BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Concomitant carriage of blaNDM-1 and plasmid mediated quinolone resistance determinants (PMQRs) by multi drug resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) has increased globally, often related to their presence on transmissible plasmids. In this study, we hypothesized the presence of blaNDM-1 and PMQRs on a single conjugative plasmid that circulates among K. pneumoniae strains isolated from Assiut University Hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two clinical MDR K. pneumoniae strains harboring both blaNDM-1 and PMQRs were genotyped using pulsed field gel

Tigecycline is a last-resort drug used to treat serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. tet(X4) is a recently discovered plasmid-mediated tigecycline resistance gene that confers high-level resistance to tigecycline and other tetracyclines. Since the first discovery of tet(X4) in 2019, it has spread rapidly worldwide, and as a consequence, tigecycline has become increasingly ineffective in the clinical treatment of multidrug-resistant infections. In this study, we identified and analyzed tet(X4)-positive Escherichia coli isolates from duck farms in Hunan Province, China. In

INTRODUCTION: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli are an increasingly significant cause of community-acquired infection worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in a community, to analyze the relationship between strains studied, and to characterize the ESBL genes involved in this resistance.
METHODOLOGY: ESBL production was detected by the double disk synergy test. Genes encoding ESBLs (blaTEM, blaCTM, blaSHV) were identified by PCR and DNA sequencing. Conjugation experiments were performed to check the transferab

Human echovirus types 6 (E-6) and 30 (E-30) cause seasonal epidemics of aseptic meningitis. These two enteroviruses are frequently observed in co-circulation, an epidemiological pattern that is prerequisite for the occurrence of dual infections, which can lead to recombination between co-infecting virus strains. Viral sequences were determined at loci 1D (VP1 capsid protein) and 3CD (non structural proteins) in 49 E-6 strains recovered in a single geographical region in France from 1999 to 2007, during the epidemiological survey of enterovirus infections. They were compared with previously rec

We compared the neuroprotective effects of a liver-type isoform of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-IEa) and its splice variant, mechano-growth factor (MGF), isolated from active skeletal muscle. cDNAs of these peptides were injected into the facial muscle of adult rats prior to facial nerve avulsion. This resulted in significant neuroprotection of 88% and 37%, respectively, of motoneurons compared to control plasmid and avulsion-only groups. MGF is markedly more effective than the liver-type, systemic IGF-I for motoneuron survival, suggesting a major role for the peripheral target in adult n

Climate change-induced environmental alterations are significantly accelerating the development and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment through multiple interconnected pathways. Rising global temperatures facilitate bacterial adaptation and mutation rates, with studies demonstrating that even small temperature increases can enhance bacterial resistance gene stability and horizontal transfer efficiency. Extreme weather events such as flooding and droughts disrupt sanitation infrastructure, leading to increased pathogen transmission and subsequent antimicrobial use

Thifluzamide (TF) is a widely used phenyl urea fungicide in rice production; however, its impacts on the structural composition and functional dynamics of the rhizosphere microbiome remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of TF on the structure, interactions, and functional potential of the rice (Oryza sativa L.) rhizosphere microbiome using integrated amplicon sequencing and metagenomic approaches. TF application significantly altered both bacterial and fungal community composition, bacterial diversity was markedly reduced, whereas fungal diversity increased

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent metabolic disorder with complex gut microbiome involvement. While bacterial dysbiosis in NAFLD has been widely studied, the role of the gut virome remains largely unexplored. METHODS: We profiled gut viral communities from 90 NAFLD patients and 90 non-NAFLD controls using whole-metagenome shotgun sequencing. Viral taxonomic composition, host associations, and functional gene repertoires were analyzed. Serum metabolomic data were integrated to assess virus–metabolite interactions, and random forest models were constructed to ev

This pioneering study in Bangladesh combines phenotypic and genotypic approaches to characterize antibiotic-resistant bacteria in dairy farm wastewater, addressing a critical gap in regional antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research. Dairy farming is integral to global food production, yet the wastewater generated by these operations is a significant source of environmental and public health concerns, particularly in the context of antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to isolate and identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria from dairy farm wastewater and evaluate their antibiogram profiles to in

Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile pathogen that does not only occur in humans but also in various wild and domestic animals, including several avian species. When characterizing S. aureus isolates from waterfowl, isolates were identified as atypical CC133 by DNA microarray analysis. They differed from previously sequenced CC133 strains in the presence of the collagen adhesin gene cna; some also showed a different capsule type and a deviant spa type. Thus, they were subjected to whole-genome sequencing. This revealed multiple insertions of large regions of DNA from other S. aureus lineages i

Background: High frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection and the unknown mode of transmission prompted us to investigate H. pylori-wild housefly relationship. H. pylori causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer. H. pylori persists in the gut of the experimentally infected houseflies. The existence of H. pylori strains isolated from wild houseflies, on the other hand, has never been documented. Materials and Methods: In this study, 902 wild houseflies from different sites were identified as Musca domestica, then 60 flies were screened by traditional microbiological techniqu

Recently, we determined that BioR, the GntR family of transcription factor, acts as a repressor for biotin metabolism exclusively distributed in certain species of α-proteobacteria, including the zoonotic agent Brucella melitensis and the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens. However, the scenario is unusual in Paracoccus denitrificans, another closely related member of the same phylum α-proteobacteria featuring with denitrification. Not only does it encode two BioR homologs Pden_1431 and Pden_2922 (designated as BioR1 and BioR2, respectively), but also has six predictive BioR-recognizable

The complete genome sequences of Choristoneura occidentalis and C. rosaceana nucleopolyhedroviruses (ChocNPV and ChroNPV, respectively) (Baculoviridae: Alphabaculovirus) were determined and compared with each other and with those of other baculoviruses, including the genome of the closely related C. fumiferana NPV (CfMNPV). The ChocNPV genome was 128,446 bp in length (1147 bp smaller than that of CfMNPV), had a G+C content of 50.1%, and contained 148 open reading frames (ORFs). In comparison, the ChroNPV genome was 129,052 bp in length, had a G+C content of 48.6% and contained 149 ORFs. ChocNP

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization lists carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) as a critical priority pathogen. However, the links between resistance phenotypes, virulence factors, and clonal spread remain incompletely understood. We aimed to characterize the genotypic and phenotypic landscape of clinical CRPA isolates and evaluate whether specimen source or type III secretion effectors (exoT/exoY) serve as predictors of antibiotic resistance.
METHODS: Fifty-eight consecutive CRPA isolates from respiratory and non-respiratory specimens were analyzed. Susceptibility to 10 a

Aeromonas spp. are extensively distributed across diverse aquatic environments and recognized as pathogens capable of causing diseases in aquatic animals. Pathogenic Aeromonas causes foodborne gastroenteritis in humans and can also lead to extra-intestinal infections. However, accurate identification of Aeromonas species remains challenging. This study aimed to accurately identify Aeromonas spp. and compare their virulence gene profiles, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and molecular evolutionary relationships. A total of 42 Aeromonas isolates were obtained from retail food and foodborne dis

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the etiological agent of diphtheria, a disease caused by the presence of the diphtheria toxin. However, an increasing number of records report non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae infections. Here, a C. diphtheriae strain was recovered from a patient with a past history of bronchiectasis who developed a severe tracheo-bronchitis with multiple whitish lesions of the distal trachea and the mainstem bronchi. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS), performed in parallel with PCR targeting the toxin gene and the Elek test, provided clinically relevant results in a short turnaround tim
