pH-Responsive double-network Janus hydrogel incorporates tannic acid-iron nanoparticles for chronic wound healing and monitoring.

Polyacrylic acid-based composites hold substantial promise for intelligent wound dressing applications, owing to their intrinsic hydrophilicity and pH responsiveness. Nevertheless, their clinical translation is hindered by insufficient mechanical properties and excessive adhesion, which are directly induced by high hydrophilicity. Herein, a dual-network Janus hydrogel based on polyacrylic acid (PAA) and sodium alginate (SA), denoted as tannic acid-iron nanoparticles@polyacrylic acid/sodium alginate (TA-Fe NPs@PS Janus), was rationally fabricated. This hydrogel incorporates self-assembled TA-Fe

Systemic lupus erythematosus-related macrophage activation syndrome inducing severe cytopenia successfully treated with anifrolumab: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metal pollution from industrial operations poses severe environmental risks due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation. Conventional chemical and physical remediation methods are costly and generate secondary toxic sludge. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the potential of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) producing bacteria as a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative for bioremediation. METHODS: EPS producing bacteria were isolated from chemical factory effluent sludge and screened on modified Winogradsky's medium. The isolates were identified by 16S rRNA gene seq

[Biologically active agents of potential trade brown seaweed of the Far East Region].

The content of biologically active substances of various classes in potentially trade brown seaweed of the Far East region of Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida has been defined. It has been found that the studied brown seaweed of C. costata and U. pinnatifida have lower content of alginic acid, than Laminaria japonica (24.5-27.2% against 38.1%), but rather high to consider them as perspective potential sources for industrial production of alginic acid and alginates. The content of polysaccharides in U. pinnatifida (4.89±0.22%) 8 fold exceeded the level in C. costata that speaks about hi…

Immunoisolation to prevent tissue graft rejection: Current knowledge and future use.

This review focuses on the concept of immunoisolation and how this method has evolved over the last few decades. The concept of immunoisolation came out of the need to protect allogeneic transplant tissue from the host immune system and avoid systemic side effects of immunosuppression. The latter remains a significant hurdle in clinical translation of using tissue transplants for restoring endocrine function in diabetes, growth hormone deficiency, and other conditions. Herein, we review the most significant works studying the use of hydrogels, specifically alginate and poly (ethylene glycol),

Allotransplant of microencapsulated parathyroid tissue in severe postsurgical hypoparathyroidism: a case report.

The last therapeutic alternative in severe postsurgical hypoparathyroidism is allotransplantation of microencapsulated parathyroid cells. With this technique, it is possible to implant cells or tissue of parathyroid origin to replace them in such patients, without immusupression. We report an allotransplant of parathyroid tissue in a patient with continous endovenous requirement of calcium to survive. The microencapsulation was carried out with a commercial sodium alginate. We implant 23 microspheres in the nondominant forearm and 40 microspheres in the leg in a second attempt. In this article

How do we offer clinical relief to patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease?

In gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), the majority of patients are endoscopy negative. However, symptoms can affect the quality of li … e that many patients do not seek medical help and are satisfied with self-medication (with antacids/alginates or even over-the-counter H2RAs). On the other hand, some clinicians prefer a full resolution of symptom strategy because this is now achievable with modern PPIs without serious concerns in terms of tolerance and safety. Indeed, quality of life is ra …

The knee joint loose body as a source of viable autologous human chondrocytes.

Loose bodies are fragments of cartilage or bone present in the synovial fluid. In the present study we assessed if loose bodies could be used as a source of autologous human chondrocytes for experimental purposes. Histochemical examination of loose bodies and differential enzymatic digestions were undertaken, the isolated cells were cultured in alginate bead microspheres and immunolocalisations were undertaken for chondrogenic markers such as aggrecan, and type II collagen. Isolated loose body cells had high viability (≥90% viable), expressed chondrogenic markers (aggrecan, type II collagen) b

A modified occlusal splint to avoid tracheotomy for total midface osteotomies.

A modified occlusal splint is described which may be used to avoid tracheostomy when a total midface osteotomy is required. We demonstrate the accuracy of the modified splint by using the technique in a control subject who underwent alginate impressions, dental casts, and a face-bow transfer. A modified splint was constructed on the articulated dental models and was found to be accurate within the range of rotational movement of the temporomandibular joint. The technique is demonstrated in a patient with Crouzon's syndrome undergoing cranial vault reshaping and a monobloc (midface) advancement

[Antacids in combination with other anti-ulcer agents].

Antacids should not be combined with other anti-ulcer drugs such as carbenoxolone, metoclopramide, domperidone, sulpiride, di-citrato-bis-muthate and alginic acid. The effect of each single drug can be negatively influenced by combined application. H2-receptor-antagonists and sucralfate seem to be useful in combination with antacids. There is no evidence up to now that goals of therapy can be attained more effectively and in a shorter time than with either a drug alone. Before pirenzepine will be given in combination with antacids, bioavailability of the drug should be proved during antacid tr

Preparation, Characterization, and pH-Responsive Intestinal Release Properties of Gel Beads Encapsulating Sea Cucumber Mouthpart Peptides.

Sea cucumber mouthpart peptides (SCPs) are marine bioactive peptides with considerable application potential. However, their oral delivery remains challenging because of their poor stability and low intestinal bioavailability. To develop a delivery system for SCPs with gastric protection and pH-responsive intestinal sustained-release properties, double-layer gel beads (SCP-BMs) were fabricated through ionic gelation, with SCPs as the core material and sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan (CS) as the wall materials. The preparation conditions of the gel beads were optimized using single-factor exp
