Analgesic efficacy and tolerability of oxycodone 5 mg/ibuprofen 400 mg compared with those of oxycodone 5 mg/acetaminophen 325 mg and hydrocodone 7.5 mg/acetaminophen 500 mg in patients with moderate to severe postoperative pain: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-dose, parallel-group study in a dental pain model.

BACKGROUND: Combination therapy has been widely used for the clinical management of acute pain. By combining 2 drugs with different mechanisms of action, such therapy provides additive analgesic effects while reducing the risk for adverse effects. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy and tolerability of oxycodone 5 mg/ibuprofen 400 mg with those of oxycodone 5 mg/acetaminophen 325 mg, hydrocodone 7.5 mg/acetaminophen 500 mg, and placebo in a dental pain model. METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo- and active-controlled, parallel-group, single-dose study i

ABO haemolytic disease of the newborn: Improved prediction by novel integration of causative and protective factors in newborn and mother.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prediction of haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN) caused by maternal anti-A/-B enables timely therapy, thereby preventing the development of kernicterus spectrum disorder. However, previous efforts to establish accurate prediction methods have been only modestly successful. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a case-control study, we examined 76 samples from mothers and 76 samples from their newborns; 38 with and 38 without haemolysis. The IgG subclass profile of maternal anti-A and anti-B was determined by flow cytometry. Samples from newborns were geneticall

Representation of racial and ethnic minorities in U.S. depression trials comparing psychotherapy vs. controls: A meta-analysis using state population benchmarks.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotherapies for depression are effective. To generalize to the diverse U.S. population, clinical trials must adequately represent racial/ethnic minority groups. Prior reviews of diversity of clinical trial participants are limited by incomplete reporting of race/ethnicity, use of national rather than state-level comparators, and pooling practices where a few diverse trials skew estimates. METHODS: We evaluated racial/ethnic representation in U.S. randomized trials comparing psychotherapy with an inactive control in depressed adults using meta-analysis with state-specific pop

Optimization of a group-based intervention for people living with severe obesity (PROGROUP): Understanding fidelity to delivery and the patient experience.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the fidelity of delivery of complex health behaviour interventions is crucial in determining their effectiveness and identifying aspects needing refinement. PROGROUP is a group-based intervention for people with severe obesity. It aims to promote a shared social identity to support behaviour change. Data from a feasibility randomized controlled trial (fRCT) were used to assess fidelity of intervention delivery and the impact on patient experiences, to optimize the intervention for a main trial. METHODS: Data from 18 patient and five facilitator interviews, audio and

How are normal sleeping controls selected? A systematic review of cross-sectional insomnia studies and a standardized method to select healthy controls for sleep research.

There appears to be some inconsistency in how normal sleepers (controls) are selected and screened for participation in research studies for comparison with insomnia patients. The purpose of the current study is to assess and compare methods of identifying normal sleepers in insomnia studies, with reference to published standards. We systematically reviewed the literature on insomnia patients, which included control subjects. The resulting 37 articles were systematically reviewed with reference to the five criteria for normal sleep specified by Edinger et al. In summary, these criteria are as

Analysis of Control Arm Quality in Randomized Clinical Trials Leading to Anticancer Drug Approval by the US Food and Drug Administration.

IMPORTANCE: To date, an empirical evaluation of the quality of control arms in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) leading to anticancer drug approvals by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not been undertaken. OBJECTIVE: We sought to estimate the percentage of RCTs that used a control arm deemed suboptimal and led to FDA approval of anticancer drugs from January 1, 2013, to July 31, 2018. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This quality improvement study included 143 anticancer drug approvals granted by the FDA from January 1, 2013, to July 31, 2018. All approvals based on single-ar

ABO, Rh, MNSs, sex and typhoid fever.

A case-control study on the association between genetic markers (ABO, Rh, MNSs and sex) and typhoid fever (TF) was performed. We found that (a) the B allele conferred protection to females for TF and a mild susceptibility to males; (b) the CDe haplotype (or the RH3 phenotype, mostly CDe/CDe) was associated with protection against Salmonella in both sexes, while cDE (or RH7, mostly cDE/cDE, and RH8, mostly cDE/cde) was associated with susceptibility to TF, and (c) heterozygotes Ss (MNSs system) had a high susceptibility, while SS and particularly ss homozygotes seemed to be protected for the di

Prospects for the provision of genotyped blood for transfusion.

Blood group genotyping is gaining widespread adoption in blood centres and transfusion services. The current interest for a blood centre is its use as a screening tool to accurately predict donor phenotypes. However, not only is blood group genotyping used to screen for uncommon and rare types on a mass-scale, it can be used to optimize the inventory of multiple antigen-negative screened units. In addition, blood group genotyping provides blood types when antisera are not available, it can predict weak and variant antigens, and can aid in the resolution of ABO discrepancies. There are quality

Case-control study learning module: Oluweafemi et al. (2026), The association between paternal race and ethnicity and a spectrum of birth defects in a national case-control study.

Educational Engagement Modules (EEMs) are teaching materials for educators and students that facilitate a deeper understanding of key epidemiological methods and concepts. Each EEM poses a series of questions using a recently published paper in Annals to further understanding of a specific study design or epidemiological concept and to encourage critical thinking and careful evaluation. This EEM focuses on case-control studies featuring the following article: Oluwafemi OO, Mitchell LE, Patel JR, Nembhard WN, Shaw GM, Olshan AF, Chen H, Agopian AJ. The association between paternal race and ethn

Not all movements are equal: Differences in the variability of trunk motor behavior between people with and without low back pain-A systematic review with descriptive synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Differences in variability of trunk motor behavior between people with and without low back pain (LBP) have been reported in the literature. However, the direction and consistency of these differences remain unclear. Understanding variability of trunk motor behavior between individuals with LBP and those without is crucial to better understand the impact of LBP and potentially optimize treatment outcomes. Identifying such differences may help tailor therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to answer the question: Is variability of trunk motor behavior diff

Stress errors in a case of developmental surface dyslexia in Filipino.

This paper reports the case of a dyslexic boy (L.A.) whose impaired reading of Filipino is consistent with developmental surface dyslexia. Filipino has a transparent alphabetic orthography with stress typically falling on the penultimate syllable of multisyllabic words. However, exceptions to the typical stress pattern are not marked in the Filipino orthography. L.A. read words with typical stress patterns as accurately as controls, but made many more stress errors than controls when reading Filipino words with atypical stress. He regularized the pronunciation of many of these words by incorre

Demographic Characteristics of Participants in Rheumatoid Arthritis Randomized Clinical Trials: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Racial/ethnic minority groups, women, and elderly people experience a disproportionate burden of disease in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), making it particularly important to examine drug therapies in these populations. Despite a national health agenda to improve representation of diverse populations in randomized clinical trials (RCTs), there have been few large-scale analyses examining RCT demographic characteristics within rheumatology and none focusing on RA. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the representation of racial/ethnic minority groups, women, and elderly people through a compreh

Assessment of the Reporting Quality of Randomized Controlled Trials on Peer Tutoring in Medical Education.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Peer tutoring (PT) has been increasingly adopted as an innovative pedagogical approach in medical education. However, the methodological rigor and reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating PT remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the reporting quality of PT-related RCTs using the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) 2010 guidelines. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted to identify RCTs that investigated PT interventions among medical students, focusing on publications after 2010.
