The role of cervical and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in the follow-up of vestibular neuritis.

This study evaluates the recovery of vestibular nerve function after vestibular neuritis (VN) by vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). Twenty-six patients with the diagnosis of VN were included. All patients underwent ocular VEMP (oVEMP) and cervical VEMP (cVEMP) recordings, at 6 days and 6 months from the onset of the symptoms. Of the 26 patients, 14 showed improvement on oVEMP at month 6 (group 1), and 12 showed no change or worsening on oVEMP at 6 months (group 2). At the same time, there was no change in the amplitudes of the cVEMP on either healthy or affected sides in both group

Stance performance under different sensorimotor conditions in patients with post-traumatic otolith disorders.

Dynamic posturography with the Equitest system is helpful to screen patients for balance deficits, but diagnostic specificity, for otolith disorders is unknown until now. It was therefore the aim of our present paper to examine patients with a well-defined otolith disorder on the Equitest at different test conditions while simultaneously recording trunk sway by means of the Sway Star system. A total of 22 patients with different types of otolith disorders were included in this study. All test results of the patients were matched with respect to age and gender to controls without history of ENT

Oculomotor Abnormalities in a Sheep (Ovis aries) Model of Huntington's Disease: Towards a Biomarker for Assessing Therapeutic Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by a loss of control of motor function that causes the presence of abnormal eye movements at early stages. OBJECTIVE: To determine if, compared to normal sheep, HD sheep have abnormal eye movements. METHODS: We measured eye movements in a transgenic sheep (Ovis aries) model of HD using a purpose-built, head-mounted sheep oculometer. This allows us to measure saccades without the need for either behavioral training or head fixation. At the age of testing (6 years old), the HD sheep were pre-manifest. We used 21 sheep (11 HD, 10 normal).

The repeatability of oVEMP in response to low-frequency vibration against the vertex and forehead.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (oVEMP) is a novel method for investigating vestibular function. Stimulus and recording techniques vary in the literature. A standardized test procedure is desirable in order to ensure repeatable results. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the magnitude and repeatability of the asymmetry ratio (AR) of oVEMPs in response to low-frequency bone conducted vibration (BCV) applied to the forehead and vertex in a healthy population. METHODS: 20 healthy subjects were tested three times by stimulating with 125 Hz BCV at the forehead a

Vestibular Hypofunction in ARSACS Syndrome: A Possible Pitfall in the Differential Diagnosis of Recessive Cerebellar and Afferent Ataxias.

OBJECTIVES: Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) is an early-onset ataxia characterized by cerebellar dysfunction, spasticity, and sensory-motor polyneuropathy due to variations in the SACS gene (13q11). To date, no studies have instrumentally assessed vestibular function in this condition. METHODS: We report a 36-year-old woman with diagnosis of ARSACS syndrome due to homozygous mutation (c.12232 C>T, p.Arg4078Ter) in the SACS gene. Neurologic examination showed spastic-ataxic gait, dysarthric speech, 4-limb ataxia, and spastic hypertonia with lower limb hyperre

Evidence of a medial olivocochlear involvement in contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions in humans.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) evoked by click stimuli were recorded in both ears of 20 normal human subjects, in the presence and absence of a contralateral masking broad band noise. No difference in the amplitude of OAE suppression was noted between the first tested ear and the second one. In addition, 20 pathological subjects were tested according to the same protocol. Ten of them belonged to a group of patients whose vestibular nerve was sectioned on one side to relieve incapacitating vertigo and thus represented a group in whom olivocochlear efferents were severed. A great reduction of supp
