Changes in frontal and posterior cortical activity underlie the early emergence of executive function.

Executive function (EF) is a key cognitive process that emerges in early childhood and facilitates children's ability to control their own behavior. Individual differences in EF skills early in life are predictive of quality-of-life outcomes 30 years later (Moffitt et al., 2011). What changes in the brain give rise to this critical cognitive ability? Traditionally, frontal cortex growth is thought to underlie changes in cognitive control (Bunge & Zelazo, 2006; Moriguchi & Hiraki, 2009). However, more recent data highlight the importance of long-range cortical interactions between frontal and p

The Potential Effects of Sensor-Based Virtual Reality Telerehabilitation on Lower Limb Function in Patients with Chronic Stroke Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Retrospective Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Individuals with chronic stroke often experience various impairments, including poor balance, reduced mobility, limited physical activity, and difficulty performing daily tasks. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, telerehabilitation (TR) can overcome the barriers of geographical and physical distancing, time, costs, and travel, as well as the anxiety about contracting COVID-19. In this retrospective case-control study, we aim to evaluate the motor and cognitive effects of balance TR training carried out with a sensor-based non-immersive virtual reality system compar

Experiences of physical strain during person transfer situations in dementia care units.

UNLABELLED: Caring for residents with dementia impose a higher challenge and workload on the nursing staff because of a higher degree of motor function and cognitive decline among the residents. Training in person transfer tasks for nursing staff has mostly been concentrated on ergonomics irrespective of the nature of the resident's functional decline. An increased knowledge about the nursing staffs' experiences of physical workload in dementia care and in how to reduce their physical strain is needed. AIM: The aim of the study was to describe nurse's aids' experiences of physical strain duri

Network-based performance analysis of multidimensional performance characteristics in trained male youth combat athletes.

Youth combat sport performance relies on a complex interplay of biological maturation, anthropometrics, neuromuscular capacity, and executive cognitive function. Despite this, these domains are typically studied in isolation. To bridge this gap, the present study applied a network-based performance analysis to uncover the multidimensional organization of these characteristics in trained male youth combat athletes. We evaluated biological maturation, anthropometry, neuromuscular performance and executive cognitive function in eighty-eight trained male athletes (13-16 years) from six combat spor

Timed Sequence Task: A New Paradigm to Study Motor Learning and Flexibility in Mice.

Motor learning and flexibility allow animals to perform routine actions efficiently while keeping them flexible. A number of paradigms are used to test cognitive flexibility, but not many of them focus specifically on the learning of complex motor sequences and their flexibility. While many tests use operant or touchscreen boxes that offer high throughput and reproducibility, the motor actions themselves are mostly simple presses of a designated lever. To focus more on motor actions during the operant task and to probe the flexibility of these well trained actions, we developed a new operant p

Aerobic physical exercise versus dual-task cognitive walking in cognitive rehabilitation of people with stroke: a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a neurological deficit caused by an acute focal injury to the central nervous system due to vascular injury that can result in loss of neurological function, lasting brain damage, long-term disability and, in some cases, death. The literature reports that aerobic physical exercise, as well as dual-task cognitive walking, are used for the cognitive recovery of people with stroke. We aimed to assess whether aerobic physical exercise influences post-stroke cognitive recovery, namely performance on selective and sustained attention. We tested the hypothesis that post-stroke

The effect of virtual reality-based balance training on motor learning and postural control in healthy adults: a randomized preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Adults with sedentary lifestyles seem to face a higher risk of falling in their later years. Several causes, such as impairment of strength, coordination, and cognitive function, influence worsening health conditions, including balancing ability. Many modalities can be applied to improve the balance function and prevent falling. Several studies have also recorded the effects of balance training in elderly adults for fall prevention. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to define the effect of virtual reality-based balance training on motor learning and postural control abilities i

Combining EEG-guided HD-tACS and Immersive Virtual Reality for Social Prediction Training in Congenital and Acquired Cerebellar Damage: A randomized sham-controlled trial protocol.

The cerebellum is increasingly recognized for its crucial role in high-level cognitive processes, particularly in the domain of social cognition and action prediction. Disruptions in cerebellar circuits can lead to significant impairments in anticipating others' intentions and behaviors, affecting daily social interactions. This randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial protocol investigates the combined effects of personalized cerebellar High-Definition transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (HD-tACS) and Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) training on social prediction abilities.
