Seasonal reversal of river-groundwater exchange controls dissolved organic matter dynamics across the arid margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key regulator of carbon cycling and water quality within surface water-groundwater interaction (SGI) zones. However, how the seasonal reorganization of SGI governs DOM dynamics in high-altitude arid basins remains poorly understood. Focusing on the Golmud River Basin along the arid Tibetan Plateau margin, this study systematically examines the spatiotemporal evolution of river-groundwater exchange and its influence on DOM sources, composition, and transport along a continuous transect from mountainous headwaters through alluvial fans to salinized plains. Development and validation of a national questionnaire assessing knowledge, attitudes, and practices on neglected tropical diseases among italian medical trainees.

BACKGROUND: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) affect nearly two billion people worldwide, yet preparedness to diagnose and manage them remains limited in high-income countries (HICs), where shifting epidemiology driven by climate changes, migration, mobility, international food and animal trade and global interconnection requires broader clinical competencies. Evidence on NTD-related knowledge among medical trainees in Europe is scarce. This study aimed to develop, validate, and field-test a comprehensive instrument assessing knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding NTDs among Ital

Measuring real-time disease transmissibility with temperature-dependent generation intervals.

Accurate real-time estimation of the effective reproduction number (Rt) is critical for infectious disease surveillance and response. In vector-borne diseases like dengue, temperature strongly influences disease transmission by affecting generation times. However, most existing Rt estimation methods assume a fixed generation interval, leading to biased estimates and unreliable assessments of transmission risk in settings with fluctuating temperatures. In this study, we proposed and evaluated a novel framework to estimate a temperature-dependent reproduction number (td-Rt) that dynamically upda

Effects of Increasing CO2 Concentration on Crop Growth and Soil Ammonia-Oxidizing Microorganisms in a Fababean (Vicia faba L.) and Wheat (Triticum aestivum Yunmai) Intercropping System.

Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) levels can enhance crop yields but may simultaneously reduce quality, impacting both macronutrient and micronutrient concentrations, and potentially decreasing protein content in cereal grains. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and nitrogen (N) fertilization on crop growth, yield, and soil nitrogen cycling through a glass greenhouse experiment using Eutric Regosol soil. The experimental design incorporated two CO2 gradients: ambient CO2 (aCO2) at approximately 410 ppm during the day and 460 ppm at night, and eCO2 at approximately 550 ppm duri

Unveiling the methane hydrate-water interfacial free energy through direct molecular simulation at coexistence conditions.

HYPOTHESIS: The interfacial free energy between hydrate and water phases is a key thermodynamic parameter that governs both nucleation kinetics and crystal growth of gas hydrates. In these strategic materials-crystalline inclusion compounds where hydrogen-bonded water cages encapsulate small guest molecules such as methane () and carbon dioxide ()-this interfacial energy plays a crucial role in determining phase stability and formation pathways. Given the significance of gas hydrates in energy storage, sequestration, and climate-related processes, accurately determining their interfacial energ

New porous amine-functionalized biochar-based desiccated coconut waste as efficient CO2 adsorbents.

Climate change caused by the greenhouse gases CO2 remains a topic of global concern. To mitigate the excessive levels of anthrophonic CO2 in the atmosphere, CO2 capture methods have been developed and among these, adsorption is an especially promising method. This paper presents a series of amine functionalized biochar obtained from desiccated coconut waste (amine-biochar@DCW) for use as CO2 adsorbent. They are ethylenediamine-functionalized biochar@DCW (EDA-biochar@DCW), diethylenetriamine-functionalized biochar@DCW (DETA-biochar@DCW), triethylenetetramine-functionalized biochar@DCW (TETA-bio

An automated neural network-based stage-specific malaria detection software using dimension reduction: The malaria microscopy classifier.

Due to climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of malaria cases and deaths, caused by the Plasmodium genus, of which P. falciparum is the most common and lethal to humans, increased between 2019 and 2020. Reversing this trend and eliminating malaria worldwide requires improvements in malaria diagnosis, in which artificial intelligence (AI) has recently been demonstrated to have a great potential. One of the main reasons for the use of neural networks (NNs) is the time saving through automatising the process and the elimination of human error. When classifying with two-dimensional

Enhancing Yield and Physiological Performance by Foliar Applications of Chemically Inert Mineral Particles in a Rainfed Vineyard under Mediterranean Conditions.

One of the biggest environmental challenges that most of the traditional and modern grape-growing areas are facing is the frequency, severity, and unpredictability of extreme weather events as a result of climate change. Sustainable tools such as chemically inert mineral particles could be a valid alternative for the promotion of environmentally-friendly viticultural techniques to enhance yield, improve physiological processes, and increase tolerance to biotic/abiotic stressors and grape quality. In regard to this concept, the effects of kaolin (KL) and zeolite (ZL) application was tested in t

Prioritization of zoonoses for multisectoral, One Health collaboration in Somalia, 2023.

BACKGROUND: The human population of Somalia is vulnerable to zoonoses due to a high reliance on animal husbandry. This disease risk is exacerbated by relatively low income (poverty) and weak state capacity for health service delivery in the country as well as climate extremes and geopolitical instability in the region. To address this threat to public health efficiently and effectively, it is essential that all sectors have a common understanding of the priority zoonotic diseases of greatest concern to the country. METHODS: Representatives from human, animal (domestic and wildlife), agricultu

Evaporation of freely suspended single droplets: experimental, theoretical and computational simulations.

Evaporation is ubiquitous in nature. This process influences the climate, the formation of clouds, transpiration in plants, the survival of arctic organisms, the efficiency of car engines, the structure of dried materials and many other phenomena. Recent experiments discovered two novel mechanisms accompanying evaporation: temperature discontinuity at the liquid-vapour interface during evaporation and equilibration of pressures in the whole system during evaporation. None of these effects has been predicted previously by existing theories despite the fact that after 130 years of investigation

Critical thinking of nurse managers related to staff RNs' perceptions of the practice environment.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Critical thinking (CT) skills and the inclination to engage in critical thinking are essential for nurse managers to function as transformational leaders capable of influencing staff to align with organizational goals. In an extensive literature review, numerous studies were found examining the concept of CT in students and no studies were found exploring CT in nurse managers. Identifying the attributes, such as CT, that lead to success in the nurse manager role is useful when preparing nurse managers to lead effectively in the current healt

Agronomic and nutritional performance of lentil-hull-less barley mixtures under temperate Swiss conditions: protein content, protein yield stability, β-glucan content and separation ability.

BACKGROUND: Intercropping of legumes with cereals enhances resilience, resource efficiency, and nutritional quality in food systems, yet few studies have integrated yield stability with grain quantity and post-harvest processability. Lentils (Lens culinaris Medik.) and hull-less barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum) represent a promising mixture for temperate climates. Here, we provide the first multi-year evaluation of protein content, protein yield stability, β-glucan concentration, and grain separation, across 3 years (2022-2024), two sites, and 22 treatments. RESULTS: Mixed stands increa

Mechanisms underlying the effects of alpine wetland vegetation succession on the community assembly and functional potential of nirK-type denitrifier.

Denitrification in alpine wetlands critically regulates regional nitrogen budgets and N2O emissions, and nirK-harboring denitrifiers represent an important functional group involved in nitrite reduction during denitrification. Spatial heterogeneity across distinct plant communities can modulate soil microenvironments, thereby shaping N2O production, consumption, and emission dynamics. Here, using a space-for-time substitution approach, we investigated four successional stages-early (BS), transitional (CR), middle (EN), and mature (LS)-in the alpine wetlands of Qinghai Lake. High-throughput seq

Feedstock-Dependent Water Sorption and Retention of Citric-Acid-Modified Lignocellulosic Biogels Under Simulated Climatic Conditions.

Increasing drought frequency and irregular precipitation patterns highlight the need for sustainable soil water management. In this study, lignocellulosic biogels were prepared from Norway spruce and silver birch sawdust and from rapeseed and poppy straw using a 10 wt.% citric acid solution, with a fixed addition of 5 mL of 80% lactic acid as a processing modifier. Two formulations differing in the volume of citric acid solution (180 or 250 mL per 12 g of dry feedstock), and consequently in both the liquid-to-solid ratio and absolute citric acid dose, were evaluated. Biomass chemical compositi

Beyond the floodwaters: women's multidimensional vulnerability to flood disasters - a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Flood disasters, intensified by climate change, are increasing in frequency and severity globally, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, particularly women. Women's vulnerability during flood disasters extends beyond biological or physical differences and is shaped by broader social, economic, cultural, and institutional conditions. However, synthesised evidence on women's vulnerabilities in flood contexts remains limited. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta

Regional variability in skin water and heat loss during hemodialysis indicates site-specific skin barrier regulation.

Although the kidney is established as a key organ for water and electrolyte homeostasis, emerging evidence highlights the skin as a crucial regulator of whole-body water balance. We hence hypothesized that acute fluid removal during hemodialysis (HD) impacts skin barrier function, assessed by measurements of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and heat loss. In our prospective, monocentric SkInDialysis study, 11 patients undergoing maintenance HD (27% females; mean age, 55.4 ± 13.3 yr) underwent measurements of TEWL, skin hydration, temperature, and heat loss at three sites (forearm, face, and tr

Impact of Long-Term Drainage on Carbon Fluxes in the High-Latitude Permafrost Region.

With Arctic amplification, hydrological conditions in Arctic permafrost regions are expected to change substantially, which can have a strong impact on carbon budgets. To date, detailed mechanisms remain highly uncertain due to the lack of continuous observational data. Considering the large carbon storage in these regions, understanding these processes becomes crucial for estimating the future trajectory of global climate change. This study presents findings from 8 years of continuous eddy-covariance measurements of carbon dioxide ( CO 2 $$ {\mathrm{CO}}_2 $$ ) and methane ( CH 4 $$ {\

Environmental sustainability of clinical laboratories: A scoping review.

IntroductionThe climate crisis presents a complex and growing challenge for healthcare systems around the world. Healthcare systems can contribute to substantial global emissions, with the UK's National Health Service (NHS) alone responsible for 4%-5% of the country's total carbon footprint. A wide range of clinical disciplines have already begun to assess and design interventions to tackle this issue. However, clinical and diagnostic laboratories remain underexplored.AimsWhat studies have been undertaken to assess and improve the environmental impact of clinical laboratories?MethodsThis scopi
