Probing Alzheimer's pathology: Exploring the next generation of FDDNP analogues for amyloid β detection.

Fluorescent probes are a powerful tool for imaging amyloid β (Aβ) plaques, the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Herein, we report the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of 21 novel probes as well as their optical properties and binding affinities to Aβ fibrils. One of these dyes, 1Ae, exhibited several improvements over FDDNP, an established biomarker for Aβ- and Tau-aggregates. First, 1Ae had large Stokes shifts (138-213 nm) in various solvents, thereby reducing self-absorption. With a high quantum yield ratio (φ(dichloromethane/methanol) = 104), 1Ae also ensures minimal backgr

Controlling Electronic Coupling of Acene Chromophores on Quantum Dot Surfaces through Variable-Concentration Ligand Exchange.

Controlling the binding of functional organic molecules on quantum dot (QD) surfaces and the resulting ligand/QD interfacial structure determines the resulting organic-inorganic hybrid behavior. In this study, we vary the binding of tetracenedicarboxylate ligands bound to PbS QDs cast in thin films by performing solid-state ligand exchange of as-produced bound oleate ligands. We employ comprehensive Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis coupled with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometric measurements, transient absorption, and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations to study

Chemical Tuning of Exciton versus Charge-Transfer Excited States in Conformationally Restricted Arylene Cages.

Covalent assemblies of conjugated organic chromophores provide the opportunity to engineer new excited states with novel properties. In this work, a newly developed triple-stranded cage architecture, in which meta-substituted aromatic caps serve as covalent linking groups that attach to both top and bottom of the conjugated molecule walls, is used to tune the properties of thiophene oligomer assemblies. Benzene-capped and triazine-capped 5,5'-(2,2-bithiophene)-containing arylene cages are synthesized and characterized using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. The conformation

Half- and quarter-metals in rhombohedral trilayer graphene.

Ferromagnetism is most common in transition metal compounds where electrons occupy highly localized d orbitals. However, ferromagnetic order may also arise in low-density two-dimensional electron systems1-5. Here we show that gate-tuned van Hove singularities in rhombohedral trilayer graphene6 drive spontaneous ferromagnetic polarization of the electron system into one or more spin and valley flavours. Using capacitance and transport measurements, we observe a cascade of transitions tuned to the density and electronic displacement field between phases in which quantum oscillations have fourfol

In silico study for inhibiting thyroid hormone sulfotransferase activity by halogenated phenolic chemicals.

Thyroid hormones (THs) are essential to proper growth and development of human bodies. Inhibiting the sulfation metabolism of THs has been demonstrated to be an important way for some environmental pollutants, such as halogenated phenolic compounds, to interfere THs homeostasis, thereby causing health problems. However, the important property characteristics that govern the sulfation inhibition of these chemicals are not well understood, and the experimental data on inhibition potential is limited. In this work, an in silico approach was developed to investigate the structure-activity relation

Cooperativity of halogen, chalcogen, and pnictogen bonds in infinite molecular chains by electronic structure theory.

Halogen bonds (XBs) are intriguing noncovalent interactions that are frequently being exploited for crystal engineering. Recently, similar bonding mechanisms have been proposed for adjacent main-group elements, and noncovalent "chalcogen bonds" and "pnictogen bonds" have been identified in crystal structures. A fundamental question, largely unresolved thus far, is how XBs and related contacts interact with each other in crystals; similar to hydrogen bonding, one might expect "cooperativity" (bonds amplifying each other), but evidence has been sparse. Here, we explore the crucial step from gas-

Cationic ascorbate peroxidase isoenzyme II from tea: structural insights into the heme pocket of a unique hybrid peroxidase.

The novel class III ascorbate peroxidase isoenzyme II from tea leaves (TcAPXII), with an unusually high specific ascorbate peroxidase activity associated with stress response, has been characterized by resonance Raman (RR), electronic absorption, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. Ferric and ferrous forms and the complexes with fluoride, cyanide, and CO have been studied at various pH values. The overall blue shift of the electronic absorption spectrum, the high RR frequencies of the core size marker bands, similar to those of 6-coordinate low-spin heme, and the complex RR

Quantum deep reinforcement learning for clinical decision support in oncology: application to adaptive radiotherapy.

Subtle differences in a patient's genetics and physiology may alter radiotherapy (RT) treatment responses, motivating the need for a more personalized treatment plan. Accordingly, we have developed a novel quantum deep reinforcement learning (qDRL) framework for clinical decision support that can estimate an individual patient's dose response mid-treatment and recommend an optimal dose adjustment. Our framework considers patients' specific information including biological, physical, genetic, clinical, and dosimetric factors. Recognizing that physicians must make decisions amidst uncertainty in

Phenylazoindole dyes--part I: the syntheses, characterizations, crystal structures, quantum chemical calculations and antimicrobial properties.

In this study, the synthesis of four new phenylazo indole dyes (dye 1-4) were carried out by diazotization of 4-aminoacetophenone and coupling with various 2- and 1,2-disubstituted indole derivatives. The dyes were characterized by UV-vis, FT-IR, (1)H NMR, HRMS and X-ray single crystal diffraction methods. Azo-hydrazone tautomeric bahavior of the dyes in different solvents (DMSO, methanol, acetic acid and chloroform) was investigated by using (1)H NMR and UV-vis results. The experimental results were compared with the corresponding calculated values. The results of experimental data and theore

Controlled propagation of soliton bullets in an engineered strain field.

Predicting and controlling the propagation of nonlinear responses in materials is critical to a range of fields, from the manipulation of single electrons in quantum optics to the understanding of crack propagation and failure of quasi-brittle materials. Solitons, which are highly localized strain patterns that propagate and persist due to nonlinear feedback mechanisms, can be produced in liquid crystal (LC) films under high-frequency AC electric fields. In previous work using uniformly oriented films of LC, soliton bullets propagated in one preset direction perpendicular to the far-field orie

Vibrational spectra of the radiation-induced cationic species resulting from phosphine monomers and dimers: A matrix isolation and CCSD(T) study.

Phosphine (PH3) is the simplest phosphorus compound detected in the extrasolar and planetary environments, where it can be subjected to ionizing radiation. In this study, we first report the vibrational spectra of the ionized molecules resulting from phosphine monomer and dimer in solid noble gas matrices upon X-ray irradiation. The assignment was based on the comparative studies using electron paramagnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, complemented by the quantum-chemical calculations at the valence-correlated spin unrestricted coupled cluster single-double and pertur

Learning Molecular Conformational Energies Using Semilocal Density Fingerprints.

We present a general theoretical framework for transforming the information contained in semilocal descriptors of the electron density (i.e., ρ(r) and ∇ρ(r))─the quantum mechanical objects at the very heart of density functional theory (DFT)─into feature vectors that can be used for machine learning (ML). As a proof of principle, we consider the task of learning molecular conformational energies and introduce the semilocal density fingerprint (SLDF) descriptor, which transforms the most energetically relevant information in ρ(r) into compact fixed-size feature vectors that are invariant to tra

Generation of dynamic oxygen vacancies in graphene quantum dots/NaNbO3 heterojunction for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

The design and theoretical study of green, low-cost heterojunction photocatalysts with strong interfacial interactions are crucial for achieving efficient and stable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). This study proposes a simple method to synthesizing graphene quantum dots (GQDs)/NaNbO3 heterojunction with dynamic oxygen vacancies. GQDs promote the formation of oxygen vacancies and increase the surface-active sites of NaNbO3, significantly enhancing light absorption efficiency. This results in superior separation of photogenerated charge carriers in the GQDs/NaNbO3 composite and improve

Extensive reference set and refined computational protocol for calculations of 57Fe Mössbauer parameters.

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing the local electronic structure of iron compounds, because it reports in an element-selective manner on both the oxidation state and coordination environment of the Fe ion. Computational prediction of the two main Mössbauer parameters, isomer shift (δ) and quadrupole splitting (ΔEQ), has long been targeted by quantum chemical studies, and useful protocols based on density functional theory have been proposed. Here we present an extensive curated reference set of Fe compounds that is considerably larger and more diverse than literature p
