Modeling extreme heat-induced neonatal mortality and inequities in relative vulnerabilities in Ghana: distributed lag panel analysis with counterfactual risk estimation; 2008-2025.

BACKGROUND: Climate change increasingly threatens maternal, neonatal, and child health, yet evidence on the effect of temperature extremes on neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa remains limited. This study quantified the association between maximum temperature and neonatal mortality and identified high-burden communities across 261 administrative districts in Ghana. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal district-level panel analysis using monthly health and climate data from 261 districts between 2008 and 2025. Extreme temperature effects on neonatal mortality were estimated with Poisson,

Long-read, high-coverage reference genome of the nymphalid butterfly Catonephele acontius (Nymphalidae: Biblidinae).

Catonephele acontius (Nymphalidae:Biblidinae:Epicalinii) is a butterfly species with a wide distribution across the Neotropics including the Amazon. Here, we present a long-read high-coverage reference genome for this species to serve as a genomic resource for future studies on Biblidinae butterflies, a group that is the subject of ongoing studies of seasonal adaptation under climate change. We used PacBio HiFi and IsoSeq reads to generate a highly contiguous and well-annotated reference genome. Five libraries were constructed, 4 using RNA from different tissues and 1 using high molecular weig

The patterns and drivers of Oropouche virus and its primary vector invasions in Asia under global change.

BACKGROUND: The 2024 Oropouche fever outbreak marks a major public health event, with documented fatalities and confirmed cases of vertical transmission. Given increasing global connectivity and environmental change, there is potential for the spread of Oropouche fever from its currently endemic regions into other regions like Asia. To prevent the spread of the disease, it is important to understand the potential ecological niche of Oropouche virus (OROV) and its primary vector, Culicoides paraensis, and to identify the major environmental drivers. METHODS: Georeferenced occurrence records of

Genetic susceptibility to heat identifies rare neurological diseases at particular risk from climate change impacts.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is one of the greatest contemporary challenges to human health, undermining human health through multiple mechanisms. Among relatively understudied mechanisms are those related to individual genomic variation. We aimed to examine this possibility. METHODS: Through a defined, agnostic literature review-based approach, we curated human genetic variants with functionally characterised temperature-dependent effects: we call these 'calortypic variants', some of which are linked to temperature-sensitive disease phenotypes. Next, we examined their occurrence in whole-genom

Machine learning analysis of Iran's wildfire landscape and anthropogenic influences.

Wildfires pose significant challenges globally, including in Iran. This study analyzes wildfire occurrences in Iran from 2001 to 2022, using NASA FIRMS' active fire detections MCD14DL data. To enhance the reliability of this satellite-based dataset, particularly in data-scarce regions like Iran, we applied a multi-sensor cross-validation framework before modeling. We also aim to examine the country's wildfire dynamics over two decades, employing k-means clustering to categorize wildfires into ten clusters, delineating fire zones. Two random forest regression models explore the relationships be

Comparative 30-day life cycle assessment of bladder drainage strategies.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the most environmentally sustainable urinary drainage strategies commonly used to manage bladder outlet obstruction and also to highlight actionable levers for reducing the footprint of urinary drainage in clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a comparative life cycle assessment of three urinary drainage strategies (i.e., indwelling urinary catheter, clean intermittent self-catheterisation [CISC], and temporary urethral stent) over a 30-day period, in accordance with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. Hantavirus is Associated With Open Developed Areas and Arid Climates, Highlighting Increased Risk in the Western United States.

In the United States, hantaviruses can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in humans, an acute respiratory illness with a high mortality rate. Most people contract HPS from exposure to infected rodent excrement. The interannual dynamics of hantavirus transmission are tied to both environmental and human-related factors, including changes in annual climate conditions, rodent populations, and the built environment in which humans are more likely to be exposed. Similar environmental conditions and socioeconomic factors also likely determine the long-term risk of hantavirus exposure. Here, w

Employing a GelMA/Decellularized ECM Biomaterial to Enhance In Vitro Modeling Approaches in Reproductive Biosciences.

Climate change poses a significant threat to global health, with pregnant women and their offspring being particularly vulnerable to heat stress. This rising concern has created an urgent need for advanced in vitro models to study how climate change-associated heat stress affects maternal and offspring health, focusing on how in utero heat stress impacts life course health. The tissue that mediates this maternal stress to the offspring is the endometrium - the innermost lining of the uterus and is comprised of a larger number of phenotypically diverse cells. This work develops a biomaterial-ba

Prenatal exposure to ambient air temperature and risk of early delivery.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a major determinant of adverse health consequences, and early term births are also associated with increased risk of various outcomes. In light of climate change, the effect of ambient temperature on earlier delivery is an important factor to consider. Several studies have focused on associations of ambient air temperature (Ta) on preterm birth, but few have examined associations with early term births. AIMS: To investigate the association of prenatal exposure to Ta with preterm birth (<37 completed gestation weeks) and with early-term birth (<39 completed gestati

Responses of coral reef fishes to past climate changes are related to life-history traits.

Coral reefs and their associated fauna are largely impacted by ongoing climate change. Unravelling species responses to past climatic variations might provide clues on the consequence of ongoing changes. Here, we tested the relationship between changes in sea surface temperature and sea levels during the Quaternary and present-day distributions of coral reef fish species. We investigated whether species-specific responses are associated with life-history traits. We collected a database of coral reef fish distribution together with life-history traits for the Indo-Pacific Ocean. We ran species

Cyclical konzo epidemics and climate variability.

Konzo epidemics have occurred during droughts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) for >70 years, but also in Mozambique, Tanzania, and the Central African Republic. The illness is attributed to exposure to cyanide from cassava foods, on which the population depends almost exclusively during droughts. Production of cassava, a drought-resistant crop, has been shown to correlate with cyclical changes in precipitation in konzo-affected countries. Here we review the epidemiology of konzo as well as models of its pathogenesis. A spectral analysis of precipitation and konzo is performed to

Recent advances in genetic engineering and chemical production in yeast species.

Yeasts have emerged as well-suited microbial cell factory for the sustainable production of biofuels, organic acids, terpenoids, and specialty chemicals. This ability is bolstered by advances in genetic engineering tools, including CRISPR-Cas systems and modular cloning in both conventional (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and non-conventional (Yarrowia lipolytica, Rhodotorula toruloides, Candida krusei) yeasts. Additionally, genome-scale metabolic models and machine learning approaches have accelerated efforts to create a broad range of compounds that help reduce dependency on fossil fuels, mitigat

Integrating habitat suitability, phytochemical quality, and landscape stability to identify conservation priorities for Arnebia guttata Bunge under climate change in East Asia.

Arnebia guttata Bunge is a threatened medicinal plant predominantly distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of China and Mongolia. Increasing medicinal demand and ongoing climate change highlight the need for an integrated evaluation of its habitat dynamics, medicinal quality, and ecological stability. In this study, we combined species distribution modeling, niche analysis, phytochemical evaluation, and landscape fragmentation analysis to assess habitat suitability, medicinal quality, and habitat stability within a unified framework. Results showed that the suitable habitats of A. guttata a

Enhanced carbon loss in the Southern Ocean under mitigation scenarios.

The Southern Ocean (SO) plays a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle by absorbing anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2). Yet, it remains uncertain whether this role will persist under future mitigation efforts. Using idealized emission-driven simulations with the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2), we find that the SO transitions from net CO2 sink to a substantial source during zero- and negative-emission phases. This outgassing stems from a persistent regional increase in sea surface temperature and a globally uniform decline in surface alkalinity. Together, these changes maintain

Pseudomonadaceae Promotes Tobacco Defense Against Pathogen Invasion via Root Exudate Reprogramming.

Microbial pathogens pose a serious challenge to food security under climate change. Microbiomes can filter out incoming pathogens. However, the specific microbial taxa and mechanisms that indicate the response of the microbiome and plant health to the invasion of pathogens remain largely unknown. Here, we combine multiple field surveys and experiments with DNA and RNA sequencing using tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum as the model system, and f ind that Pseudomonadaceae constitute an important root-associated component against pathogen invasions

Coupled Atlantic atmosphere-ocean variability modulates cutaneous leishmaniasis in North Africa, enabling long-lead seasonal forecasts.

Early warning systems for climate-driven diseases require predictors with sufficient lead time, a persistent challenge for many diseases and regions. While coupled atmosphere-ocean phenomena offer a potential solution, they remain largely underexploited in temperate zones. Here, we establish a multiscale connection between cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) dynamics in North Africa, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV). Beyond the NAO's influence on seasonal rainfall, we uncover low-frequency variability in the NAO-AMV system that modulates interannua

Forest Fragmentation and Warmer Climate Increase Tick-Borne Disease Infection.

Anthropogenic disturbances degrade ecosystems, elevating the risk of emerging infectious diseases from wildlife. However, the key environmental factors for preventing tick-borne disease infection in relation to host species, landscape components, and climate conditions remain unknown. This study focuses on identifying crucial environmental factors contributing to the outbreak of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), a tick-borne disease, in Miyazaki Prefecture, southern Japan. We collected data on SFTS case numbers, annual temperature and precipitation, species richness of large-

Using net-zero carbon debt to track climate overshoot responsibility.

Current emissions trends will likely deplete a 1.5 °C consistent carbon budget around the year 2030, resulting in at least a temporary exceedance, or overshoot. To clarify responsibilities for this budget exceedance, we consider "net-zero carbon debt," a forward-looking measure of the extent to which a party is expected to breach its "fair share" of the remaining budget by the time it achieves net-zero carbon emissions. We apply this measure to all vetted mitigation scenarios assessed in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Sixth Assessment Report and two scenarios that model curren
