Exercise-induced neuroprotection of hippocampus in APP/PS1 transgenic mice via upregulation of mitochondrial 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase.

Improving mitochondrial function has been proposed as a reasonable therapeutic strategy to reduce amyloid-β (Aβ) load and to modify the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the relationship between mitochondrial adaptation and brain neuroprotection caused by physical exercise in AD is poorly understood. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of long-term treadmill exercise on mitochondrial 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase-1 (OGG1) level, mtDNA oxidative damage, and mitochondrial function in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 transgenic mouse model of AD. In the present study, tw

Motor imagery training in hemiplegic cerebral palsy: a potentially useful therapeutic tool for rehabilitation.

Converging evidence indicates that motor deficits in cerebral palsy (CP) are related not only to problems with execution, but also to impaired motor planning. Current rehabilitation mainly focuses on alleviating compromised motor execution. Motor imagery is a promising method of training the more 'cognitive' aspects of motor behaviour, and may, therefore, be effective in facilitating motor planning in patients with CP. In this review first we present the specific motor planning problems in CP followed by a discussion of motor imagery and its use in clinical practice. Second, we present the ste

Long-Acting Injectable Risperidone for Relapse Prevention and Control of Breakthrough Symptoms After a Recent First Episode of Schizophrenia. A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Long-acting, injectable, second-generation antipsychotic medication has tremendous potential to bring clinical stability to persons with schizophrenia. However, long-acting medications are rarely used following a first episode of schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy of the long-acting injectable formulation of risperidone with the oral formulation in the early course of schizophrenia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized clinical trial performed at a university-based research clinic, between 2005 and 2012. Eighty-six patients with recent onset of

Modafinil improves methamphetamine-induced object recognition deficits and restores prefrontal cortex ERK signaling in mice.

Chronic use of methamphetamine (METH) leads to long-lasting cognitive dysfunction in humans and in animal models. Modafinil is a wake-promoting compound approved for the treatment of sleeping disorders. It is also prescribed off label to treat METH dependence. In the present study, we investigated whether modafinil could improve cognitive deficits induced by sub-chronic METH treatment in mice by measuring visual retention in a Novel Object Recognition (NOR) task. After sub-chronic METH treatment (1 mg/kg, once a day for 7 days), mice performed the NOR task, which consisted of habituation to th

Sex-dependent hemodynamic responses in the whole brain during single-session fNIRS neurofeedback.

BACKGROUND: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based neurofeedback (fNIRS-NF) training shows potential for improving cognitive function. However, current paradigms often overlook individual differences-particularly gender-specific effects on neuroplastic responses. This study investigates gender's role by analyzing brain functional characteristics during neurofeedback training across genders. METHODS: A total of 38 subjects (20 males and 18 females) were included in this study. All subjects completed neuropsychological tests, followed by a single NIRS-NF training session targeting the bila

Frontoparietal neurostimulation modulates working memory training benefits and oscillatory synchronization.

There is considerable interest in maintaining working memory (WM) because it is essential to accomplish most cognitive tasks, and it is correlated with fluid intelligence and ecologically valid measures of daily living. Toward this end, WM training protocols aim to improve WM capacity and extend improvements to unpracticed domains, yet success is limited. One emerging approach is to couple WM training with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). This pairing of WM training with tDCS in longitudinal designs promotes behavioral improvement and evidence of transfer of performance gains to

Effects of interpretation training on hostile attribution bias and reactivity to interpersonal insult.

Research suggests that individuals high in anger have a bias for attributing hostile intentions to ambiguous situations. The current study tested whether this interpretation bias can be altered to influence anger reactivity to an interpersonal insult using a single-session cognitive bias modification program. One hundred thirty-five undergraduate students were randomized to receive positive training, negative training, or a control condition. Anger reactivity to insult was then assessed. Positive training led to significantly greater increases in positive interpretation bias relative to the ne

Novel Method for Rapid Assessment of Cognitive Impairment Using High-Performance Eye-Tracking Technology.

A rapid increase in the number of patients with dementia has emerged as a global health challenge. Accumulating evidence suggests that early diagnosis and timely intervention can delay cognitive decline. The diagnosis of dementia is commonly performed using neuropsychological tests, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), administered by trained examiners. While these traditional neuropsychological tests are valid and reliable, they are neither simple nor sufficiently short as routine screening tools for dementia. Here, we developed a brief cognitive assessment utilizing an eye-track

Difference between eyes-open and eyes-closed resting state quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) for predicting cognitive impairment using deep learning.

OBJECTIVE: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a method that offers detailed observations of electrical activities occurring in the brain's cerebral cortex. The EEG-derived brain signals can serve as a neurophysiological indicator for the early detection of dementia through quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis. This study introduces a deep learning (DL)-based classification approach trained using the difference between qEEG time-frequency (TF) images of eyes-open resting (EOR) and eyes-closed resting (ECR) state EEG to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). PATIENTS AND

Dynamic Changes in Local Activity and Network Interactions among the Anterior Cingulate, Amygdala, and Cerebellum during Associative Learning.

Communication between the cerebellum and forebrain structures is necessary for motor learning and has been implicated in a variety of cognitive functions. The exact nature of cerebellar-forebrain interactions supporting behavior and cognition is not known. We examined how local and network activity support learning by simultaneously recording neural activity in the cerebellum, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex while male and female rats were trained in trace eyeblink conditioning. Initially, the cerebellum and forebrain signal the contingency between external stimuli through increases in

Context matters: The role of subjective arousal during Attentional Bias Modification targeting socially anxious students.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Attentional Bias Modification (ABM) paradigms targeting anxiety aim to reduce attentional biases for threatening stimuli and thereby reduce anxiety. Based on cognitive theories of performance and learning, elevated levels of arousal during ABM might enhance its effectiveness by making training more engaging and activating fear schemas. This study investigated whether elevated levels of arousal during ABM would increase its effectiveness in reducing attentional bias, stress reactivity, and post-event processing. METHOD: We randomly assigned 79 high socially anxious s

Modifying a negative interpretation bias for ambiguous social scenarios that depict the risk of rejection in women with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: A heightened sensitivity to social rejection might contribute towards the interpersonal difficulties and symptoms that characterise Anorexia Nervosa (AN). This paper examines the effect of Cognitive Bias Modification for Interpretation biases (CBM-I) training on a negative interpretation bias for ambiguous social scenarios that involve the risk of rejection and eating behaviour. METHOD: Women with AN received a single session of CBM-I training to develop a more benign interpretational style or a control condition (which included 50:50 negative and benign resolutions). [A pilot study: neuropsychological rehabilitation of patients with solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy].

Fourteen patients with chronic toxic encephalopathy underwent a neuropsychological intervention comprising crisis therapy, information about the disease, and cognitive training. Evaluation showed the patients to have experienced substantial improvement in their daily life and family relations as a result of the intervention. Their affective symptoms decreased and their verbal memory improved. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measurements showed training-dependent changes of functional activity related to change in memory strategy. This rCBF change had disappeared six months later, however, …

Transfer of training effects in stroke patients with apraxia: an exploratory study.

The goal of the present study was to examine the transfer of the effects of cognitive strategy training for stroke patients with apraxia from trained to non-trained tasks. In strategy training, the occurrence of transfer is expected as the training programme is aimed, not at relearning specific tasks, but at teaching patients new ways to handle the problems resulting from the impairment. Exploratory analyses were conducted on data previously collected in a randomised controlled trial on the efficacy of the strategy training. A total of 113 left hemisphere stroke patients were randomly assigned

Educational Frameworks for Diagnostic Decision-Making in AI-Enhanced Head and Neck Pathology.

CONTEXT: This paper examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping diagnostic decision-making in academic and clinical head and neck pathology (HNP) and argues for the redefinition of post-doctoral education in the age of AI. PERSPECTIVE: While AI promises enhanced diagnostic accuracy, reproducibility, and efficiency, its integration also amplifies human cognitive biases and introduces new forms of error. Here we build on the 2019 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) pathology milestones to provide an educational framework that prepares clinicians to engage cri
