Bagolini filter bars: an analysis of light transmittance and their use in a pediatric population.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether the Sbisa bar (Sbisa Ophthalmic Instruments) (referred to in this article as the BF(Sbisa) bar) and Bagolini Filter bar (C.O.I. Vision) (referred to in this article as the BF(new) bar) are repeatable and comparable, for measuring density of suppression or strength of abnormal binocular single vision (BSV), in a pediatric population. Methods: Using a spot photometer, percentage light transmittance of filters on two BF(Sbisa) bars and two BF(new) bars was measured. Thirty-three participants aged 5-12 years with unilateral strabismus were

Overestimation of stereo thresholds by the TNO stereotest is not due to global stereopsis.

PURPOSE: It has been repeatedly shown that the TNO stereotest overestimates stereo threshold compared to other clinical stereotests. In the current study, we test whether this overestimation can be attributed to a distinction between 'global' (or 'cyclopean') and 'Локально' (feature or contour-based) stereopsis. METHODS: We compared stereo thresholds of a global (TNO) and a local clinical stereotest (Randot Circles). In addition, a global and a local psychophysical stereotest were added to the design. One hundred and forty-nine children between 4 and 16 years old were included in the study. RES

The effect of simulated normal and amblyopic higher-order aberrations on visual performance.

PURPOSE: To study the effect of simulated amblyopic and normal higher-order aberrations on visual performance of normal eyes. METHODS: To assess visual function, an adaptive optics visual simulator was used to compensate volunteers' ocular aberrations and simulate the wavefront aberration patterns found in healthy and amblyopic eyes in 7 healthy individuals. Visual acuity for high (100%), medium (50%), and low (10%) contrast and contrast sensitivity at 10, 20, and 25 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured after simulation of both pattern aberrations. The modulation transfer function and the po

Surgical intervention for traumatic cataracts in children: Epidemiology, complications, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: To describe the presentation, treatment, and outcomes of a series of patients with unilateral traumatic cataracts. METHODS: Retrospective, noncomparative review of 25 consecutive children with unilateral traumatic cataracts managed at a single institution during a 5-year period with regard to demographic data, mode of injury, clinical course, and outcome. RESULTS: Paintball and BB gun injuries were the most common mode of injury, accounting for 28% of all cases, followed by injury from pens and pencils (16%). Preoperative visual acuity was poor in 19 patients (76%), and final postop

Change in refractive error after unilateral levator resection for congenital ptosis.

PURPOSE: To analyze refractive change in children with congenital ptosis who have undergone unilateral levator resection. METHODS: All charts of patients with congenital ptosis who underwent one levator resection performed by 2 pediatric ophthalmologists at the University of Minnesota from 1981 through 1995 were reviewed. Postoperative refractive changes were analyzed within the group of eyes that underwent ptosis repair and within the group of fellow eyes that served as age-matched controls. The preoperative and postoperative refractive error of each operated eye was also compared with its p

Stereopsis and disparity vergence in monkeys with subnormal binocular vision.

The surgical treatment for strabismus in infants generally results in microtropia or subnormal binocular vision. Although the clinical chara … as not related to the age at which surgical esotropia was induced, or to the presence or absence of amblyopia, and was not dependent on the spatial frequency of the test stimulus. Altogether, these experiments demonstrate that a temporary, early esotropia can affect the binocular disparity responses of motor and sensory components of binocular vision differ …

Kittens raised with different kinds of abnormal early visual experience (monocular and binocular deprivation, convergent strabismus, eye rot … poral visual fields. These results seem to contradict a recent report of a nasal hemianopia in deep amblyopia (Mehdorn, 1986); taken together, these results suggest that in adult strabismic humans, a nasal field loss is the exception rather than the rule.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Epikeratophakia in children.

Epikeratophakia was performed in 61 children for the correction of aphakia after the removal of unilateral congenital or traumatic cataracts … vision has been seen in all of the children with successful grafts, even those beyond the age when amblyopia therapy would be considered to have some potential for therapeutic effect. By attaching the correction permanently on the eye, epikeratophakia facilitates the vigorous occlusion therapy required after cataract extraction in these children.

Ophthalmological Manifestations of Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome: Current Perspectives.

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is a rare congenital disease that is primarily characterized by ocular anterior segment anomalies but is also … duces optimal outcomes as vision is dependent on many factors including glaucoma, refractive error, amblyopia and strabismus. Further, since ophthalmologists often make the diagnosis, it is important to refer patients with ARS to other specialists including dentistry, cardiology, and neurology.

Novel CRYGC Mutation in Conserved Ultraviolet-Protective Tryptophan (p.Trp131Arg) Is Linked to Autosomal Dominant Congenital Cataract.

Congenital cataract (CC), the most prevalent cause of childhood blindness and amblyopia, necessitates prompt and precise genetic diagnosis. The objective of this study is to identify the underlying genetic cause in a Swiss patient with isolated CC. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and copy number variation (CNV) analysis were conducted for variant identification in a patient born with a total binocular CC without a family history of CC. Sanger Sequencing was used to confirm the variant and segregation analysis was used to screen the non-affected parents. The first de novo missense mutation at c.39…

Neuro-Ophthalmological Manifestations in Children with Down Syndrome: Current Perspectives.

Down syndrome, caused by an extra copy of all or part of chromosome 21, is the most prevalent intellectual disability of genetic origin. Among numerous comorbidities which are part of the phenotype of individuals with Down syndrome, ocular problems appear to be highly prevalent. Neuro-ophthalmological manifestations, such as ocular alignment and motility disturbances, amblyopia, hypoaccommodation or optic nerve abnormalities, and other organic ocular anomalies frequently reported in Down syndrome, may lead to an overall decrease in visual acuity. Although numerous studies have reported ocular …

Optical correction of aphakia in children.

There are several reasons for which the correction of aphakia differs between children and adults. First, a child's eye is still growing during the first few years of life and during early childhood, the refractive elements of the eye undergo radical changes. Second, the immature visual system in young children puts them at risk of developing amblyopia if visual input is defocused or unequal between the two eyes. Third, the incidence of many complications, in which certain risks are acceptable in adults, is unacceptable in children. The optical correction of aphakia in children has changed dra…

Correlation between myopic ametropia and stereoacuity in school-aged children in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between stereoacuity, as analyzed by the Titmus stereotest, and the severity of myopia, astigmatism and anisometropia in a school-aged population in Taiwan. METHODS: Cycloplegic autorefraction, best corrected monocular visual acuity and stereoacuity were measured in 6- to 18-year-old school children. Children with amblyopia (best corrected visual acuity of <20/25) or strabismus were excluded from this study. The correlation between stereoacuity and the severity of myopia, astigmatism and anisometropia was analyzed by the Titmus stereotest. RESULTS: A t…

An appraisal of the disc-macula distance to disc diameter ratio in the assessment of optic disc size.

The disc-macula distance to disc diameter ratio (DM:DD ratio) has been advocated as a method of supporting the diagnosis of optic nerve hypo … d foveal displacement. In an adult population, there was no correlation between the DM:DD ratio and amblyopia or disc ovalness. There was a trend of increasing DM:DD ratio towards myopia and decreasing DM:DD ratio towards hypermetropia; the DM:DD ratio may therefore be falsely high in high myopia. DM:DD ratio values below threshold should therefore be inter …

Epidemiology of ametropia of U.S. Army recruits.

All people attempting to enlist in the U.S. Army must undergo a physical examination that requires a rudimentary vision screening. Those who … ccounted for the next most common diagnosis. Other conditions included anisometropia, antimetropia, amblyopia, keratoconus, and nystagmus. Examinations of these recruits were very limited, with dilated fundus evaluations being performed only when there was a high probability of a disqualifying condition.
