[Acute intestinal amebiasis treated with aminosidine].

A clinical-therapeutic assay carried out at the "William Soler" pediatric teaching hospital in children admitted due to an acute diarrheic syndrome and treated with aminosidine sulfate is presented. Histolytic ameba is still an element to be considered in the origin of gastroenteritis. The therapeutic action of aminosidine is evaluated.

Drug and immuno-diagnostic resistant amoebic liver abscess in Ibadan: an elucidation of a possible mechanism.

A thick fibrous walling of amoebic abscess of the liver is very rare. Using as a basis the case of drug and immunodiagnostic resistant amoebic liver abscess in an adult Nigerian, an account is given of the possible mechanisms for such therapeutic and diagnostic failure. A theory of blood-abscess cavity barrier is postulated and suggested as a mechanism for the constant failure to detect antibodies to E. histolytica in the small percentage of cases of amoebic liver abscess (Morris, Powell and Elsdon-Dew, 1970). A study of the rate of diffusion of amoebic excretion/secretion through a thick fibr

[Hepatic amebiasis in an infant].

Case report of a 8 month-old North-African infant with liver amebiasis. This disease is not rare in young children and may be observed in all endemic zones of amebiasis. The clinical characteristics, special for the age, and the biological features are reviewed. The diagnosis relies on immunological tests. Treatment is essentially medical, metronidazole often being effective.

Frequency of Intestinal Protozoa in Patients Receiving Treatment at Van Special Physioactive Special Education and Rehabilitation Center.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of intestinal protozoa in disabled patients attending a rehabilitation center … tients, Cryptosporidium spp. in 15%, Giardia intestinalis in 9%, Cyclospora cayetanensis in 5%, and Entamoeba coli in 4%. Among the subgroups, spina bifida patients had a protozoan infection rate of 83.3%, while the rates in other groups were lower. A significant relationship was detected between the presence of parasites and diarrhea, constipation, and los …

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites, Risk Factors and Zoonotic Aspects in Dog and Cat Populations from Goiás, Brazil.

Gastrointestinal diseases caused by parasites are frequently diagnosed in the clinical routine of domestic animals, especially dogs and cats … re identified: Ancylostoma spp., Toxocara spp., Trichuris vulpis, Dipylidium caninum; Giardia spp., Entamoeba spp., Cystoisospora spp., and Platynosomum fastosum. The risk factors associated with parasitism include age, average income of owners, access to garbage, sewage, waste, outdated deworming, and contact with animals. The results demonstrate the need …

The influence of selected gastrointestinal parasites on apoptosis in intestinal epithelial cells.

Studies on the parasite-host interaction may provide valuable information concerning the modulation of molecular mechanisms as well as of th … of intestinal parasite species (Blastocystis sp., Giardia sp., Cryptosporidium sp., Trichuris sp., Entamoeba histolytica, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Heligmosomoides polygyrus) on the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis in intestinal epithelial cells. This paper stresses that the interdependency between the intestinal parasite and the host results from the …

Averting transmission: A pivotal target to manage amoebiasis.

Amoebiasis is a parasitic infectious disease caused by the enteric protozoan Entamoeba histolytica, a leading basis of deaths accounted to parasites, succeeding malaria and schistosomiasis. Conventional treatment methodologies used to deal with amoebiasis mainly rely on the administration of anti-amoebic compounds and vaccines but are often linked with substantial side-effects on the patient. Besides, cases of development of drug resistance in protozoans have been recorded, contributing further to the reduction in the efficiency of the treatment. Loopholes in the efficacious management of the …

Molecular Analysis of the Enteric Protozoa Associated with Acute Diarrhea in Hospitalized Children.

Pediatric diarrhea is a common cause of death among children under 5 years of age. In the current study, we investigated the frequency of intestinal parasites among 580 pediatric patients with chronic diarrhea. Parasitic protozoa (all species combined) were detected by molecular tools in 22.9% of the children and the most common parasite was Cryptosporidium spp. (15.1%). Blastocystis hominis was detected in 4.7%, Dientamoeba fragilis in 4%, Giardia duodenalis in 1.7%, and Entamoeba histolytica in 0.17%. Protozoan infections were observed among all regional groups, but prevalence was highest am…

Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli and other causes of childhood diarrhoea: a case-control study in children living in a wastewater-use area in Hanoi, Vietnam.

A case-control study was conducted to identify the aetiology of diarrhoeal diseases in pre-school children in a suburban area of Hanoi where the use of untreated wastewater in agriculture and aquaculture is a common practice. Stool specimens and clinical information were collected from 111 pairs of children with diarrhoea and healthy controls. A total of 73 cases (66 %) and 41 controls (36 %) had an enteric pathogen. The pathogens most often associated with diarrhoea were rotavirus (17 % of cases) and Entamoeba histolytica (15 %), followed by Shigella (5 %). Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DE…

Experience with aspiration in cases of amebic liver abscess in an endemic area.

The study presented here was performed to evaluate the need for aspiration in patients with amebic liver abscess (ALA). Patients older than 12 years with a diagnosis of ALA based on clinical features, ultrasound results, and positive amebic serology were included in the study (n=144). Serological testing was performed to detect the presence of immunoglobin G antibody against Entamoeba histolytica, and a value of more than 0.4 optical density units was considered positive. All patients were given intravenous metronidazole (500 mg every 8 h) and their clinical progress and need for abscess aspir…
