The aim of this investigation was to examine the microbial populations and their resistance patterns towards antibiotics, including the impact of nitrogen metabolism in response to the reintroduction of antibiotics, as well as the presence of resistance genes in sediments from shrimp ponds that have been utilized for extended periods of 5, 15, and over 30 years. Results showed that the sediments exhibited a high prevalence of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Chloroflexi, and Oxyphotobacteria as the most abundant bacterial phyla, accounting for 70.35-77.43% of the total bacterial

The toxicity of dredged sediments from Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was evaluated using acute bioassays with Eisenia andrei and metal determination. The sediments were collected in August 2014 (winter) and February 2015 (summer) and in five areas distributed along the Bay: Port of Rio de Janeiro, Port of Niterói, Meriti River mouth, Iguaçu River mouth, and the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Guapimirim. The sediments were mixed with a ferralsol (a representative Brazilian tropical soil) in proportions varying between 0 (pure soil) and 30%. The acute bioassays with E. andrei fo

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms drive high rates of methanogenesis and carbon mineralization in wetland ecosystems. These signals are especially pronounced in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America, the tenth largest wetland ecosystem in the world. Sulfate reduction rates up to 22 μmol cm-3 day-1 have been measured in these wetland sediments, as well as methane fluxes up to 160 mg m-2 h-1-some of the highest emissions ever measured in North American wetlands. While pore waters from PPR wetlands are characterized by high concentrations of sulfur species and dissolved organic carbon, the constra

To lower phosphorus concentration in Xi'an moat, four different phosphorus-locking materials, namely, calcium nitrate, sponge-iron, fly ash, and silica alumina clay, were selected in this experiment to study their effects on water quality and sediment. Results of the continuous 68-day experiment showed that calcium nitrate was the most effective for controlling phosphorus concentration in overlying and interstitial water, where the efficiency of locking phosphorus was >97 and 90 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the addition of calcium nitrate caused Fe/Al-bound phosphorus (Fe/Al-P) content in sedim

Mangroves are complex and dynamic ecosystems highly dependent on diverse microbial activities. In the last decades, these ecosystems have been exposed to and affected by diverse human activities, such as waste disposal and accidental oil spills. Complex microbial communities inhabiting the soil and sediment of mangroves comprise microorganisms that have developed mechanisms to adapt to organic and inorganic contaminants. The resistance of these microbes to contaminants is an attractive property and also the reason why soil and sediment living microorganisms and their enzymes have been consider

Mercury (Hg) contamination of aquatic systems has been recognized as a global, serious problem affecting both wildlife and humans. High levels of Hg, in particular methylmercury (MeHg), were detected in surface sediments of Tagus Estuary. MeHg is neurotoxic and its concentration in aquatic systems is dependent upon the relative efficiency of reduction, methylation, and demethylation processes, which are mediated predominantly by the microbial community, in particular mercury-resistant (HgR) bacteria. Plants in contaminated ecosystems are known to take up Hg via plant roots. Therefore, the aims

This study focused on acclimating a microbial enrichment to biodegrade benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in a wide range of salinity. The enrichment degraded 120 mg/L toluene within 5d in the presence of 2M NaCl or 150 mg/L toluene within 7d in the presence of 1-1.5M NaCl. PCR-DGGE (polymerase chain reaction-denatured gradient gel electrophoresis) profiles demonstrated the dominant species in the enrichments distributed between five main phyla: Gammaproteobacteria, Sphingobacteriia, Prolixibacter, Flavobacteriia and Firmicutes. The Marinobacter, Prolixibacter, Balneola, Zunongw

A brief summary is given here about some of the geochemical methodologies that are often used to obtain information from fossils and sediments about the past environment. Such methods are frequently applied in our project in which the formation of Paleogene phosphate sequences in North Africa is investigated. These layers were deposited in shallow marine seas during a period of extreme warm climate with a high CO(2) concentration in the atmosphere. Some of the characteristics of this greenhouse interval are similar to the modern anthropogenic situation hence it is intensively investigated from

To determine the role of sediment denitrification in removing inputs of primary- (PE) and secondary-treated effluent (SE) from a pulp and paper mill (PPM), organic matter (OM) associated with PE (residual wood fiber) and SE (activated sludge biomass and phytoplankton) was added to estuarine intertidal sediments and denitrification rates were measured over 27 days. Labile sludge biomass and phytoplankton initially stimulated denitrification, including for pre-existing sediment N. After 2.5 d, however, denitrification was suppressed apparently due to microbial competition for N to process the re

Buffer zones such as artificial wetlands and forest buffers may help decrease non-point-source pesticide pollution from agricultural catchments. The present study focuses on understanding the role of the substrates mainly found in such buffer zones for pesticide adsorption and desorption. Radiolabeled [(14)C]isoproturon, [(14)C]metazachlor, and [(14)C]epoxiconazole were used to measure adsorption and desorption isotherms on wetland sediments and plants and forest soil and litter from two sites in France. Wetland sediments and forest soil exhibited the most important potential for pesticide ads

In Northern Alberta, the placement of out-of-pit oil sands tailings ponds atop natural buried sand channels is becoming increasingly common. Preliminary modeling of such a site suggests that process-affected (PA) pond water will infiltrate through the underlying clay till aquitard, reaching the sand channel. However, the impact of seepage upon native sediments and groundwater resources is not known. The goal of this study is to investigate the role of adsorption and ion exchange reactions in the clay till and their effect on the attenuation or release of inorganic species. This was evaluated u

Sulfur isotopes in ancient sediments provide a record of past environmental conditions. The long-time-scale variability and apparent asymmetry in the magnitude of minor sulfur isotope fractionation in Archean sediments remain unexplained. Using an integrated biogeochemical model of the Archean sulfur cycle, we find that the preservation of mass-independent sulfur is influenced by a variety of extra-atmospheric mechanisms, including biological activity and continental crust formation. Preservation of atmospherically produced mass-independent sulfur implies limited metabolic sulfur cycling befor

Halogenated organic compounds serve as terminal electron acceptors for anaerobic respiration in a diverse range of microorganisms. Here, we report on the widespread distribution and diversity of reductive dehalogenase homologous (rdhA) genes in marine subsurface sediments. A total of 32 putative rdhA phylotypes were detected in sediments from the southeast Pacific off Peru, the eastern equatorial Pacific, the Juan de Fuca Ridge flank off Oregon, and the northwest Pacific off Japan, collected at a maximum depth of 358 m below the seafloor. In addition, significant dehalogenation activity involv

This study was aimed at determining the spatial and temporal variation of P distribution in sediment of an artificial wetland for sewage and industrial wastewater treatment, and the fraction that is potentially involved in the P exchange processes. Influent, effluent, macrophytes and sediment at the inlet, middle and outlet areas were sampled over 24 months. The P-fractionation in sediment was performed following the EDTA method. Eichhornia crassipes and Typha domingensis removed P efficiently when cover was high, but E. crassipes caused anoxic conditions. The increase in cover of T. domingens

The rate of mercury methylation in anoxic wetland sediments is affected by the concentration of bioavailable complexes between Hg and sulfide. Previous research with pure bacterial cultures has shown that addition of ferrous iron reduces the net rate of mercury methylation by decreasing the concentration of dissolved sulfide. To assess the possibility of using this approach to decrease net mercury methylation in restored and constructed wetlands, laboratory experiments were conducted by adding Hg(II) and Fe(II) to sediments collected from six sites in five estuarine wetlands. Addition of 30 mM

While the bulk of human exposure to mercury is through the consumption of marine fish, most of what we know about mercury methylation and bioaccumulation is from studies of freshwaters. We know little of where and how mercury is methylated in the open oceans, and there is currently a debate whether methylmercury concentrations in marine fish have increased along with global anthropogenic mercury emissions. Measurements of mercury concentrations in Yellowfin tuna caught off Hawaii in 1998 show no increase compared to measurements of the same species caught in the same area in 1971. On the basis

Two Gram-stain-negative strains, designated SYSU M81236T and SYSU M81241, were isolated from marine sediments collected from the South China Sea (Sansha City, Hainan Province, China). Both strains were aerobic and grew at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0), 4-37 °C (optimum 28 °C), and in the presence of 0-12% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 4%). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that both strains belong to the genus Pseudoalteromonas. Strain SYSU M81236T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica CGMCC 1.8499 T (98.7%). Stra

Chitin, a major structural component of arthropod exoskeletons, is an abundant carbon and nitrogen source in marine ecosystems. While its degradation is well studied in oxic waters, the microbial processes and interactions that mediate its anaerobic breakdown in deep-sea sediments remain poorly understood. Iron oxides are predicted to be energetically favorable electron acceptors for anaerobic chitin degradation, yet the spatial separation of insoluble substrates and the required microbial partnerships in sediments are not well defined. Here, we used potentiostatically controlled bioelectroche
