The role of omega-3 fatty acids in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

It has long been recognized from epidemiological studies that Greenland Eskimos have substantially reduced rates of acute myocardial infarction (MI) compared with Western controls. From these epidemiological observations, the benefits of fatty fish consumption have been explored in cell culture and animal studies, as well as randomized controlled trials investigating the cardioprotective effects of omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary omega-3 fatty acids seem to stabilize the myocardium electrically, resulting in reduced susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmias, thereby reducing the risk of sudden de

Microbiome-Metabolome Crosstalk as a Driver of COVID-19 Severity.

Background: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, exhibits highly variable severity, from mild symptoms to respiratory failure and multiorgan dysfunction. Traditional risk factors incompletely explain this heterogeneity, highlighting the potential role of gut microbiota and host metabolomics in modulating immune responses. Methods: Thus, this study investigates how gut microbiota variations are associated with plasma metabolite profiles in COVID-19, exploring relationships between microbial and metabolic signatures and disease severity and potential therapeutic targets. In a prospective cohort of 55

Effects of hawthorn pectin and its oligomers on gut microbiota and metabolites in high-fat diet mice.

Pectin is an acidic heteropolysaccharide with natural, green, and inexpensive characteristics. Compared to polysaccharides, oligosaccharides are more easily utilized by the body, and the physiological function of hawthorn pectin oligosaccharides (POS) may vary depending on their degree of polymerization (DP). Therefore, we mainly studied the effects of hawthorn pectin (HP) and POS with different DP on gut microbiota disorders induced by high-fat diet (HFD). HP and POS both improved weight gain, dyslipidemia, and glucose homeostasis caused by HFD, and increased serum GLP-1 levels. Meanwhile, th

n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids-enriched fish oil attenuates chronic alcohol-induced liver injury via a mechanism involving the upregulation of Retsat.

This study aimed to delineate the protective role of fish oil against alcoholic liver disease (ALD), identify the principal active component between eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3), and elucidate the molecular mechanisms. C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to receive either an alcohol-fed (AF) or pair-fed control (PF) diet, enriched with fish oil (FO) or corn oil (CO) for four weeks. Additionally, a series of in vitro experiments were performed using AML-12 cells to further investigate potential mechanisms. The results showed that plasma level

Metabolomics and 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing Analyses of Changes in the Intestinal Flora and Biomarkers Induced by Gastrodia-Uncaria Treatment in a Rat Model of Chronic Migraine.

Accumulating evidence suggests that natural medicines have notable curative effects on neurological conditions, such as migraine, that are mediated by regulating the gut microbial flora. A natural medicine pair used in traditional Chinese medicine, Gastrodia elata Blume and Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq. ex Havil. (GU), have shown excellent effect in treating migraine, yet the role of gut microbes in the therapeutic effect of GU in chronic migraine (CMG) is unknown. Here, we performed a 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomics study of the effects of GU in a nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced rat

The incidence of prenatal alcohol exposure in Montevideo Uruguay as determined by meconium analysis.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to a wide range of deficits known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Epidemiologic studies regarding alcohol consumption in pregnancy have concentrated on North America, but recent reports have suggested that consumption is significant in many parts of the world. In Uruguay, alcohol consumption has changed into more risky and dangerous patterns and thus has a theoretical risk of having a high rate of prenatal alcohol exposure. This study characterizes the incidence of prenatal alcohol exposure in Montevideo, Uruguay, using a novel biomarker, fatty acid ethyl

The role of prostaglandins in human hypertension.

A large body of evidence supports the concept that prostaglandins (PG) are importantly involved in arterial pressure regulation. Various PGs, especially PGE2 and prostacyclin (PGI2) may influence blood pressure through control of vascular tone, sodium excretion, and renin release. Inhibition of PG synthesis by nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) augments the vasoconstrictor response to exogenous pressors such as angiotensin II, arginine vasopressin (AVP), and fludrocortisone. The acute administration of NSAID to either normotensive or untreated hypertensive subjects results in an incre

Temperature and water activity interactively regulate the growth and aflatoxin biosynthesis of Aspergillus flavus in dried red chili peppers: A predictive modeling and multi-omics study.

Dried red chili pepper is widely consumed yet prone to contamination by Aspergillus flavus and its carcinogenic aflatoxins, though how this fungus grows and produces toxins on this distinctive substrate remains poorly understood. This study examined the effects of temperature and water activity (aw) on A. flavus growth and aflatoxin (AF) production in dried red chili pepper, and explored the associated molecular and metabolic responses through multi-omics analyses. Four isolates tested at 15-42 °C and aw 0.86-0.98 showed optimal mycelial growth at 30-37 °C and aw 0.98, whereas AF production pe

Exogenous GA3 delays walnut fruit maturation and alters kernel fatty acid composition by modulating genes and hormones during development.

Regulation of walnut fruit maturation is crucial for delaying harvest and maintaining kernel quality. In this study, 'Qingxiang' walnut (Juglans regia L.) fruit were treated with 300 mg L-1 gibberellic acid (GA3) during 20-100 days after flowering (DAF) to assess its effects on fruit development, kernel nutrient composition and endogenous hormonal dynamics. GA3 treatment decreased walnut husk cracking and peeling incidences at 154 DAF by 46 and 59 percentage points, respectively, and delayed fruit abscission by 7 days compared to the control. In the husk, GA3 treatment postponed the accumulati
