Using materials from a nationwide screening project on inborn errors of metabolism in Japan, the incidence of histidinemia, phenylketonuria, galactosemia and homocystinuria were found to be 140, 16, 14 and 7 in 1 million live births, respectively. Geographical variations were observed, especially in histidinemia, which are most likely due to chance.

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) phenotypes and serum levels were measured in 518 employees at a sulphite pulp factory. There were 439 men and 79 women with the mean age of 42 years (range 18-65 years). Two fertile male tortoiseshell Burmese cats with atypical coat color distribution were found to have normal 38XY karyotypes. Synaptonemal complex analysis of one of these cats revealed normal meiotic pairing. A survey of hereditary hemoglobin disorders in a mixed Brazilian population of the northeast of the State of S. Paulo revealed a 5.3% incidence of abnormal phenotypes among 400 schoolchildren, 4.5% among 602 mothers and 2.8% among 606 newborns. Individual differences with respect to the sneezing reflex are described. Visual exposure to strong light may induce a sneezing reaction in about 20% of the individuals in the Swedish population. Preliminary data indicate that the ' sneezer trait' may be inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. The eventual selective advantage of ST is discussed.

Cytological and cytotoxic effects of kepone on Chinese hamster cells (M3-1) were investigated. Cells treated with 2 micrograms, 4 micrograms, and 6 micrograms/ml of kepone did not show any morphological abnormalities. However, cytological observations showed that chromosome breaks, chromatid breaks, dicentric chromosomes, and chromosome interchanges were produced by these treatments. Cytotoxic studies revealed dose response and time response reactions to kepone. Cell toxicity was greater at the 30 micrograms/ml concentration, producing 100 percent cell death within 24 hours.

A new mutation causing spherocytic, hemolytic anemia has been discovered in the house mouse. It is inherited as a single autosomal recessive gene, allelic with both sph and ha, which, in turn, were shown to be allelic with each other. A revised nomenclature for the three apparent alleles is proposed: sph (formerly sph), sphha (formerly ha), and sph2Bc (the new mutation). Like the other murine hemolytic anemias, sph2Bc involves a defect in the red blood cell membrane protein, spectrin.

Male hypopituitary Snell dwarf mice showed significantly more autosomal univalents in diakinesis-metaphase I (7.75 percent) and more anaphase I nondisjunction (2.68 percent) than normal mice (autosomal univalents: 4.9 percent; nondisjunction: 1.00 percent). The values of male dwarf mice, artificially made hyperthyroid, were between values of untreated dwarfs and normals (autosomal univalents: 5.25 percent; nondisjunction: 2.25 percent), but could not be shown to differ significantly from either value.

Lactose absorption was studied in 570 health adolescent and adult males in Egypt. Employing a field version of the noninvasive hydrogen breath test, 156 (27.4%) lactose absorbers and 414 (72.6%) lactose malabsorbers were identified. The age-specific prevalence of the lactose phenotypes indicated that lactase repression is complete at the age of 14 years in Egyptians. Many mice of the inbred strain BALB/cCF have deficient corpus callosum, and a few of them have total absence of this large forebrain commissure. Reciprocal F1 hybrid crosses with the inbred strains A/J, C57BL/6J, and DBA/2J revealed that inheritance of the defect is completely recessive. Reciprocal backcrosses to BALB/cCf revealed that inheritance is not attributable to a single Mendelian locus with the same degree of penetrance as in the parent strain. The ac locus has not been rediscovered. Instead, there is good reason to withdraw ac from current listings of Mendelian loci in the mouse.

The widths of all six molars were examined in coisogenic house mice of strain 129/J to determine whether they were being influenced by chinchilla alleles at the albino locus. Eight generations of selection were practiced for post-weaning gain in body weight and for litter size at birth in two outbred stocks of mice and in a stock derived by crossing these outbreds.
