ABO mismatch may affect engraftment in multiple myeloma patients receiving nonmyeloablative conditioning.

BACKGROUND: Blood group incompatibility does not appear to affect the overall outcome in patients undergoing myeloablative conditioning before allogeneic BMT. Data on ABO-mismatched transplantation in the nonmyeloablative setting are limited. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the effects of ABO mismatches in multiple myeloma patients who received a nonmyeloablative conditioning regimen was conducted. RESULTS: Three of 27 patients received a minor ABO-mismatched graft, all with evidence of hemolysis before converting to donor ABO group on Days 10, 15, and 6. Six patients r

Development of anti-D in a severe delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction due to DAU3, a partial D variant allele.

BACKGROUND: The Rh blood group system, of which RHD is the most notable, is one of the most clinically important red blood cell antigen groups next to ABO. STUDY DESIGN AND METHOD: In this case report, we describe a severe delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction caused by allo-anti-D in a patient with Sickle Beta Zero Thalassemia initially typed O RHD positive via standard serologic type and screen. RESULTS: Further serologic testing revealed the development of an allo-anti-D, suggestive of a partial D phenotype. The patient was confirmed to carry the DAU3 allele using confirmatory molecular

A retrospective study on the association between ABO blood group and the severity and prognosis of hospitalized Chinese patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has led to a severe public health crisis worldwide, significantly impacting human lives and health. The clinical manifestations and severity of COVID-19 vary among individuals, influenced by factors such as lifestyle, underlying health conditions, and genetic predispositions. Among these factors, blood type has garnered considerable attention as a potential biological marker that may affect both the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease severity. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed hospitalized COVID-19 patients at Fujian

Genetic diversity and prevalence of Blastocystis subtypes in Alborz Province, Iran: A molecular epidemiological study.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of Blastocystis. Additionally, it aimed to explore, for the first time in Iran, the potential association between Blastocystis infection and ABO blood groups. Another focus was to examine the relationship between Blastocystis subtypes and blood groups, an often overlooked risk factor, within the population of Alborz Province, Iran. 450 stool samples were collected from diagnostic facilities across Alborz Province between June 2022 and April 2024. The presence of Blastocystis was confirmed in 64 out of 450 samples (14.22

Thrombophilic risk factors and ABO blood group profile for arteriovenous access failure in end stage kidney disease patients: a single-center experience.

INTRODUCTION: Thrombosis of fistula occurs most frequently in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients receiving hemodialysis. However, the role of thrombophilia in arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure has not been well established. Hence, this study was aimed at assessing the roles of hereditary and acquired thrombophilic factors in association with AVF failure among patients with ESKD undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 ESKD patients, of whom 50 patients with well-functioning AVFs with no fistula failures earlier were enrolled as Group 1, and 50 pat

Transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy and immune haematological complications following intestine-containing organ transplantation: experience from over 100 consecutive cases.

Descriptions of passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS), immune cytopenias and transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) after intestine-containing transplants remain scarce. We describe our centre's experience of these complications from 2007 to 2019. Ninety-six patients received 103 transplants. PLS occurred in 9 (9%) patients (median 12 days post-transplant); all due to ABO antibodies. There were 31 minor ABO mismatch transplants. No patient required change in immunosuppression. Immune cytopenias (excluding PLS) occurred in six patients at an incidence of 1·7/100 patient years;

Non-O blood groups can be a prognostic marker of in-hospital and long-term major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested ABO blood type locus as an inherited predictor of thrombosis, cardiovascular risk factors, myocardial infarction. However, data is scarce about the impact of non-O blood groups on prognosis in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic importance of non-O blood groups in patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) METHODS: 1835 consecutive patients who were admitted with acute STEMI between 2010 and 2015 were included and followed-up for a median of 35.6m

Mortality and cancer in relation to ABO blood group phenotypes in the Golestan Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: A few studies have shown an association between blood group alleles and vascular disease, including atherosclerosis, which is thought to be due to the higher level of von Willebrand factor in these individuals and the association of blood group locus variants with plasma lipid levels. No large population-based study has explored this association with overall and cause-specific mortality. METHODS: We aimed to study the association between ABO blood groups and overall and cause-specific mortality in the Golestan Cohort Study. In this cohort, 50,045 people 40- to 70-years old were re

Effect of red blood cell variants on childhood malaria in Mali: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Red blood cell variants protect African children from severe falciparum malaria. However, their individual and interactive effects on mild disease and parasite density, and their modification by age-dependent immunity, are poorly understood. In this study, we address these knowledge gaps in a prospective cohort study of malaria risk and Plasmodium falciparum densities in Malian children. METHODS: The Kenieroba Innate Defense Study for Malaria (KIDS-Malaria) was a 4-year prospective cohort study of children aged 6 months to 17 years undertaken in Mali between 2008 and 2011. Red blo

Impact of PSCA variation on gastric ulcer susceptibility.

Peptic ulcer is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders with complex etiology. Recently we conducted the genome wide association study for duodenal ulcer and identified disease susceptibility variations at two genetic loci corresponding to the Prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA) gene and the ABO blood group (ABO) gene. Here we investigated the association of these variations with gastric ulcer in two Japanese case-control sample sets, a total of 4,291 gastric ulcer cases and 22,665 controls. As a result, a C-allele of rs2294008 at PSCA increased the risk of gastric ulcer with odds rati

A unique feature of iron loss via close adhesion of Helicobacter pylori to host erythrocytes.

Iron deficiency anemia is an extra-stomach disease experienced in H. pylori carriers. Individuals with type A blood are more prone to suffering from H. pylori infection than other individuals. To clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying H. pylori-associated anemia, we collected erythrocytes from A, B, O, and AB blood donors and analyzed morphology, the number of erythrocytes with H. pylori colonies attached to them, and iron contents in erythrocytes and H. pylori (NCTC11637 and SS1 strains) by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and synchrotron radiation soft X-ray im

ABO blood type is associated with endometrial cancer risk in Chinese women.

ABO blood type has been associated with risk of several malignancies. However, results are not consistent. In this population-based case-control study including 1204 incident endometrial cancer cases and 1212 population controls, we examined the association of self-reported serologic blood type with endometrial cancer risk using a logistic regression model. Women with endometrial cancer were more likely to have blood type A. Compared to women with blood type O, the adjusted odds ratios for endometrial cancer were 1.00 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.79-1.28] for type B, 1.24 (95% CI, 0.90-1.6

von Willebrand factor variant p.Arg924Gln marks an allele associated with reduced von Willebrand factor and factor VIII levels.

BACKGROUND: von Willebrand factor (VWF) variant c.2771G>A; p.R924Q has been described as a benign polymorphism or a possible marker for a null allele and been associated with mild bleeding phenotypes. It was identified in several patients in recent type 1 von Willebrand disease (VWD) studies. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the p.R924Q allele contributes to reduced VWF levels and type 1 VWD. METHODS: One thousand one hundred and fifteen healthy controls and 148 index cases from the MCMDM-1VWD study were genotyped for c.2771G>A; VWF and FVIII levels were analyzed in ABO blood group stratifie

Is there an association between blood group O and epistaxis?

INTRODUCTION: Blood group O is associated with lower expression of von Willebrand factor suggesting a relative bleeding tendency. A lower admission rate for epistaxis among Asians compared with Caucasians has also been noted, with one explanation being higher prevalence of blood group O among Caucasians. This study investigates whether blood group O is over-represented in patients admitted with epistaxis. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted, using computerised hospital in-patient and blood bank databases to identify Caucasians admitted with epistaxis between January 2000 and December

Genetic linkage and association analysis in type 1 von Willebrand disease: results from the Canadian type 1 VWD study.

BACKGROUND: von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common bleeding disorder known in humans, with type 1 VWD representing the majority of cases. Unlike the other variant forms of VWD, type 1 disease represents a complex genetic trait, influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. AIM: To evaluate the contribution of the von Willebrand factor (VWF) and ABO blood group loci to the type 1 VWD phenotype, and to assess the potential for locus heterogeneity in this condition, we have performed genetic linkage and association studies on a large, unselected type 1 VWD population. METHOD: W

Insights into von Willebrand factor proteolysis: clinical implications.

The proteolysis of von Willebrand factor (VWF) by the recently discovered metalloprotease ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin repeats), is a normal processing step in VWF biochemistry. Emerging data indicate that this step may be influenced by a variety of factors, some of which favour increased proteolysis and some of which compromise proteolysis. The former may predispose to bleeding, whilst the latter appears to be the underlying mechanism for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). The new insights support the concept of "risk" in bleeding, particularly in th

Genetic analysis of 31 Swedish type 1 von Willebrand disease families reveals incomplete linkage to the von Willebrand factor gene and a high frequency of a certain disease haplotype.

BACKGROUND: The most common type of von Willebrand disease (VWD), type 1, has in only a few cases been explained by an identified causative mutation in the von Willebrand factor (VWF) gene. The ABO blood group and other modifier loci outside the VWF gene may contribute to the development of type 1 VWD. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Our aim was to determine whether there was genetic linkage to the VWF gene in 31 Swedish type 1 VWD families. Stringent diagnostic criteria in accordance with ISTH guidelines were used. Genetic linkage was investigated by using two highly informative dinucleotide microsa

Histochemical analysis of the chemical structure of blood group-related carbohydrate chains in serous cells of human submandibular glands using lectin staining and glycosidase digestion.

Using lectin staining methods in combination with exo- and endo-glycosidase digestion procedures, we analyzed the chemical structure of different types of blood group-related substances in serous cells of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human submandibular glands. Serous cells produced only H antigen; A and B antigens were not present, and the expression of H antigen is dependent on the secretor status of the tissue donor. Although reactivity with Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (UEA-I) was not markedly reduced by alpha-L-fucosidase digestion, an affinity for peanut agglutinin (PNA) was seen aft
