Deep learning algorithm enables automated Cobb angle measurements with high accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of automatic Cobb angle measurements by deep learning (DL) on full spine radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full spine radiographs of patients aged > 2 years were screened using the radiology reports to identify radiographs for performing Cobb angle measurements. Two senior musculoskeletal radiologists and one senior orthopedic surgeon independently annotated Cobb angles exceeding 7° indicating the angle location as either proximal thoracic (apices between T3 and T5), main thoracic (apices between T6 and T11), or thoraco-lumbar (apices between T12 and L4)

Prevalence of abnormal cases in an image bank affects the learning of radiograph interpretation.

OBJECTIVES: Using a large image bank, we systematically examined how the use of different ratios of abnormal to normal cases affects trainee learning. METHODS: This was a prospective, double-blind, randomised, three-arm education trial conducted in six academic training programmes for emergency medicine and paediatric residents in post-licensure years 2-5. We developed a paediatric ankle trauma radiograph case bank. From this bank, we constructed three different 50-case training sets, which varied in their proportions of abnormal cases (30%, 50%, 70%). Levels of difficulty and diagnoses were

Growth patterns of abdominal atherosclerotic calcified deposits from lumbar lateral X-rays.

The aim of this study is to investigate new methods for describing the progression of atherosclerosis based on novel information of the growth patterns of individual abdominal aortic calcifications (AACs) over time. Lateral X-ray images were used due to their low cost, fast examination time, and wide-spread use, which facilitates a large statistical model (n > 100) based on longitudinal data. The examined cohort consisted of 103 post-menopausal women aged 62.4 years (± 7.0 years) with an average number of AACs of (4.7 ± 8.0) at baseline. The subjects had X-ray images taken in 1992-1993 (baseli

A pilot case-control study on the alveolar bone density measurement in risk assessment for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

UNLABELLED: Alveolar bone mineral density (BMD) measured by radiography standardized by aluminum step wedge pasted on the film and digitized by a computer system was significantly higher around osteonecrosis lesions than in control cases in a pilot case-control study. High alveolar bone density appears useful as a local risk factor for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). INTRODUCTION: In an attempt to find a reliable test method predicting the occurrence of BRONJ in addition to various risk factors suggested, an increase of alveolar bone density near the necrotic lesions

Flat panel catheter angiotomography of the spinal venous system: an enhanced venous phase for spinal digital subtraction angiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While spinal DSA remains the reference standard technique for spinovascular imaging, visualizing spinal veins remains challenging due to their small size and motion artifacts. This study evaluates the ability of FPCA to overcome these obstacles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three FPCAs, performed by intersegmental artery injections in 57 patients, were prospectively evaluated. Entrance skin doses were compared with standard spinal DSA runs, including a venous phase and cerebral FPCAs. FPCA contributions were stratified as 1) provided no added information, 2) complement

Three-dimensional CT texture analysis of anatomic liver segments can differentiate between low-grade and high-grade fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: CT texture analysis (CTTA) has been successfully used to assess tissue heterogeneity in multiple diseases. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the value of three-dimensional CTTA in the evaluation of diffuse liver disease. We aimed to develop CTTA based prediction models, which can be used for staging of fibrosis in different anatomic liver segments irrespective of variations in scanning parameters. METHODS: We retrospectively collected CT scans of thirty-two chronic hepatitis patients with liver fibrosis. The CT examinations were performed on either a 16- or a 64-slice sca

Which Two-dimensional Radiographic Measurements of Cam Femoroacetabular Impingement Best Describe the Three-dimensional Shape of the Proximal Femur?

BACKGROUND: Many two-dimensional (2-D) radiographic views are used to help diagnose cam femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), but there is little consensus as to which view or combination of views is most effective at visualizing the magnitude and extent of the cam lesion (ie, severity). Previous studies have used a single image from a sequence of CT or MR images to serve as a reference standard with which to evaluate the ability of 2-D radiographic views and associated measurements to describe the severity of the cam lesion. However, single images from CT or MRI data may fail to capture the ape

Progress in machine learning-assisted medical imaging for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis diagnosis: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) and osteoporosis (OP) are prevalent musculoskeletal disorders with substantial global health and economic burdens. Imaging is central to their diagnosis and monitoring, yet manual interpretation is vulnerable to inter-reader variability and workload-related fatigue. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), provides data-driven approaches to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and objectivity of image interpretation. This review summarizes AI-assisted imaging advances for OA and OP over the past decade and

Orthodontic intrusion of periodontally-compromised maxillary incisors: 3-dimensional finite element method analysis.

BACKGROUND: Loading of the compromised periodontium with orthodontic forces produces different results than those achieved in patients with healthy periodontal support. Determining the force value at a level preventing further deterioration of the patient's periodontal status, thus delivering the most precisely individualized "dose" of loading, seems to be crucial for the successful intrusion of teeth with reduced periodontal support. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the range of force values efficiently intruding maxillary incisors without further compromising the initially-

True four-dimensional analysis of thoracic aortic displacement and distension using model-based segmentation of computed tomography angiography.

Previous analyses of aortic displacement and distension using computed tomography angiography (CTA) were performed on double-oblique multi-planar reformations and did not consider through-plane motion. The aim of this study was to overcome this limitation by using a novel computational approach for the assessment of thoracic aortic displacement and distension in their true four-dimensional extent. Vessel segmentation with landmark tracking was executed on CTA of 24 patients without evidence of aortic disease. Distension magnitudes and maximum displacement vectors (MDV) including their directio

Overview of digital breast tomosynthesis: Clinical cases, benefits and disadvantages.

In France, the national breast cancer-screening program is based on mammography combined with clinical breast examination, and sometimes breast ultrasound for patients with high breast density. Digital breast tomosynthesis is a currently assessed 3D imaging technique in which angular projections of the stationary compressed breast are acquired automatically. When combined with mammography, clinicians can review both conventional (2D) as well as three-dimensional (3D) data. The purpose of this article is to review recent reports on this new breast imaging technique and complements this informat
