Primary biliary cirrhosis is a disease of the small bile ducts with altered immunologic responsiveness often associated with various collagen diseases. All appear to be mediated by immune complex deposition. They probably are all different clinical manifestations of the same disease with different expressions determined by genetic and acquired factors. Therapy should be directed to the most immediate life-threatening problem.

The complement-dependent cytotoxic effects of measles virus specific antibodies on a chronically infected cell line were studied by a microcytotoxicity assay. Cell damage was determined by trypan blue staining. Monospecific antisera against the hemagglutinin (HA) and the hemolysin (HL) of the virus were both cytotoxic. Rabbits, immunized with measles virus, developed cytotoxic antibodies in parallel with the appearance of antibodies against the measles virus HA and HL. Human sera with high antibody titers against HA and HL also gave a specific cytotoxic reaction. The main part of the activity

An outbreak of brucellosis occurred in a group of 726 sand gazelles ( Gazella marica ) at the Prince Mohammed Al-Sudairi Gazelle Breeding Center and in a group of 47 putative "Neumann's gazelles" ( Gazella erlangeri ) housed at the King Khalid Wildlife Research Center in Saudi Arabia. Clinical signs of anorexia, poor body condition, enlarged testes, reluctance to walk, swollen carpal joints, and suppurative arthritis were present in 16 sand gazelles and 14 Neumann's gazelles. All clinical cases were evaluated using a card agglutination test, complement fixation, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent

A 31-months study was conducted to elucidate the prevalence of brucellosis in nomadic pastoralists and their goats in two provinces of the eastern Algerian high plateaus. Five hundred eight human and 4955 animal sera were screened with the Rose Bengal plate test and the complement fixation test for confirmation. Uterine fluids from aborting goats were subjected to microbiological analyses to determine the biovars responsible for abortions. The overall seroprevalence was 0.98% among animals and 15.84% among herds. A significant correlation was recorded between occurrence of brucellosis and herd

Procedurally similar competitive enzyme-linked immunoassay (cELISA) methods were developed for the serodiagnosis of Babesia equi and Babesia caballi (piroplasmosis), Trypanosoma equiperdum (dourine), and Burkholderia mallei (glanders) infections in horses. Apparent test specificities for the B. equi, B. caballi, T. equiperdum, and B. mallei cELISAs were 99.2%, 99.5%, 98.9%, and 98.9%, respectively. Concordances and kappa values between the complement fixation (CF) and the cELISA procedures for the serodiagnosis of B. equi, B. caballi, T. equiperdum, and B. mallei infections in experimentally e

Pregnant ewes were infected in midpregnancy with three isolates of Chlamydia pecorum derived from the feces of healthy lambs from three different farms. Oral infection, alone or together with Fasciola hepatica, did not result in tissue invasion, since all placental and fecal samples were negative for chlamydiae. Intravenous infection resulted in placental infection in 16 of 18 ewes in that chlamydiae were cultured from placentas or vaginal swabs. Two ewes bore dead lambs after a shortened gestation time. The chlamydiae isolated were all C. pecorum. There were no significant differences between

The indirect immunofluorescence (IF) test and the complement-fixation reaction (CFR) were used in examination of over 1500 sera obtained from patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM) and other health disorders. The evidence obtained supports a direct aetiological relationship between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and IM and points on a relationship of EBV to some other lymphadenopathies and health disorders. The incidence of the IgG type antibody against virus capsid antigen (EB-VCA) and soluble antigen (CF-SA) obtained from EBV genome-positive cells among different age groups of patients is des

8 patients with clinically diagnosed Behçet disease were immunologically investigated. Uveitis was present in 7 of these patients. Although uveitis is a rare presentation of Behçet's disease, it tends to be bilateral when it does occur and to involve both the anterior and posterior segments repeatedly. Nowadays it is rare to observe a hypopyon, thanks to early initiation of therapy. In the late stages, recurrent vitreous haemorrhage complicates the course of the disease and can lead to blindness. HLA-B5 can frequently be demonstrated in patients with Behçet's disease. Detailed serological inve

Cytological preparations from the conjunctiva of schoolchildren were examined by Giemsa staining and by an indirect fluorescent antibody (FA) technique. In addition, chlamydial group-specific antibodies in sera were measured with the complement fixation (CF) test. It has consistently been shown that the FA technique is more sensitive than Giemsa staining for the cytological demonstration of intracytoplasmic inclusions in conjunctival cells from trachoma patients, but reports differ regarding the degree of its superiority. The present study confirmed that the FA technique is more sensitive. Fur

Chlamydia pecorum is a zoonotic pathogen. Here, we report the first case of human infection with C. pecorum. A man aged 51 years with high fever and dry cough was diagnosed with severe community-acquired pneumonia and respiratory failure. C. pecorum was found responsible for the infection, which was detected from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid through metagenomic next-generation sequencing. C. pecorum infection was further identified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and complement fixation test. The patient's condition improved rapidly after targeted treatment. He was a farmer with diab

A 20 year-old white man was admitted with fever and weight loss since 60 days previous to his admission and cardiac failure (functional class IV). The heart was enlarged in the echocardiographic examination without valvular involvement. Liver biopsy showed granulomatous hepatitis with a necrosis focus. The patient was treated with a combination of venous dilators and digital. Serum agglutination test for Brucella showed a titer of 1/250, and complement fixation 1/40. Seven days later, agglutination titer was 1/4000. He was treated with rifampin and trimethoprimsulfametoxazol. He got better; fe

Specific circulating antibodies to the spiral gastric organism, Helicobacter pylori (HP) were detectable in 43% of 68 patients with rheumatoid arthritis by complement fixation test (CFT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a frequency comparable with that of a normal, age-matched population. Presence of these antibodies correlated strongly with a previous history of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and to the severity of NSAID-related dyspeptic symptoms, the latter often leading to multiple drug intolerance. This contrasts with short term, prospective NSAID toxicity data, which show littl

Patients presented here include apparently healthy persons who had diagnostic evidence of chronic cardiac Chagas' disease in the form of a positive complement-fixation test and an abnormal electrocardiogram. They had never been in heart failure. All were examined for autonomic cardiac function. Normal persons served as controls. Patients with Chagas' disease with sole involvement of hollow viscera were also included. In patients with cardiac Chagas' disease, failure of the heart rate to increase after administration of atropine and greatly reduced reflex changes in cardiac rate are believed to

Twenty-three patients with Q fever who were diagnosed over a 3 year period are described. The majority came from the Madrid urban area and less than half had epidemiological antecedents. Nine patients presented with pulmonary infiltrations, 12 with suppressed fever and in 2 criteria for fever of unknown origin were met. The majority had clinical or analytic data of hepatic disease and liver biopsy practiced in 4 patients showed granulomas. Diagnosis was established through the increment of seric antibodies against antigens of phase II C. burnetii, detected by complement fixation test. Acute Q

Subacute progressive panencephalitis is usually a progressive and fatal disease, being uncommon temporary or definitive remissions. A three years old boy, previously vaccinated against measles, developed trembling, progressive and severe mental deterioration, partial seizures and myoclonic jerks. The electroencephalogram showed periodic high amplitude waves concomitantly with myoclonic jerks and the cerebrospinal fluid revealed an increase of the gammaglobulin fraction (16,8), benjoin coloidal reaction shifted to the left and the antimeasles antibody titres were positive (complement fixation t

Ten of thirteen patients with positive histolatex agglutination titers of 1:32 or greater had no evidence of acute histoplasmosis. Three of these false positives had rheumatoid arthritis. A fourth had a rising mycoplasma complement fixation titer, and the fifth had a high titer of cold agglutinins. All of these are associated with abnormal immunoglobulin M production. To evaluate the role of rheumatoid factor in producing false positive histolatex agglutination, the histolatex test was performed on sera from 32 patients having rheumatoid factor at a titer of 1:40 or greater. Four of these sera

Brucella ovis causes a genital disease of sheep manifested by epididymitis in rams and placentitis in ewes producing reduced fertility in the flock. Clinical diagnosis is not sensitive enough and bacteriological testing is not feasible for detection of the disease in large numbers of animals. Indirect methods of serological testing are preferred for routine diagnosis, of which agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID), complement fixation (CF) and ELISA tests are recommended as the most efficient. Since B. ovis shares antigenic components with Brucella canis, it would seem that either strain could be us
