Clinical significance and developmental changes of auditory-language-related gamma activity.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the clinical impact and developmental changes of auditory-language-related augmentation of gamma activity at 50-120 Hz recorded on electrocorticography (ECoG). METHODS: We analyzed data from 77 epileptic patients ranging 4-56 years in age. We determined the effects of seizure-onset zone, electrode location, and patient-age upon gamma-augmentation elicited by an auditory-naming task. RESULTS: Gamma-augmentation was less frequently elicited within seizure-onset sites compared to other sites. Regardless of age, gamma-augmentation most often involved the 80-100 Hz freque…

Language-universal sensory deficits in developmental dyslexia: English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Studies in sensory neuroscience reveal the critical importance of accurate sensory perception for cognitive development. There is considerable debate concerning the possible sensory correlates of phonological processing, the primary cognitive risk factor for developmental dyslexia. Across languages, children with dyslexia have a specific difficulty with the neural representation of the phonological structure of speech. The identification of a robust sensory marker of phonological difficulties would enable early identification of risk for developmental dyslexia and early targeted intervention. …

Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism: language, motor and cognitive profiles.

The objective of this study is to compare the cognitive profile, the motor and language functioning and the psychosocial adaptation of children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and with high-functioning autism (HFA). Subjects were recruited through the department Autism and Developmental Disorders of the Heckscher-Klinikum. To be included in the study, the full-scale-IQ had to be at least 80. Subjects with AS had to have a normal early language development and subjects with HFA a clear delay in language development, as reported by their parents. The sample consisted of 57 children with Asperger syn…

Categorical speech perception deficits distinguish language and reading impairments in children.

We examined categorical speech perception in school-age children with developmental dyslexia or Specific Language Impairment (SLI), compared to age-matched and younger controls. Stimuli consisted of synthetic speech tokens in which place of articulation varied from 'b' to 'd'. Children were tested on categorization, categorization in noise, and discrimination. Phonological awareness skills were also assessed to examine whether these correlated with speech perception measures. We observed similarly good baseline categorization rates across all groups; however, when noise was added, the SLI grou…

Language planning disturbances in children who clutter or have learning disabilities.

The primary objective of this paper is to determine to what extent disturbances in the fluency of language production of children who clutter might be related to, or differ from difficulties in the same underlying processes of language formulation seen in children with learning disabilities. It is hypothesized that an increase in normal dysfluencies and sentence revisions in children who clutter reflect different neurolinguistic process to those of children with learning disabilities. To test this idea, 150 Dutch speaking children, aged 10;6 to 12;11 years, were divided in three groups (clutte…

Population-based validation of a German-language self-administered headache questionnaire.

We validated a German-language self-administered headache questionnaire for migraine (M), tension-type headache (TTH) and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia (TAC) in a general population sample of people with headache. Randomly selected subjects (n = 240) diagnosed by the questionnaire as M (n = 60), TTH (n = 60), a combination of M and TTH (M+TTH, n = 60) and TAC (n = 60) were invited for examination by headache specialists. One hundred and ninety-three subjects (80%) were studied. Sensitivity and specificity for M were 0.85 and 0.85, for TTH 0.6 and 0.88, for M+TTH 0.82 and 0.87, respectively.…

Altered effective connectivity within the language network in primary progressive aphasia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative dementia syndrome principally characterized by the gradual dissolution of language functions, especially in the early stages of disorder. In a previous functional neuroimaging study, PPA patients were found to activate core language areas similarly to control subjects when performing semantic and phonological processing tasks (Sonty et al., 2003). In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and dynamic causal modeling (DCM) were used to study multiregional effective connectivity in early-stage PPA (n = 8) and contr…

Translational research on early language development: current challenges and future directions.

There is a pressing need for the early and accurate identification of young children at risk for language and other developmental disabilities and the provision of timely, age-appropriate intervention, as mandated by Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Research has shown that early intervention is effective for many language impaired children in different etiological groups, and can reduce the functional impact of persistent disorders on children and their families. Yet, the accurate identification of infants and toddlers at risk for language impairment remains elusive, …

Language-related brain function during word repetition in post-stroke aphasics.

We compared fMRI findings (using SPM99) obtained with repetition task in normal subjects with those of two patients with Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia who received speech therapy and showed complete recovery. Both aphasic patients with left hemisphere damage who showed complete recovery exhibited activation of only the compensatory area in the right hemisphere during the repetition task. Recovery from Broca's aphasia involves reorganization and neuromodulation between the external temporopolar area and the anterior superior temporal area of the superior temporal gyrus, putamen and the inferio

Female laryngectomees' satisfaction with communication methods and speech-language pathology services.

132 female laryngectomees responded to a questionnaire regarding satisfaction with their communication methods as postlaryngectomees and speech-language pathology services. Respondents were satisfied overall with their primary communication selection; however, most would like to try a method that produced a more feminine-sounding voice. 68% were satisfied with their speech-language pathology services.

Human brain plasticity: evidence from sensory deprivation and altered language experience.

The results from the language studies taken as a whole point to different developmental time courses and developmental vulnerabilities of aspects of grammatical and semantic/lexical processing. They thus provide support for conceptions of language that distinguish these subprocesses within language. Similarly, following auditory deprivation, processes associated with the dorsal visual pathway were more altered than were functions associated with the ventral pathway, providing support for conceptions of visual system organization that distinguish functions along these lines. Could the effects o…

PET evaluation of bilingual language compensation following early childhood brain damage.

We report a positron emission tomography (PET) study in a 37-year-old, right handed, bilingual (English and American Sign Language) male with left frontal lobe damage, without evidence of language or general intellectual dysfunction. A brain MRI scan demonstrated an atrophic lesion of the left dorsolateral prefrontal, orbital, and opercular cortices extending from the frontal pole to precentral gyrus and including parts of anterior cingulate cortex, due to an probable infantile encephalitis. H(2) (15)O PET scans found evidence of increased right hemisphere activity compared to normal controls …

Attentional control over language lateralization in dyslexic children: deficit or delay?

Two previous verbal dichotic studies by Kershner and Morton (Neuropsychologia 28, 181-198, 1990) using the forced-attention methodology (Bryden, Strategies of Information Processing, Academic Press, London, 1978) demonstrated that the order in which the ears were monitored (LE first or RE first) determined whether learning disabled children compared to age-matched nondisabled children were more weakly or strongly lateralized. The same technique was used with the addition of controls for lateral head and eye movements, specific diagnostic criteria to include only phonological dyslexics, IQ and

The human cerebro-cerebellar system: its computing, cognitive, and language skills.

In this review of the human cerebro-cerebellar system, the focus is on the possible contributions of the cerebellum to cognitive and language functions. The role of the cerebellum in these human functions has tended to be obscured by the traditional preoccupation with the motor functions of the cerebellum, which have been widely observed in other vertebrates as well. In the human brain, some phylogenetically new parts evolved and enlarged in the cerebellum, concomitantly with the enlargement of association areas in the cerebral cortex. Anatomical evidence and behavioral evidence combine to sug…

[Left anterior choroidal artery syndrome with language disorders and constructional apraxia].

The infarction in the territory of the anterior choroidal artery may induce a sensory motor impairment and neuropsychological symptoms close to those observed in some thalamic lesions. In a right handed man with a left sided infarction, language disturbances and constructional apraxia were observed. Cerebral blood flow measurements were performed 4 days after the stroke with the 133Xenon inhalation method. A decrease of mean hemispheric values was observed on both sides but more so on the left hemisphere, in the left frontoparietal regions. 98 days after the stroke language and constructional …

Semantic disorders of auditory language comprehension in right brain-damaged patients.

A test of auditory language comprehension was given to 110 right brain-damaged patients and to 94 normal controls in order to check if patients with lesions of the right (nondominant) hemisphere make a significantly higher number of semantic errors than normals. Confirmation of the hypothesis was obtained, but the relationship between semantic errors and lesion of the right hemisphere did not seem a simple and direct one. In fact, most of the lexical-semantic errors were due to associated variables (such as unilateral spatial agnosia and general mental deterioration) and not to the lesion of t…
