Congenital as arteriovenous malformation(AVM) is, most patients with AVM would be asymptomatic until adults. During the past 2 years, 23 cases of adult supratentorial AVM patients had DTI after admission. The region of interest was placed in the cerebral peduncle. Their FA value and fiber number was compared with those of cavernous malformation (CM) and tumor (glioma and meningioma). Spasmodic torticollis due to an identified focal brain stem lesion is uncommon and abrupt-onset spasmodic torticollis due to midbrain lesions in humans is rarely reported. A 9-year-old female child who had fallen off a bicycle and had lost consciousness for 10 min, vomiting 2-3 times, developed acute torticollis immediately after the injury. Examinations suggested hemorrhage in brain stem cavernoma. A search of the literature written in English revealed that this type of presentation has not been reported previously.

Two patients with Parkinson's disease who underwent implantation of fetal mesencephalic tissue into the putamen were serially studied using positron emission tomography and [18F]6-L-fluorodopa ([18F]dopa). The uptake of [18F]dopa is related to the functional integrity of the presynaptic dopaminergic system. Preoperative studies revealed a marked decrease in putamen [18F]dopa uptake, with lesser involvement of the caudate. The cheiro-oral syndrome is a well-known peculiar sensory disturbance seen around the corner of the mouth and in the palm of the hand on the same side. However, sensory disturbance around the corner of the mouth, in the palm of the hand and in the foot on the same side (cheiro-oral-pedal syndrome) has not been reported until now. We examined 2 cases of cheiro-oral-pedal syndrome; the lesion responsible was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging to be in the medial lemniscus and in the ventral ascending tract of the trigeminal nerve.

Cavernous haemangiomas cavernomas of the brainstem can be diagnosed by MRI and safely removed when elective surgery is performed in the subacute stage after haemorrhage. Recurrent haemorrhage and/or neurological deterioration are indications for surgery. In cases with additional venous malformation the cavernoma should be selectively removed. The experiences with our own series of 18 cases are presented.
