In the dental field, the value of early prevention is self-evident. Appropriate use of fluoride, parental and child education on correct oral hygiene practices, early detection of conditions such as molar-incisor hypomineralisation, implementation of pit and fissure sealing programmes, and dietary management aimed at reducing sugar intake are all interventions that demonstrate long-term benefits. These measures not only improve the prognosis of future treatments, but also reduce susceptibility to oral diseases in adulthood as well as systemic disorders. Dental caries, the most prevalent chroni

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may experience alterations during orthodontic treatments. Furthermore, gaps in the literature highlight a lack of robust evidence on the impact of clear aligner therapy (CAT) on the TMJ. This review aims to find the current evidence regarding the effects of CAT on the TMJ. Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, LILACS, The Cochrane Library and ProQuest Theses and Dissertations. The eligibility followed PECOS: Permanent-dentition patients (P); CAT (E); CAT group baseline parameters (C); TMJ structural parameters (O). Data

Environmental and systemic factors play a role in the development of hypomineralization characterized by demarcated opacities. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, distribution, severity, and etiologic factors associated with hypomineralization in all primary teeth, hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPM) and evaluate its association with Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH). A sample of 2,102 male and female Brazilian children aged 3 to 10 years exhibiting good general health was examined by 30 calibrated dentists using WHO probes and clinical mirrors, using the index propos

Median diastema is a physiological occurrence that is frequently seen in the maxillary jaw. Therefore, a median diastema has been associated with a wide range of etiological variables, including thumb sucking, supernumerary teeth, tongue thrusting, some dentoalveolar discrepancy, and hypodontia. Patient esthetic and function demands are both negated by the labial frenum's abnormal location in relation to the maxillary anterior teeth, which results in diastema and gingival recession. Lasers are now being used in several fields of dentistry as an alternative to conventional scalpel operations. F

This study presents a case report of an inflammatory dentigerous cyst of tooth #35, associated with its previously endodontically treated deciduous predecessor. Cystic lesion growth caused impaction of the second premolar, displacing it closer to the lower border of the mandible. The lesion represents a typical dentigerous cyst that possibly arises in association with periapical inflammation of a deciduous molar involving the follicle of the premolars. This report highlights the inflammatory etiology of dentigerous cysts, which mainly occur in mixed dentition. A 12-year-old patient was referre

BACKGROUND: Dental caries and enamel defects are the main causes of poor dental health in children, with a substantial impact on their well-being. Use of inhaled asthma medication is a suspected risk factor, but there is a lack of prospective studies investigating this and other prenatal and early life risk factors.
METHODS: Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood 2010 mother-child cohort (COPSAC2010 ) consists of 700 women who were recruited at 24 weeks of pregnancy. 588 of their children participated in a dental examination at 6 years of age (84%) at the COPSAC2010 research un

INTRODUCTION: Extraction of primary maxillary canines in the mixed dentition has been suggested to increase the rate of normal eruption of displaced permanent canines (DPCs). In this study we assessed whether extracting multiple primary teeth increases the rate of normal eruption of DPCs positioned palatally or centrally in the alveolar crest.
METHODS: Unrestricted searches in 8 databases were performed up to March 2021. We looked for data on the prevalence of physiologic eruption of DPCs and the changes in their position from randomized controlled trials. The risk of bias was assessed using

BACKGROUND Dental fusion is a developmental dental anomaly that clinicians must be aware of and able to identify. It results from the union of 2 adjacent tooth germs affecting the normal dentition and leads to a decrease in the number of permanent teeth. Clinically, the fused teeth show excessive width and irregular anatomy and can complicate any endodontic intervention. CASE REPORT A 26-year-old male patient presented to the clinic with severe pain related to the lower right mandibular area. The dental examination revealed a large tilted and irregular fused third molar with the fourth molar.

The most common outcome of defective dental morphogenesis in human patients is dental agenesis (absence of teeth). This may affect either the primary or permanent dentition and can range from 5 or fewer missing teeth (hypodontia), 6 or more (oligodontia), to complete absence of teeth (anodontia). Both isolated and syndromic dental agenesis have been reported to be associated with a large number of mutated genes. The aim of this review was to analyze the dental phenotypes of syndromic and nonsyndromic dental agenesis linked to gene mutations. A systematic review of the literature focusing on ge

OBJECTIVE: Previously, a new embryological classification was introduced subdividing oral clefts into fusion and/or differentiation defects. This subdivision was used to classify all subphenotypes of cleft lip with or without alveolus (CL±A). Subsequently, it was investigated whether further morphological grading of incomplete CLs is clinically relevant, and which alveolar part is deficient in fusion/differentiation defects.
DESIGN: Observational cohort study.
SETTING: Three hundred fifty adult unoperated Indonesian cleft patients presented themselves for operation. Cephalograms, dental cast

INTRODUCTION: Dentofacial aesthetics plays an important role in social interaction and psychological well-being because it affects how people perceive themselves and how they are perceived by society. The maxillary labial frenum is a fold of tissue, usually triangular in shape, extending from the maxillary midline area of the gingiva into the vestibule and mid portion of the upper lip. Maxillary anterior spacing or diastema is a common aesthetic complaint of patients and is frequently seen in children especially in the mixed dentition stage.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. To estimate the prevalence

OBJECTIVE: Malocclusion may result in esthetic impairment and functional disorders such as bad chewing, speech and swallowing, with a negative impact on quality of life. There is uncertainty regarding the effects of breastfeeding on dentofacial malocclusions. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between maternal breastfeeding and dental malocclusions and facial characteristics in adolescents with permanent dentition.
METHODS: Probabilistic sampling of 2060 12- to 15-year-old students in a cross-sectional study was used. Malocclusion, as defined by Angle, and facial charac

Aarskog-Scott syndrome (AAS) is characterized by different facial, skeletal and genital anomalies and may have oral manifestations. A 7-year-old boy was referred to the University General Hospital for treatment of speech difficulties and frequent regurgitation. Characteristics such as a triangle-shaped face, hypertelorism, low-set ears, flattened nose, shawl scrotum and partial syndactylia on hands and feet were observed. Based on these clinical features, the child was diagnosed with AAS. Upon intraoral examination, maxillary atresia and an incomplete cleft palate were observed. The mixed dent

Dental eruption provides markers of growth and is one component of a chimpanzee's physical development. Dental markers help characterize transitions between life stages, e.g., infant to juvenile. Most of what we know about the timing of development in chimpanzees derives from Pan troglodytes. Much less is known about the sister species, Pan paniscus, with few in captivity and a restricted wild range in central Africa. Here we report on the dental eruption timing for female captive P. paniscus (n = 5) from the Milwaukee and San Diego Zoos whose ages are known and range from birth to age 8.54 ye

Tooth eruption and the development of occlusion are significant ontogenetic changes in the masticatory apparatus of mammals. Here, we test the hypothesis that changes in masseter activity are correlated with increased occlusal contacts at major stages of dental development in the alpaca, Lama pacos. We compare electromyographic data from the superficial and deep masseter in infant and juvenile alpacas prior to and following m1 occlusion and from adults with full permanent dentitions. The pre-m1 and post-m1 occlusion groups exhibit similar masseter activity durations, chewing cycle durations, a

Here we present data concerning the pattern of dental development derived from the microcomputed tomography (microCT) study of a recently discovered immature hominin mandible with a mixed dentition recovered from the TD6 level of the Gran Dolina Lower Pleistocene cave site in Sierra de Atapuerca, northern Spain. These data confirm our previous results that nearly 1 million years ago at least one European hominin species had a fully modern pattern of dental development with a clear slowdown in the development of the molar field regarding the anterior dental field. Furthermore, using available i
