BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of combined allergic and irritant contact dermatitis is an accepted subdiagnosis for hand dermatitis, and it is often considered in a patient with contact dermatitis, a positive and relevant patch test result, and wet work exposure. We therefore hypothesize that it is arbitrary for wet work exposure to be taken into consideration in a patient with newly diagnosed relevant contact allergy. Furthermore, an overestimation of the diagnosis will probably occur if the criteria for wet work exposure are applied correctly, as many occupations have an element of wet work.

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to polyvinylchloride (PVC) gloves has been reported relatively seldom. In spring 2011, 5 of our patients had patch test reactions to PVC gloves. We obtained a collection of PVC raw materials from industrial producers and suppliers of chemical compounds to be patch tested on patients with suspected PVC glove contact allergy.

Hand eczema (HE) is a frequent skin disease, combining endogenous and exogenous factors. Occupational -or work-related- hand eczema (OHE) is frequently a chronic and relapsing disease, due to irritant and allergenic contacts. Burden of disease is important, since OHE strikes quality of life of the patient, has significant social and economic impact, and may jeopardize his professional future. The management of OHE combines etiological assessment, efficient symptomatic treatment and adaptation of working conditions.

Phaeohyphomycosis is a rare fungal infection that is more commonly associated with immunocompromised patients. We present a case in which a 77-year-old woman with non-Hodgkin lymphoma developed subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala xenobiotica. E. xenobiotica is a dematiaceous hyphomycete that was recently identified as a segregant of the E. jeanselmei complex. The patient was successfully treated with local excision of the lesions and post-surgical oral itraconazole. The latter was administered with the aim of preventing systemic dissemination in this immunocompromised patient.

Hedgehogs have recently become popular exotic pets in Korea. Several diseases may be acquired from these animals including dermatophytosis, Salmonella infections, contact urticaria and possibly Mycobacterium infections. We describe here a 15-year-old girl who developed tinea manuum after keeping a hedgehog for 4 months. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic and mycological examination. The causative agent was identified as Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei, a zoophilic dermatophyte.

BACKGROUND: Malignant acanthosis nigricans is a mucocutaneous eruption associated with internal malignancies. Tripe palms refers to a characteristic velvety thickening of the palms, with exaggeration of normal skin markings. A 73-years old patient came to our outpatient clinic because of a blue discoloration of his hands. Furthermore there was a systemic inflammatory reaction, burning pain and numbness of his feet due to a polyneuropathy, and an indolent enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes. In 1996 and 2001 cervical lymph node resections were done because of localized angiofollicular lymphnode hyperplasia (Castleman's disease).
