The effect of platelet-rich plasma on normal soft tissues in the rabbit.

BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich plasma is reported to contain multiple growth factors, and has been utilized in orthopaedic surgery to aid healing in multiple tissues. To date, the use of autologous platelet-rich plasma has not been studied for its effects on normal soft tissue. METHODS: Eighteen adult New Zealand White rabbits were injected with 0.5 mL of autologous platelet-rich plasma in the right or left quadriceps muscle, Achilles tendon, medial collateral ligament, subcutaneous tissue, tibial periosteum, and ankle joint. Saline solution was injected on the contralateral side as a control. The…

Implant-borne prosthetic rehabilitation of bone-grafted cleft versus traumatic anterior maxillary defects.

PURPOSE: This study hypothesizes comparable implant success in bone-grafted cleft-alveolus versus traumatic anterior maxillary defects. Though of different pathogenesis, both defects comprise bone deficit, scarred periosteum, and soft tissues. Additional complicating factors are isolated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty cleft and 20 traumatic defect cases were followed-up 48 months in average. After 9 secondary and 11 tertiary cleft-osteoplasties, 25 implants were inserted; in traumatic defects following 8 two-stage and 12 one-stage osteoplasties, 37 incisor or canine implants were inserted. Lack of insulin-like growth factor I exaggerates the effect of calcium deficiency on bone accretion in mice.

Recent studies provide evidence that the GH/IGF-I axis plays a critical role in the regulation of bone accretion that occurs during puberty … formation parameters and a much greater increase in the resorbing surface of both the endosteum and periosteum of the tibia of IGF-I KO mice compared with WT mice. Accordingly, femur BMD measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry or peripheral quantitative computed tomography increased significantly in IGF-I WT mice fed the low calcium diet, but not in IGF …

Mapping quantitative trait loci that influence femoral cross-sectional area in mice.

Size and shape are critical determinants of the mechanical properties of skeletal elements and can be anticipated to be highly heritable. Mo … ss. Femora were harvested from 16-week-old mice and FCSA (bone and marrow space enclosed within the periosteum) was measured at the midshaft by digital image analysis. In all mouse populations examined, FCSA was positively correlated with body weight and weight-corrected FCSA (WC-FCSA) values were normally distributed in the BXD-RI and F2 populations, sugges …

Significantly increased bone volume in a critical-sized defect model in the rat animal model by transplantation of a stand-alone vascularized periosteal flap.

PURPOSE: The repair of bony non-unions remains challenging and often requires graft material due to limited availability of autologous bone. The aim of this study was to investigate the potency of a stand-alone pedicled periosteal flap (PF) versus a ligated periosteal flap (PFx), an empty defect and a crossover group in terms of newly formed bone in a 5 mm critical-sized defect in the rat femur diaphysis. METHODS: The following 4 treatment groups were formed out of a total of 36 male Sprague Dawley rats: Pedicled periosteal flap, ligated periosteal flap, crossover (each n = 10) and empty defe

Minimally invasive subperiosteal pocket technique for Osia 2 system- implantation without fixation.

The CochlearTM Osia® 2 is an active transcutaneous implant designed to treat patients with different types of hearing loss. Due to its size, implantation needs appropriate practice since the necessity of extended flap creation and bone work can be an issue in some cases. The goal of our study was to determine whether fixation of the OSI200 implant was necessary for the performance of patients with conductive or mild mixed hearing loss. The vibroacoustic performance of the Osia 2 system, with and without BI300 fixation, was evaluated through tests conducted on a head model. In addition, three pa

Mechanical load regulates bone growth via periosteal Osteocrin.

Mechanical stimuli including loading after birth promote bone growth. However, little is known about how mechanical force triggers biochemical signals to regulate bone growth. Here, we identified a periosteal-osteoblast-derived secretory peptide, Osteocrin (OSTN), as a mechanotransducer involved in load-induced long bone growth. OSTN produced by periosteal osteoblasts regulates growth plate growth by enhancing C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP)-dependent proliferation and maturation of chondrocytes, leading to elongation of long bones. Additionally, OSTN cooperates with CNP to regulate bone form

Expression of collagens in the otosclerotic bone.

The etiopathogenesis of otosclerosis is still controversially discussed. The major hypotheses discussed are a viral infection on a genetic background and an (autoimmune) collagen disease. The aim of our study was to investigate by immunohistochemistry the expression pattern of collagens within the otosclerotic focus. Stapes footplates from 30 patients with clinical otosclerosis undergoing stapedectomy were formalin fixed, decalcified and paraffin embedded. As controls, 30 autoptic temporal bone specimens were employed. We investigated the expression of collagens I-V with immunohistochemistry.

[Orbital complications of acute pediatric rhinosinusitis: medical treatment versus surgery and analysis of the computer tomogram].

BACKGROUND: One of the most common complications of acute pediatric rhinosinusitis is orbital complication. For subperiosteal abscess, in particular, there are no generally accepted therapy recommendations. PATIENTS: A retrospective study of 45 children with acute orbital rhinosinusitis complications, treated on an in-patient basis at the Department of ENT, Inselspital, University of Bern (1999-2004) is presented. The aim was to analyze conservative medical versus surgical treatment with regard to the individual stages of complications (according to the classification of Moloney, 1987) and, s

A technique for osseous restoration of deficient edentulous maxillary ridges.

A technique for maxillary bone grafting to augment the atrophic ridge is presented, and the results from 15 cases followed from three to ten years are briefly described. Loss of postoperative ridge height ranged from 10-20% in this sample. It appears that the tendencies to postoperative resorption that occur when autogenous particulate cancellous bone grafts are employed to restore atrophic mandibles are not operative in the maxilla.

Pedicled Inferior Turbinate-Nasal Floor and Septal Mucoperiosteal Flap Resurfacing for PRNN.

OBJECTIVES: Postradiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) is one of the most severe and famous complications after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Resurfacing with pedicle nasal floor-nasal septum muco-periosteal flap after PRNN debridement is important and effective. However, the flap is limited for recovering large lesions like the parapharyngeal space and cervical vertebra. Here, we introduced a pedicle inferior turbinate-nasal floor and septal mucoperiosteal flap (inferior turbinate-nasal flap, ITNF) for reconstruction. METHODS: From November 2012 to July 2025, 71 PRNN pat

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation in the lingual area of the mandibular body versus osteochondroma at the mandibular condyle.

BACKGROUND: Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is benign and usually occurs in the small tubular bones of the hands and feet, but it is extremely rare in the oral and maxillofacial region. METHODS: The present study compares a case of BPOP occurring in the lingual area of the right mandibular body with a representative case of osteochondroma occurring in the left mandibular condyle using immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: BPOP showed no continuity to the cortical bone of the mandible on X-ray and was histologically composed of immature cartilage and bone tissues, wh

Orbital wall infarction mimicking periorbital cellulitis in a patient with sickle cell disease.

Orbital wall infarction and subperiosteal haematomas are unusual manifestations of sickling disorders. Here we report an 11-year-old girl with sickle cell anaemia having multiple skull infarctions including the orbital bony structures associated with subperiosteal haematomas. The diagnosis was made by MRI, which showed bone marrow changes and associated haemorrhagic collections. The patient was successfully managed without surgical intervention.
