and dynamic interactions between symptoms and cognitive processes associated with health anxiety.
DESIGN: During the epidemic of COVID-19, 193 Chinese university students completed experience sampling methods on CSS symptoms and related constructs of health anxiety three times a day for 14 days.
METHODS: Multilevel vector autoregressive (mlVAR) models were used to estimate contemporaneo

Although stress is an inevitable part of everyday life, its chronicity, severity, and perceived burden can result in enduring distress, which may manifest as heightened emotionality, contributing to a number of self-regulatory failures. Specifically, distress disorders are characterized, in part, by heightened sensitivity to underlying motivational systems related to threat/safety, reward/loss, or both. Further, individuals suffering from these conditions typically engage in perseverate negative thinking (e.g., worry, rumination, self-criticism) in an effort to manage motivationally relevant d
