The repair and restoration of the eyelids and orbit can be a medical and surgical challenge. Inadequate orbital volume restoration could lead to poor functional and cosmetic defects. With advances in technology, our surgical techniques are constantly improving. This article focuses on ocular and orbital reconstruction following traumatic, iatrogenic, and acquired defects. Optimal outcomes can only be expected with appropriate diagnosis treatment planning in consultation with other specialists.

We surveyed data collected in our department over the past 5 years on all patients under the age of 30 years who had presented for repair of retinal detachment. Of 52 such patients, 10 (19.2%) had a documented history of atopic dermatitis. Three (27.3%) of the 11 eyes (10 patients) with atopic dermatitis exhibited a break in the ciliary epithelium in the pars plicata and pars plana, the most characteristic finding in this group. In this retrospective study, we examine the efficiency of cyclocryocoagulation in eyes with secondary and congenital glaucoma. We studied 137 eyes with advanced, inadequately controlled glaucoma, which were operated from 1984 to 1993. Besides the intraocular pressure (IOP), we assessed the effect on the visual acuity and the optic nerve. We also compared the efficiency of two different cryomethods (CO2/N2 cyclocryocoagulation). Threshold retinopathy of prematurity occurred in 11 of 34 Alaskan natives compared with 10 of 93 non-natives. Natives constitute 16% of the state population. This significant Alaskan native preponderance was not explained by differences in prenatal or intensive care unit morbidity except that the intervals from birth to extubation and birth to cryotherapy were shorter for natives.
