A series of 10 monoclonal antibodies reacting with Afipia felis antigens were selected from mice immunized with live organisms of the reference strain ATCC 53690. Immunoblotting against SDS-PAGE-separated A felis sonicate allowed the antibodies to be classified into three groups: 1) 168-4, -6, -7 and -10 reacted with a 53 kDa antigen, 2) 168-1, -3 and -9 reacted with both 53 kDa and 60 kDa antigens, and 3) 168-2, -5 and -9 reacted with other antigens. Antibodies of group 1 did not cross-react with other Afipia species or 36 unrelated bacteria, whereas those of groups 2 and 3 reacted with other

The seroprevalence of Bartonella henselae and Toxoplasma gondii among apparently healthy individuals, mainly blood donors, in Thailand was investigated by an indirect fluorescent antibody technique and by a latex agglutination test, respectively. Of 163 serum samples examined, 9 (5.5%) were found to be positive for B. henselae-IgG, 2 (1.2%) for B. henselae-IgM, and 5 (3.1%) for the T. gondii antibody. No significant difference was observed between male and female samples in the serological test with either B. henselae or T. gondii. The age of individuals with B. henselae-IgG was distributed fr

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a viral disease caused by Lyssavirus type 1, primarily affecting warm-blooded animals, especially carnivores like dogs and cats. It is classified as a neglected tropical disease and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Rabies spreads through saliva, typically via bites or scratches from infected animals, and 95% of global rabies deaths occur in Africa and Asia. In India, around 6-7 million animal bites are reported annually, with dogs responsible for 95% of rabies cases.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical - social profile

Rabies is a fatal infectious disease that can be prevented with vaccination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of rabies knowledge among medical faculty students. This cross-sectional study included students in the medical faculty of a university hospital. The level of rabies knowledge was evaluated with a questionnaire evaluating 70 parameters. A total of 892 students participated in this study. Medical students knew that dogs and cats transmit rabies at high rates (96.9% and 87.4%, respectively) but understood less about other animals. Pregnancy (45.2%), being >65 years of age,

Streptococcus canis (S. canis) is an underrecognized zoonotic pathogen capable of causing invasive human infection. We report a case of sepsis with acute hypoxic respiratory failure due to S. canis bacteremia in a 73-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities, including breast cancer complicated by chronic lymphedema and cardiovascular disease. She presented with fever, progressive dyspnea, hypoxemia, leukocytosis, acute kidney injury, and rising cardiac troponin levels. Imaging demonstrated bilateral interstitial opacities consistent with pulmonary edema, and her clinical course required inte

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore forming, and aerobic/anaerobic cocobacillus known as the causative agent of human and animal diseases. Humans can often be affected by cat scratch or bite, which may lead to soft tissue infections and in rare cases to bacteremia and septicemia. Commercial vaccines against this agent include inactivated, live attenuated, and non-pathogenic bacteria. Current vaccines have certain disadvantages such as reactogenicity or reversion to virulence. Therefore, the aim of this study was to reach a multi-epitope vaccine candidate

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis affecting humans and other animals. The disease can be acquired by accidental inoculation of the fungus through the skin or through the respiratory system. Sporotrichosis can also be transmitted through bites or scratches by infected cats and more rarely by other animals (zoonotic transmission). Conventional antifungal therapy is especially inefficient in immunocompromised patients, who tend to develop the most severe forms of the disease, thus prompting the search for alternative therapies. Given their antigen-presenting properties, dendritic cells (DC

Protein antigens of Bartonella henselae bacterial sonicate supernatant and concentrated cell-free culture filtrate were examined by SDS-PAGE. The sonicate supernatant gave 38 bands and the culture filtrate at least 21, of which 18 were of bacterial origin. Immunoblotting against 13 monoclonal antibodies obtained from mice infected with live B. henselae showed that 10 of these antibodies reacted with a narrow 225 kDa band and varying smears of bands ranging from 36 to 240 kDa in the sonicate, but only with a single 200 kDa band in the culture filtrate. Testing of pre- and post-infection rabbit

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis was described as early as the fifth century BC. It showed an increased incidence worldwide in the past several years.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old Arabian boy was referred for admission as a case of cellulitis of the left thigh. Ten days prior to admission he had a cat scratch to his left thigh and the parents did not seek medical advice at that time. The child was again examined by orthopedic surgeon and a diagnosis of cellulites was made at that time.Physical examination on admission revealed a very toxic appearing weak child with cold extremities and

Nine strains of Rochalimaea spp. that were isolated from patients over a period of 4.5 years were characterized for their enzyme activities, cellular fatty acid compositions, and DNA interrelatedness among Rochalimaea spp., Bartonella bacilliformis, and Afipia felis (cat scratch disease bacillus). All except one isolate, which was Rochalimaea quintana, were determined to belong to a newly proposed species, Rochalimaea henselae sp. nov. After recovery from clinical material, colonies required 5 to 15 days of incubation to become apparent. Cells were small, gram-negative, curved bacilli and disp

Some bacterial pathogens can manipulate the angiogenic response, suppressing or inducing it for their own ends. In humans, Bartonella henselae is associated with cat-scratch disease and vasculoproliferative disorders such as bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis. Although endothelial cells (ECs) support the pathogenesis of B. henselae, the mechanisms by which B. henselae induces EC activation are not completely clear, as well as the possible contributions of other cells recruited at the site of infection. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are endowed with angiogenic potential and play a…

Bartonella henselae is a fastidious intraerythrocytic, gram-negative bacteria that causes cat scratch disease in humans. Ixodes ricinus has been confirmed to be a competent vector of B. henselae, and some indirect evidences from clinical cases and epidemiological studies also suggested that some other tick species, including Rhipicephalus sanguineus, may transmit the bacteria. B. henselae has been detected in R. sanguineus but no experimental investigations have been performed to evaluate the vector competency of this tick species regarding B. henselae transmission. To this end, this work aime

Bartonella henselae is a fastidious Gram-negative intracellular bacterium that can cause cat scratch disease, endocarditis in humans and animals, as well as other complications, leading to acute or chronic infections. The current treatment for Bartonella infections is not very effective due to antibiotic resistance and also persistence. To develop better therapies for persistent and chronic Bartonella infections, in this study, with the help of SYBR Green I/PI viability assay, we performed a high-throughput screening of an essential oil library against the stationary phase B. henselae. We succ

Neuroretinitis (NR) is an inflammatory disorder characterized by optic disc edema and subsequent formation of a macular star figure. The underlying pathophysiology involves increased permeability of disc vasculature, but the etiology is not fully defined. In some cases, NR is probably due to an infectious process involving the disc; in others, a postviral or autoimmune mechanism is more likely. Cases can be divided into those in which a specific infectious agent has been identified, those considered idiopathic, and those with recurrent attacks. Some reports have not distinguished among these s

Species of the genus Rochalimaea, recently renamed Bartonella, are of a growing medical interest. Bartonella quintana was reported as the cause of trench fever, endocarditis, and bacillary angiomatosis. B. henselae has been implicated in symptoms and infections of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, such as fever, endocarditis, and bacillary angiomatosis, and is involved in the etiology of cat scratch disease. Such a wide spectrum of infections makes it necessary to obtain an intraspecies identification tool in order to perform epidemiological studies. B. vinsonii, B. elizabethae,
