Vision-Related Quality of Life After Fyodorov-Zuev Keratoprosthesis in China.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL) and its determinants in patients with implanted Fyodorov-Zuev (MICOF) KPro. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with bilateral corneal blindness who underwent unilateral Fyodorov-Zuev (MICOF) KPro implantation were included in this cross-sectional study. VR-QoL was assessed using the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25). Univariate analyses and multivariate linear regression were used to identify VR-QoL determinants. RESULTS: Eighty-eight patients, aged 50.00 ± 13.72 years, wit

The use of a modified full-thickness graft flap following Boston type I keratoprosthesis implantation in patients with advanced corneal melting.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a modified full-thickness corneal graft technique as a remedial strategy for advanced corneal melting following Boston type I keratoprosthesis (KPro) implantation. METHODS: Eleven patients with significant corneal melting and >180° KPro exposure underwent corrective surgery. A donor graft, matching the primary transplant diameter and with a 3-mm central aperture, was thinned circumferentially and positioned beneath the KPro optical cylinder after debridement of necrotic tissue. RESULTS: Over 6-12 months of follow-up, globe integrity was preserved in all cases. Two patien

Recurrent retroprosthetic membranes in Boston Keratoprosthesis Type I: Incidence, risk factors, and complications.

PURPOSE: To identify pre-operative surgical factors associated with recurrent retroprosthetic membranes (RPMs) after Boston Keratoprosthesis (KPro) implantation, and to compare outcomes of patients with recurrent RPMs to those who had single or no RPM formation. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study of all patients who underwent Boston Type I KPro implantation between 2006 and 2017 was performed. Patients with less than 1 year follow-up after device implantation were excluded. Patients were divided into 3 groups - no RPM, single RPM, and recurrent RPM. Recurrent RPM was defined as ≥2

Visual, clinical and quality of life outcomes of a new multifocal IOL with optimized diffractive grating: a non-randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are designed to reduce dependence on spectacles by providing multiple focal points. However, they are associated with photic phenomena such as halos and glare, and may reduce contrast sensitivity. The BIOS Trifocal is a single-piece acrylic diffractive IOL with a closed-loop haptic design, optimized for centration and stability. It features an aspheric, aberration-neutral surface and a precisely engineered diffraction grating for effective energy distribution across multiple distances. This study aims to evaluate the visual, clinical, and qualit

Short term clinical outcomes of the combined eyeWatch™ implant and eyePlate in refractory glaucoma-a United Kingdom dual centre study.

PURPOSE: The eyeWatch™ implant is a novel glaucoma drainage device allowing for a titratable aqueous humour outflow via an external magnetic control unit, facilitating a more controlled reduction in intraocular pressure. We report on 12 month outcomes evaluating the safety and efficacy of eyeWatch™ implant combined with an eyePlate (eyeWatch™ system) in refractory glaucoma. METHODS: Prospective study including patients aged 18 years or older with refractory primary open angle, pigmentary or pseudoexfoliative glaucomas with elevated intraocular pressures > 20 mmHg and previous failed filtratio

Surgically induced astigmatism in the scleral fixated 'Carlevale' IOL technique.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the surgically induced astigmatism over a 6-month follow-up period in patients who underwent scleral IOL fixation using an acrylic single-piece IOL with special haptics designed for sutureless scleral fixation. METHODS: We conducted a prospective longitudinal study at a single site with a single surgeon. We included patients who received transscleral IOL implantation following the Carlevale technique and were followed up post-operatively for 24 weeks. We measured the patient's refraction at baseline, week 12 and week 24 using the best corrected visual acuity at 4 m (EDTRS

Visual Outcomes After Cataract Surgery With the Light Adjustable Lens in Japanese Patients With and Without Prior Corneal Refractive Surgery.

PURPOSE: To describe Light Adjustable Lens (RxSight, Inc) (LAL) visual and refractive outcomes in a Japanese patient population with and without prior refractive surgery. METHODS: In this retrospective chart review of patients with cataract in a private eye clinic, 34 eyes from 21 patients underwent cataract surgery with LAL implantation. Eyes underwent light treatment to adjust the patients' refraction after implantation to meet individual visual goals. Standard visual and refractive outcomes were collected. Z-suture scleral fixation intraocular lenses: A refractive and safety report.

PURPOSE: Scleral fixation of intraocular lenses constitutes a surgical option in cases where there is inadequate capsular support or zonular insufficiency. Knotless techniques, such as the z-suture technique, avoid suture-related complications, such as conjunctival erosion or exposure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the visual outcomes and postoperative complications of patients who underwent scleral z-suture fixation of the Akreos AO® intraocular lenses. METHODS: A retrospective, observational study was conducted, including 22 eyes of 20 patients who underwent Akreos AO® intraocul

Medium-term visual and refractive outcomes in patients with pseudoexfoliation implanted with a toric or multifocal intraocular lens.

PURPOSE: To report medium-term visual acuity and refractive outcomes of patients with pseudoexfoliation implanted with toric or multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with pseudoexfoliation who had undergone phacoemulsification between 2016 and 2020 with at least 24 months follow-up. RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 44.17 ± 14.95 months. Toric IOLs were implanted in 48 eyes: mean uncorrected LogMAR visual acuity one month after surgery was 0.03 ± 0.09, decreasing to 0.08 ± 0.11 at the last visit (p = .01). Mean refractive cylinder was -0.12 ± 0.36 diop

Evaluation of posterior capsule opacification of the Alcon Clareon IOL vs the Alcon Acrysof IOL using a human capsular bag model.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery is influenced by intraocular lens (IOL) design and material. The following is an ex vivo comparison of PCO between the Clareon vs. the AcrySof IOL in human capsular bags. METHODS: Twenty cadaver capsular bags from 10 human donors were used, with the novel hydrophobic IOL (Clareon, CNA0T0) being implanted in one eye and the other eye of the same donor receiving the AcrySof IOL (SN60WF) following phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Five capsular bags of 3 donors served as controls without IOL. Cellular growth of lens epi
