Amelioration of diet-induced nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in rats by Mn-salen complexes via reduction of oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a progressive stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is characterized by steatosis (accumulation of triacylglycerols within hepatocytes) along with inflammation and ballooning degeneration. It has been suggested that oxidative stress may play an important role in the progress of NAFLD to NASH. The aim of present study was to determine whether antioxidant supplementations using EUK-8, EUK-134 and vitamin C could improve the biochemical and histological abnormalities associated with diet-induced NASH in rats. METHODS: NASH was induced

[Interactions of trace elements during their metabolism].

On the basis of the analysis of the literature data and results of own examinations the following conclusion is made: even practically healthy people can have deficiency of trace elements, and the change of trace elements proportion in a ration can influence essentially homeostasis of trace elements with subsequent damage to body functions. The basic cause of deficiency of trace elements in the body is unbalanced relation of various food components intensifying or inhibiting assimilation of trace elements, inadequate consumption of trace elements and their losses during vital activity.

[A comparative study of the effectiveness of iron preparations in the treatment of iron deficiency anemias in pregnant women].

Efficacies of ferroplex, conferon, and feramide in the treatment of pregnant patients with iron-deficiency anemia were compared. Ferroplex proved to be the most effective. Therapy with this drug brought about the best correction of iron metabolism parameters. Feramide was the least effective agent. The efficacy of iron preparations depends on the ionic form of this metal and the combination of iron with the agents conducive to its better absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

Glutamic oxalacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminase activities in different tissues of rats and guinea pigs exposed to varying levels of altitude stress for different periods of time.

It was observed that both glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities were significantly increased in different tissues of both rats and guinea pigs, during a short period of altitude exposure, as well as in acclimatized animals. Interestingly, it was found that oral administration of glucose showed no such significant change at either sea level or in a hypoxic condition. Studies on the activity of GOT and GPT in different tissues of normal guinea pigs showed a little change in liver and brain during short periods of exposure. Kidney and heart show

[Hypertrophic osteodystrophy of the dog (author's transl)].

The clinical and radiological findings of 21 dogs with hypertrophic osteodystrophy are described. In three cases a detailed pathologico-anatomic examination was performed also. The dogs concerned were young animals of large breeds with clinical symptoms of lameness, fever, pain, and thickened metaphyses of the long bones. Radiologically the condition was characterised by enhancement of the metaphyses and periosteal new growths of the bone. The pathologico-anatomic examination revealed a disturbed endochondral and periosteal ossification. Overnutrition as a possible cause of the condition is di

"Nutritional insurance" supplementation and corticosteroid toxicity.

Specialized "nutritional insurance" supplementation may reduce the risk of many important complications of long-term corticosteroid treatment. Supplementation with calcium, fluoride, activated vitamin D metabolites, and GTF, should help prevent osteoporosis. GTF, vitamin C, zinc and fluoride might help offset the inhibitory effect of corticosteroids on fibroblast and osteoblast function. Diabetic, hyperlipidemic and protein-losing effects might be compensated with supplementary GTF. Antioxidant nutrients could support humoral immunity and neutrophil function, while complementing the anti-infla

Comparison of plasma and leukocyte vitamin C status between asthmatic and healthy subjects.

In a case-control study the vitamin C status of 50 adults with chronic controlled asthma was compared with that of 50 randomly selected healthy controls. Vitamin C intake was assessed by 3-day dietary recall, and plasma and leukocyte vitamin C concentrations were measured colorimetrically. A positive significant correlation was found between plasma vitamin C and dietary vitamin C intake. Plasma and leukocyte vitamin C levels were significantly lower in the asthma group. Plasma vitamin C was deficient (< 0.4 mg/dL) in significantly more patients than controls (38.0% versus 0%) and leukocyte vit

Bone Degeneration and Its Recovery in SMP30/GNL-Knockout Mice.

Senescence marker protein-30 (SMP30) decreases androgen-independently with aging and is a lactone-hydrolyzing enzyme gluconolactonase (GNL) that is involved in vitamin C biosynthesis. In the present study, bone properties of SMP30/GNL knockout (KO) mice with deficiency in vitamin C synthesis were investigated to reveal the effects of SMP30/GNL and exogenous vitamin C supplementation on bone formation. Mineral content (BMC) and mineral density (BMD) of the mandible and femur of SMP30/GNL KO and wild-type mice at 2 and 3 months of age with or without vitamin C supplementation were measured by du

Vitamin C deficiency increases the lung pathology of influenza virus-infected gulo-/- mice.

This study was designed to determine the effects of vitamin C deficiency on the immune response to infection with influenza virus. l-Gulono-gamma-lactone oxidase gene-inactivated mice (gulo-/- mice) require vitamin C supplementation for survival. Five-wk-old male and female gulo-/- mice were provided water or water containing 1.67 mmol/L vitamin C for 3 wk before inoculation with influenza A/Bangkok/1/79. There were no differences in lung influenza virus titers between vitamin C-adequate and -deficient mice; however, lung pathology in the vitamin C-deficient mice was greater at 1 and 3 d after

Vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs differentially affects the expression of type IV collagen, laminin, and elastin in blood vessels.

Vitamin C deficiency causes morphologic changes in the endothelial and smooth muscle compartments of guinea pig blood vessels. Endothelial cells synthesize the basement membrane components, type IV collagen and laminin, and smooth muscle cells synthesize elastin in blood vessels. Therefore, we examined the possibility that vitamin C deficiency affects the expression of these proteins. Decreased expression of types I and II collagens in other tissues of vitamin C-deficient guinea pigs is associated with weight loss and the consequent induction of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins; thu
