Characterization of a novel ENU-generated myosin VI mutant mouse strain with congenital deafness and vestibular dysfunction.

Myosin VI (Myo6) is known to play an important role in the mammalian auditory and vestibular systems. We have identified a novel N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea mutagenised mouse strain, charlie, carrying an intronic Myo6 splice site mutation. This mutation (IVS5+5G > A) results in skipping of exon 5, and is predicted to cause a frameshift and premature termination of the protein. We detected essentially no Myo6 transcript in tissue from charlie homozygous mutant mice (Myo6(chl/chl)). Myo6(chl/chl) mice exhibit vestibular dysfunction and profound hearing impairment when first tested at four weeks of age

Significance of the development of the inner ear third window effect after endolymphatic sac surgery in Ménière disease patients.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The goal of this study was to identify the clinical significance of the low-frequency air-bone gap (LFABG) that often develops after endolymphatic sac surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. METHODS: Sixteen patients who had been diagnosed with definite Ménière disease and underwent endolymphatic sac surgery were studied. The surgical outcome was evaluated based on the 1995 guidelines of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The number of patients who developed LFABGs (a mean air-bone gap >10 dB HL at 250, 500, and 1,000 Hz) after surgery was

Telling friend from foe in emergency vertigo and dizziness: does season and daytime of presentation help in the differential diagnosis?

Distinguishing between serious (e.g., stroke) and benign (e.g., benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, BPPV) disorders remains challenging in emergency consultations for vertigo and dizziness (VD). A number of clues from patient history and clinical examination, including several diagnostic index tests have been reported recently. The objective of the present study was to analyze frequency and distribution patterns of specific vestibular and non-vestibular diagnoses in an interdisciplinary university emergency room (ER), including data on daytime and season of presentation. A retrospective char

Vestibular neuronitis: epidemiological survey by questionnaire in Japan.

An epidemiological survey on vestibular neuronitis in Japan was conducted by means of a questionnaire filled in by major neuro-otology clinics (otolaryngologists) during 1988-1990 (3 years). The diagnostic criteria of vestibular neuronitis settled on in 1986 by the Standardization Committee of the Japan Society of Equilibrium Research were applied. Gross analysis of questionnaire answers showed that i) there was no sexual difference, ii) the peak of age distribution was between 40-50 years, iii) about 30% of all cases had had common colds prior to the disease, the rate being highest among chil

Mal de debarquement syndrome: a forgotten entity?

Mal de debarquement syndrome is defined by a persistent sensation of rocking and swaying commonly felt with sea travel that is first noted on return to land. Mal de debarquement syndrome is not to be confused with seasickness, which causes nausea, vomiting, diaphoresis, and headache. Four female patients with mal de debarquement syndrome are reviewed. Mal de debarquement is normally a short-lived phenomenon. The need for extensive evaluations may be avoided by an awareness of this entity.

Impact of Bilateral Vestibulopathy on Spatial and Nonspatial Cognition: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is considered an independent risk factor for dementia. Growing evidence in animal and human studies suggest that not only hearing loss but also vestibular loss might result in cognitive deficits. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence of spatial and nonspatial cognitive deficits in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy. As different causes of bilateral vestibulopathy are associated with hearing loss, the objective is to evaluate if these cognitive deficits are due to the vestibular loss of the patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, or to their hearin

Psychological traumatization and adverse life events in patients with organic and functional vestibular symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: . A relationship has frequently been found between a history of traumatization and the existence of somatoform symptoms. The objective of this study was to examine whether this relationship is also observed for functional, i.e. medically not sufficiently explained, vestibular symptoms (FVS). We tested whether patients with FVS and organically explained vestibular symptoms (OVS) differ with regard to frequencies of previous traumatic experiences and posttraumatic stress symptoms. We also explored whether the impact of previous trauma was associated with characteristics of vestibular
