Predominant determinants for evaluation of right parasternal approach in transthoracic echocardiography in aortic stenosis: a study based on three-dimensional cardiac computed tomography analysis.

The maximum blood flow velocity through the aortic valve (AVmax) using Doppler transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is important in assessing the severity of aortic stenosis (AS). The right parasternal (RP) approach has been reported to be more useful than the apical approach, but the anatomical rationale has not been studied. We aimed to clarify the influence of the angle formed by the ascending aorta and left ventricle on Doppler analysis by TTE (Sep-Ao angle) and three-dimensional multidetector computed tomography (3D-MDCT) in patients with AS. A total of 151 patients evaluated using the RP…

Hidden lesions: a case of burnt remains.

UNLABELLED: One of the many challenging cases that forensic pathologists, anthropologists, and forensic imaging experts have to face are burnt human remains. Perpetrators frequently attempt to hide/destroy evidence and make the body unidentifiable by exposing it to fire. We present a case of a partially burnt body found in an apartment after an explosion. First, multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) images and the following autopsy revealed several lesions on the cranium. Forensic anthropologists were involved in order to specify the aetiology of the lesions observed on the cranium. Through…

Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasms with rupture of the distal main pancreatic duct: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN) is a rare and newly described entity defined as an intraductal, grossly visible, tubule-forming epithelial neoplasm with high-grade dysplasia and ductal differentiation without overt production of mucin. Because of its rarity, the clinical and molecular aspects of ITPN have not been fully investigated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old woman presented to a local hospital with epigastric discomfort and pain. Abdominal multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) revealed a 2.5-cm hypovascular tumor in the pancreatic body with distal pancre

Delayed Rupture of a Normal Appearing Spleen After Trauma: Is Our Knowledge Enough? Two Case Reports.

BACKGROUND Non-operative management is considered the gold standard for hemodynamically stable patients with splenic injuries. Delayed splenic rupture is a well-known complication of non-operative management in splenic trauma, with a relevant impact on mortality and morbidity. Most of the reported cases of delayed splenic rupture presented splenic injury at admission imaging or no imaging investigations were performed. We report 2 cases of delayed splenic rupture after blunt trauma, in which multidetector computed tomography (CT) scan at admission did not show any splenic injury.   CASE REPORT…

Facial fractures: classification and highlights for a useful report.

In patients with facial trauma, multidetector computed tomography is the first-choice imaging test because it can detect and characterize even small fractures and their associated complications quickly and accurately. It has helped clinical management and surgical planning, so radiologists must communicate their findings to surgeons effectively. In Le Fort fractures, there is a breach between the pterygoid plates and the posterior maxilla. These fractures are classified in three basic patterns that can be combined and associated with various complications. Conceptualized when low-speed trauma …

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Silent Brain Infarction in Patients with Aortic Stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Silent brain infarction (SBI) is an independent risk factor for subsequent symptomatic stroke in the general population. Although aortic stenosis (AS) is also known to be associated with an increased risk of future symptomatic stroke, little is known regarding the prevalence and risk factors for SBI in patients with AS. METHODS: The study population comprised 83 patients with severe AS with no history of stroke or transient ischemic attack and paralysis or sensory impairment (mean age 75 ± 7 years). All patients underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging to screen for SBI and mu

Epidemiology, anatomy, pathophysiology and clinical evaluation of functional tricuspid regurgitation.

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is commonly encountered in the management of patients with a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Primary TR is … ssess TR. In situations where 2D-TEE is limited, 3D-TTE and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), multidetector computed tomography (CT) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide additional information. Classification schemes have been proposed that focus not only on the severity of TR, but also on annular dilation and the mode of leaflet coaptation. Despite often …

Spectrum of critical imaging findings in complex facial skeletal trauma.

Multidetector computed tomography (CT) is the modality of choice for the evaluation of facial trauma because it helps accurately identify and characterize fractures and associated complications, thereby aiding timely clinical management and surgical planning. In particular, CT clearly depicts clinically relevant fractures in the eight osseous struts or buttresses that function as an underlying scaffold for facial structures. Information about the involvement of specific facial buttresses in a complex fracture is helpful for determining the type of fracture present and for identifying associate…
