Three-dimensional evaluation of mandibular canine impaction characteristics and their relationship with lower incisor root morphometry.

BACKGROUND: To three-dimensionally evaluate the characteristics of mandibular canine impaction with the morphometry of the roots of the lower incisors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 35 individuals (18 males and 17 females) with a mean age of 14.37± 10.26 years were evaluated. Forty-three impacted mandibular canines (IMbC) were evaluated. Their location, sector and level of impaction were determined. Likewise, the distances of the canines to the occlusal plane, the angulations with respect to the midline and adjacent lateral incisors, the length of the imp

Prosthetic rehabilitation of maxillary and mandibular gunshot defects with fixed basal implant-supported prostheses: A 5-year follow-up case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gunshot injuries to the oral maxillofacial region have serious aesthetic and functional consequences. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 32-year-old male patient presented with a marginal mandibular resection owing to a gunshot wound. A clinical examination revealed destroyed crowns in teeth 12, 11, and 21; extraction in teeth 13, 22, 24, 31, 32-45; a fracture in tooth 38; and severe pain. Further, he had multiple submental scars and a completely obliterated sulcus. Consequently, a multidisciplinary team was formed who devised the following treatment plan: stage 1, root canal treatment for

Prophylaxis of impacted teeth using MRI and focal ultra-sound ablation?… a feasible hypothesis.

UNLABELLED: Teeth start as bi-layered epithelial soft tissue follicles within bony jaws. Follicles grow into teeth and erupt. Early third molar follicles are detectable 8-9 years (±9 months). Intra-oral dental arches of jaws have finite space accommodating formed crowns. The last teeth to erupt are third molars. When the space needed by all the teeth exceeds the total arch space available, wisdom teeth may become impacted in bone. Lower impactions are more prevalent due to the mandible shape, and impaction associated pathologies with erupting partially or totally impacted teeth are common. Imp

Long-term vertical changes of the anterior maxillary teeth adjacent to single implants in young and mature adults. A retrospective study.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of the tooth eruption process on the position of teeth adjacent to implant-borne restorations in adult patients compared to patients in their late adolescence. SUBJECT AND METHODS: The sample included 28 patients divided into two groups. A "young adult" group consisting of 14 patients, aged from 15.5 to 21 years, and a "mature adult" group consisting of 14 patients, aged from 40 to 55 years. All patients presented missing anterior teeth, requiring insertion of 40 implant fixtures (16 central incisors, 12 lateral incisors, 12 canines). The implants were of the Stra

Adhesion of stainable, calcium-rich deposits on substrata with different surface free energies. An in vivo study in beagle dogs.

Calculus plays an important role in chronic inflammatory periodontal disease and tooth loss. Patients can suffer from calculus formation despite good oral hygiene. The strength of adhesion between calculus and the enamel surface, though not determinant for the formation of calculus itself, determines whether calculus remains on the teeth during eating and toothbrushing. In this study, the amount and the strength of adhesion of calcium-rich deposits formed in vivo on different materials are related to substrate surface free energies (sfe). In 4 beagle dogs, fenestrated crowns were made on the u

The remodeling pattern of human mandibular alveolar bone during prenatal formation from 19 to 270mm CRL.

The underlying mechanisms of human bone morphogenesis leading to a topologically specific shape remain unknown, despite increasing knowledge of the basic molecular aspects of bone formation and its regulation. The formation of the alveolar bone, which houses the dental primordia, and later the dental roots, may serve as a model to approach general questions of bone formation. Twenty-five heads of human embryos and fetuses (Radlanski-Collection, Berlin) ranging from 19mm to 270mm (crown-rump-length) CRL were prepared as histological serial sections. For each stage, virtual 3D-reconstructions we

[Development of a periodontium-approximated specimen holder for attrition studies of telescopic crowns].

To enable attritional studies on telescopic crowns, a specimen holder has been constructed that is intended to simulate, in zero approximation, the biomechanical properties of abutments bearing telescopic crowns. The specimen holder consists essentially of a system with two metal "concertinas" with different elasticity constants reflecting the different biomechanical parameters for periodontium and bone. The biomechanical processes in the periodontium are too complex to be simulated accurately in vitro. Nevertheless, the specimen holder described here enables the forces acting during insertion

Tooth-supported telescopic prostheses in compromised dentitions: a clinical report.

This article describes indications for treatment with telescopic restorations on patients with periodontally and endodontically compromised dentitions that require splinting, with special emphasis on treatment that restores the entire dental arch. Stabilization of compromised teeth with fixed splinted restorations is usually inadvisable because of the risk factors involved, such as eventual localized abutment failure. Detachable telescopic prostheses may be preferred as a near equivalent or substitute because they can be detached and repaired without reconstruction of the entire restoration. R

Photo-elastic stress analysis of initial alignment archwires.

Photo-elastic models replicating a lower arch with a moderate degree of lower incisor crowding and a palatally displaced maxillary canine were used to evaluate the stresses transmitted to the roots of the teeth by initial alignment archwires. Six initial alignment archwires were compared, two multi-strand stainless steel wires, two non-super-elastic (stabilized martensitic form) nickel titanium wires, and two stress-induced super-elastic (austenitic active) nickel titanium wires. Three specimens of each archwire type were tested. Analysis of the photo-elastic fringe patterns, in the medium sup

Arch parameters and dental discrepancy (crowding and spacing) in a sample of an Afro-Colombian population.

The aim of this study was to determine the differences in arch length, inter-canine distance, inter-premolar distance, intermolar distance and arch shape between dental discrepancies (crowding and spacing) in a sample of dental casts from the Afro-Colombian population of San Basilio de Palenque. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 63 subjects aged 11 to 57years, of Afro-Colombian origin, with full dentition from first molar to first molar, without extensive caries or restorations, and excluding casts with defects due to loss. The differences between ar

Factors affecting root migration after coronectomy of the mandibular third molar.

Nerve injury especially inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is the one of the complications that occur when the mandibular third molar (M3) is extracted and in case of high risk patients, coronectomy might be an alternative to tooth extraction. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze root migration and its influencing factors at 6 months after coronectomy in both 2- and 3-dimensions using periapical view and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). We analyzed 33 cases of root remnant after coronectomy and measured the amount of migration in CBCT. The following factors that could possibl

Medical-dental findings and management of a child with infantile Refsum disease: a case report.

Infantile Refsum disease (IRD) is a peroxisome biogenesis disorder (PBD), and is part of a larger group of diseases called leukodystrophies, which are inherited conditions that damage the white matter of the brain and affect motor movements. Multiple signs and symptoms of IRD begin in infancy and progress through early childhood, including hearing and visual impairment, intellectual and growth impairment, seizures, liver involvement, and orofacial and dental abnormalities. This paper presents a case history of a 12-year-old female patient with IRD who underwent dental rehabilitation in the ope

Developmental changes of mandibular permanent canines and premolars in early mixed dentition.

This study investigated the developmental changes of mandibular permanent canines and premolars in early mixed dentition using panoramic radiographs. Positions of cusps and root apices of the teeth relative to the inferior border of mandible were evaluated. The developmental stages of the teeth were divided into three stages. There were few changes in the inclination of the three teeth. The permanent canine began to erupt before stage 2 and the second premolar began to erupt after stage 2. The distance between the inferior border of the mandible and apices of the three teeth was almost fixed i

Dental erosion in Cuban children associated with excessive consumption of oranges.

Marked erosion at the mesial edges of upper front teeth was observed during an examination of Cuban children. The preferential erosion of mesial edges produced characteristic V-shaped defects on upper central incisors, and the aim of the present study, carried out on 12-yr-old children (N = 1010) in 10 communities in the Province of Havana was to establish the frequency of dental erosion and explain its occurrence. The symmetrical erosion of teeth 11 and 21 (excluding crown injuries and attrition) were clinically classified into four grades: 0.5 = objectionable; 1 = abnormal mesial shortening

A modified surgical/prosthetic approach for optimal single implant supported crown. Part I--The socket seal surgery.

Optimal implant placement can be achieved only if the ridge maintains its dimensions and the quality of bone. To prevent the resorption of the ridge and to enhance the quality of regenerated bone, two main approaches have been suggested. Part I of this article presents a modified regenerative technique-the "socket seal surgery" (SSS). Part II will present a modified prosthetic technique--the "cervical contouring concept" (CCC)--and it will be published in the May, 1994, issue of PP&A. The learning objective of this article is to supplement reader knowledge of methods and techniques for prevent
