The patient we present herein is a 6-month-old infant who had erythema and scaling on the central part of the face for 4 months. Both the abundant scaling and the localisation, but also the low age of this infant led to suspect seborrhoeic dermatitis. Direct microscopic examination of scales showed septate hyphae and the cultural examination was also positive for dermatophyte. The found species was Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This article is devoted to hormonal pathogenesis of chosen dermatoses--acne vulgaris and androgenetic alopecia--basis of the latest literature. Authors take note of possible role of many different hormonal factors, not only androgens, in etiology these diseases. BACKGROUND: Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are common skin lesions that have been shown to occur with increasing age, although the age of onset is not well recorded.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, nature, and distribution of SKs in young people.
METHODS: One hundred seventy people aged 15 to 30 years were given a total body examination during which the presence, number, site, and size of SKs were recorded. Biopsy specimens were taken from the first 22 people who had lesions clinically diagnosed as SKs. Data on age, skin type, eye color, and hair color were recorded for all respondents.

Twenty patients with scalp seborrhoeic dermatitis were treated twice weekly with ketoconazole 2% shampoo for 4 weeks. Clinical assessment, culture for P. ovale on Dixon broth and lipid measurement at two places were made before treatment and after 2 and 4 weeks. In order to elucidate the effectiveness of anti-mycotics in treating seborrhoeic dermatitis, an attempt was made to isolate Malassezia from seborrhoeic lesions of patients of seborrhoeic dermatitis. The results revealed that, in male patients, 46/49 cases were positive for Malassezia furfur on the face and 30/48 cases were positive for M. furfur on the scalp. We utilized a sebum-sensitive adhesive film, Sebutape, to visualize the pore patterns of women with and without acne with computerized image analysis. In normal young women, we found a positive correlation between the number of active sebaceous follicles and total sebum excretion. When seborrhea was intense, this correlation was however lost. The situation was more complex in acne. The severity of seborrhea was positively correlated with the mean sebum excretion of individual follicles but not with the number of active follicles.

Epiluminescent microscopy (ELM) has been widely accepted as a non-invasive, rapid technique for the differentiation of pigmented skin lesions. The method is valuable for distinguishing melanocytic and non-melanocytic tumors, as well as for identifying malignant melanoma. Due to great morphological variability of pigmented lesions considerable experience is required. Based on a morphological analysis of 600 pigmented skin lesions, a diagnostic procedure was developed that permits a reproducible description and diagnosis of a given lesion and facilitates training in ELM.

Widening of the QRS complex by terminal notching in leads V1 and V2 was observed in 6 seborrheic patients with adequate personal hygiene. This anomaly disappeared when the presternal skin was degreased thoroughly with cationic detergent before placing the conductive paste and electrodes. We attribute these electrocardiographic alterations to variations in the apocrine secretions in the presternal region, which modified the resistance of the skin to electrical potentials.

1% Bifonazole cream and gel were used for the local therapy of sebopsoriasis and psoriasis in a pilot study with 20 patients. 3 of the 9 patients with psoriasis and 9 of the 11 patients with sebopsoriasis had improved markedly. The mechanisms of the effectiveness of this therapy will be discussed together with the results of some provocation tests with bacterial antigens.
