Recent advances in the aetiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

The aetiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is still unknown despite many years of research effort. Theories on AIS's aetiology have included mechanical, hormonal, metabolic, neuromuscular, growth, and genetic abnormalities. Amongst these, some factors may be epiphenomena rather than the cause itself. Other factors may even contribute to curve progression, rather than curve initiation. Current views maintain that AIS is a multifactorial disease with genetic predisposing factors [Lowe et al. in J Bone Joint Surg [Am] 82:1157-1168, 2000]. With improvements in diagnostic methods, imagi

Developmentally tailored school-based interventions for substance use disorders: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: School-based prevention programs among adolescents tackle the umbrella of substance use behavior from initiation to dependence. Age-appropriate interventions give us an overview about what works in each stage of development. A substantial population of adolescents in India are engaging into substance use behavior that in turn will lead to delayed brain development and lead to engaging in multiple risk behavior. AIM: This review aims to discuss the developmental considerations and evidence for school-based substance use prevention intervention across different age groups of adolesc

Adolescent gambling: research and clinical implications.

Gambling is a popular and prevalent behavior among adolescents. As compared with adults, adolescents have been found to have high rates of problem and pathological gambling. However, relatively few adolescents seek help for gambling problems. In this article, we review adolescent gambling, including problem and pathological levels. We consider the neurobiology of adolescent gambling, health correlates of different levels of gambling participation, and manners in which current prevention and treatment strategies might be further developed and optimized.

Urban neighborhood factors influencing adolescent health and well-being: A qualitative study among adolescent boys in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Adolescent health and well-being is significantly influenced by the urban living environment. This study examined what health and well-being mean to adolescents and how they perceive neighborhood factors as influencing them. Interviews with 15 adolescent boys from a low socioeconomic urban neighborhood in the City of Utrecht, the Netherlands, reveal that, according to these boys, doing fun things and spending time with friends and peers underpin their health. The adolescents indicated that such activities support adolescents' subjective well-being by providing opportunities to, inter alia, dev

Practical considerations for diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescence - distilling guidelines into clinical practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The diagnostic criteria for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adults may overdiagnose PCOS in adolescents. Since 2015, three guidelines have developed adolescent-specific diagnostic criteria and treatment recommendations. In this review, we compare and contrast the recommendations to assist in the practical application to clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: The guidelines agree that hyperandrogenism with menstrual irregularity be diagnostic criteria for PCOS in adolescents yet have slight differences in how to diagnose hyperandrogenism and in the definition of menstrual i

Adolescents coping with mood disorder: a grounded theory study.

A grounded theory methodology was used to explore the phenomenon of coping as experienced by adolescents with a mood disorder. Mood disorders among children and adolescents are more persistent than previously thought and have numerous negative associated features, including further episodes of depression, impaired social, academic and vocational relationships, use of alcohol and other drugs, and an increased risk of suicide. Current literature offered little awareness of how adolescents cope with a mood disorder, as well as their perspective of how such an illness impacts their lives. A substa

Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form (DERS-SF): Psychometric Validation and Measurement Invariance Testing in a Sample of Urban Indian Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to emotion dysregulation (ED), a transdiagnostic marker of psychological disorders with implications for academic achievement, identity development, social bonding, mental health, and the overall well-being and development of adolescents. A well-validated tool for the assessment of ED is imperative for credible advances in research on ED among Indian adolescents. Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form (DERS-SF) is a promising tool to assess ED but requires proper psychometric validation among Indian adolescents. The current study

Adolescents' perspectives on food literacy and its impact on their dietary behaviours.

Food literacy has been identified as a promising approach to support healthy dietary behaviours in adolescents. However, adolescents' perspectives on food literacy and the impact it could have on their dietary behaviours are not well understood. This study explored adolescents' perspectives on the potential for food literacy to influence their dietary behaviours. Fifteen focus groups were conducted with adolescents aged 12-17 years and encompassed quantitative and qualitative questions. Adolescents were asked to rank 22 aspects of food literacy in order of importance and discuss their response

Understanding treatment burden in hemophilia: development and validation of the Hemophilia Treatment Experience Measure (Hemo-TEM).

BACKGROUND: To capture the broad range of treatment burden issues experienced by adolescent and adult people with hemophilia (PWH), the Hemophilia Treatment Experience Measure (Hemo-TEM) was developed. We describe the development of this new hemophilia-specific patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure including concept elicitation, cognitive debriefing, and psychometric validation. RESULTS: Concept elicitation interviews were conducted with 5 clinical experts and 30 adult PWH in the United States (US). The qualitative analysis of these interviews and a review of the literature informed the PRO

Cortical thickness, surface area, and multisite pain: distinct patterns by sex in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Multisite pain is common during adolescence and is influenced by sex-related neurobiological and developmental factors, but its developmental neural mechanisms are unclear. METHODS: Utilizing data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study, we investigated the relation between cortical brain structure and multisite pain (assessed by youth self-reports of painful regions on a body map) in male (N = 3,299) and female (N = 2,844) adolescents aged 11-12 years. We focused on brain regions functionally linked to multisite pain (i.e., bilateral sensorimotor, cingulate, fro

Effects of adverse childhood experiences on behavior in adolescence: Insights from brain imaging and genetic risk.

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are important environmental factors influencing behavior. However, the relationship between ACEs, individual behavior, brain mechanisms, and the role of genetic risk remains underexplored. In this study, data from 9796 youths aged 9-13 years in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study were analyzed, including 67 ACE-related variables and 30 behavioral outcomes. Using sparse canonical correlation analysis, we identified two distinct patterns: a parental mental health-child psychopathology, lin

Testing the Social Interaction Learning Model's Applicability to Adolescent Substance Misuse in an Australian Context.

BACKGROUND: Parents and peers both influence the development of adolescent substance misuse, and the Social Interaction Learning (SIL) model provides a theoretical explanation of the paths through which this occurs. OBJECTIVE: The SIL model has primarily been tested with conduct outcomes and in US samples. This study adds to the literature by testing the SIL model with four substance use outcomes in a sample of Australian youth. METHOD: We used structural equation modeling to test the fit of the SIL model to a longitudinal sample (n = 907) of students recruited in grade 5 in Victoria, Austra

Annual Research Review: Interparental conflict and youth psychopathology: an evidence review and practice focused update.

The quality of the interparental relationship is recognized as an important influence on child and adolescent psychopathology. Historically, clinically oriented research on this topic has focused on the impacts of parental divorce and domestic violence as primary interparental relationship influences on child outcomes, to the relative neglect of dimensional or qualitative features of the couple/interparental relationship for youth (child and adolescent) psychopathology. Recent research has highlighted that children are affected by attributes of interparental conflict, specifically how parents

Addressing the critical health problem of adolescent substance use through health care, research, and public policy.

The use of addictive substances-tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs-during adolescence interferes with brain development and increases the risk of serious health and mental health conditions, including addiction. Yet, adolescents live in a culture in which family, social, community, and media influences regularly bombard them with pro-substance use messages, creating an environment in which substance use is considered an expected behavior, rather than a considerable health risk. To prevent the significant harm that falls to teens and young adults because of substance use, The National Center on

Early preventive interventions for adolescents exposed to a potentially traumatic event.

The development and evaluation of early preventative interventions for individuals exposed to a potentially traumatic event (PTE) have been increasing in number and sophistication over the last decade. Evaluation of early interventions for individuals who are symptomatic several weeks after exposure to a PTE have been effective in preventing the development of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there has been little research demonstrating effectiveness of immediate interventions. In addition, there are not specific early interventions targeted toward the adolescent age gro
