In this report, we describe a case of bilateral non-syndromic hereditary lymphedema praecox of lower legs. The patient was diagnosed at age 16. Ten years later, he was unable to ambulate due to increased bilateral lower leg volume, continuous pain, and recurrent episodes of cellulitis. He was treated at our tertiary-care center with compression therapy and circumferential liposuction of lower legs, ankles, and dorsum of feet in order to remove hypertrophic fat deposits, facilitate conservative therapy, and decrease further risk of cellulitis. We have investigated the roles of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) in host defense against Brugia malayi. Our data suggest that the lack of either IFN-gamma or IL-4 prolongs the time required to achieve sterile immunity, suggesting that both canonical type 1 and type 2 responses are involved in the clearance of infection.

Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria have been shown to be widespread among filarial worms and could thus play some role in the biology of these nematodes. Filariasis survey in a randomly selected tea estate of district Dibrugrah revealed 6.7% infection of Wuchereria bancrofti in labour population with microfilaria (mf) rate of 7.6% in males and 5.9% in females.
