An agent-based framework for improving wildlife disease surveillance: A case study of chronic wasting disease in Missouri white-tailed deer.

Epidemiological surveillance for important wildlife diseases often relies on samples obtained from hunter-harvested animals. A problem, however, is that although convenient and cost-effective, hunter-harvest samples are not representative of the population due to heterogeneities in disease distribution and biased sampling. We developed an agent-based modeling framework that i) simulates a deer population in a user-generated landscape, and ii) uses a snapshot of the in silico deer population to simulate disease prevalence and distribution, harvest effort and sampling as per user-specified param

Vitamin D receptor targets hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α and mediates protective effects of vitamin D in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Epidemiological studies have suggested a link between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, the underlying mechanisms have remained unclear. Here, using both clinical samples and experimental rodent models along with several biochemical approaches, we explored the specific effects and mechanisms of vitamin D deficiency in NAFLD pathology. Serum vitamin D levels were significantly lower in individuals with NAFLD and in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice than in healthy controls and chow-fed mice, respectively. Vitamin D supplementation ameliora

Epidemiological studies of natural sources of radiation and childhood cancer: current challenges and future perspectives.

The empirical estimation of cancer risks in children associated with low-dose ionising radiation (<100 mSv) remains a challenge. The main reason is that the required combination of large sample sizes with accurate and comprehensive exposure assessment is difficult to achieve. An international scientific workshop, 'Childhood cancer and background radiation', organised by the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine of the University of Bern, brought together researchers in this field to evaluate how epidemiological studies of background radiation and childhood cancer can best improve our und

Longitudinal associations between 4-hydroxynonenal and depression in coronary artery disease patients.

Depressive symptoms in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) attenuate the cardiovascular benefits of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Given that oxidative stress may be an important mechanism underlying depression, this study aimed to understand the longitudinal relationship between lipid peroxidation markers and depression in CAD. Serum levels of early (lipid hydroperoxides, LPH) and late (4‑hydroxy‑2-nonenal, 4-HNE; 8-isoprotane, 8-ISO) lipid peroxidation markers were measured in 120 CAD patients undergoing CR. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Axis I Disorders - Depression Module

Giardia's Epithelial Cell Interaction In Vitro: Mimicking Asymptomatic Infection?

The protozoan parasite Giardia duodenalis is responsible for more than 280 million cases of gastrointestinal complaints ("giardiasis") every year, worldwide. Infections are acquired orally, mostly via uptake of cysts in contaminated drinking water. After transformation into the trophozoite stage, parasites start to colonize the duodenum and upper jejunum where they attach to the intestinal epithelium and replicate vegetatively. Outcome of Giardia infections vary between individuals, from self-limiting to chronic, and asymptomatic to severely symptomatic infection, with unspecific gastrointesti

Varicella vaccination: a laboured take-off.

Varicella vaccines are highly immunogenic, efficacious and safe in preventing varicella disease. The USA has been the first country recommending universal vaccination. In the European Union/European Economic Area countries, the use of varicella vaccine is heterogeneous, with some countries recommending universal vaccination in children at national or regional level, others only in high-risk groups and others having no recommendation at all. Uncertainties on the potential impact of varicella vaccination on the epidemiology of varicella and herpes zoster still exist. These uncertainties are the

TPH2 gene polymorphisms and major depression--a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthetic pathway for brain serotonin and is considered key factor for maintaining normal serotonin transmission in the central neuron system (CNS). Gene-disease association studies have reported a relationship between TPH2 and major depressive disorder (MDD) in different populations, however subsequent studies have produced contradictory results. OBJECTIVES: We performed a systematic overview and a meta-analysis with all available data up-to-date. METHODS: We scrutinized PubMed, Embase, HuGNet and China National

Short-term association between exposure to ozone and mortality in Oporto, Portugal.

Exposures to air pollution in developed countries have generally decreased over the last two decades. However, many recent epidemiological studies have consistently shown positive associations between low-level exposure to air pollutants and health outcomes. In Portugal, very few studies have analysed the acute effect of air pollutants on health. The present study evaluates the association between exposure to air pollution and daily mortality in the Oporto Metropolitan Area, Portugal. Generalised additive models were used for this analysis. Pollutants assessed were ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and

Epidemiology meets econometrics: using time-series analysis to observe the impact of bed occupancy rates on the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Two multivariate time-series analyses were carried out to identify the impact of bed occupancy rates, turnover intervals and the average length of hospital stay on the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria in a teaching hospital. Epidemiological data on the incidences of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria were collected. Time-series of bed occupancy rates, turnover intervals and the average length of stay were tested for inclusion in the models as independent variables. Incidence was defined as nosocomial cases per

The relationship between particulate air pollution and emergency hospital visits for hypertension in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: A number of epidemiological studies have examined the adverse effect of air pollution on mortality and morbidity. Also, several studies have investigated the associations between air pollution and specific-cause diseases including arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. However, little is known about the relationship between air pollution and the onset of hypertension. OBJECTIVE: To explore the risk effect of particulate matter air pollution on the emergency hospital visits (EHVs) for hypertension in Beijing, China. METHODS: We gathered data on daily EHVs for hypert

Intergenerational effect of an adverse intrauterine environment on perturbation of glucose metabolism.

Human epidemiological and animal studies have revealed the late consequences of malnutrition during gestation and early life on the health of the offspring. These studies have highlighted the inverse relationship between birth weight and the incidence of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes later in life. The aim of this paper is to review the different means of achieving foetal malnutrition and its consequences even for a next generation, in animal models and to identify key area for further research. We address the impact of two models of maternal malnutrition (protein restriction and calo

The interpretation of intensity and aggregation data for infections of Schistosoma haematobium.

The relationships between mean intensities of infection, the aggregation of infection among hosts, and host age are analysed using data from 2 large (> 3000 individuals) field studies of Schistosoma haematobium infection. The data show a convex relationship between mean intensity and age, a convex relationship between an inverse index of aggregation and age, and an age-dependent relationship between the mean and aggregation of infection intensity when levels of infection are high. These patterns are qualitatively compared with the output of mathematical models based on an immigration-death pro

Strong information delay as a driver of epidemic waves: Mathematical modeling for drug trends and epidemic bio-preparedness.

Avoidance behaviors can have a substantial influence on both the spread of an infectious disease and on the long-term dynamics of substance use disorder. However, this behavior is typically reactive based on delayed information related to personal risk as well as both the length of exposure to and retention of that information. This suggests that in epidemic models, feedback delays should be strong - that is, not exponentially distributed (Erlang-1) but instead peaking at a point strictly in the past (Erlang-2 or greater). However, almost all studies of infectivity feedback delays are exponent

Boosting can explain patterns of fluctuations of ratios of inapparent to symptomatic dengue virus infections.

Dengue is the most prevalent arboviral disease worldwide, and the four dengue virus (DENV) serotypes circulate endemically in many tropical and subtropical regions. Numerous studies have shown that the majority of DENV infections are inapparent, and that the ratio of inapparent to symptomatic infections (I/S) fluctuates substantially year-to-year. For example, in the ongoing Pediatric Dengue Cohort Study (PDCS) in Nicaragua, which was established in 2004, the I/S ratio has varied from 16.5:1 in 2006-2007 to 1.2:1 in 2009-2010. However, the mechanisms explaining these large fluctuations are not

Optimizing spatial and seasonal deployment of vaccination campaigns to eliminate wildlife rabies.

Understanding how the spatial deployment of interventions affects elimination time horizons and potential for disease re-emergence has broad application to control programmes targeting human, animal and plant pathogens. We previously developed an epidemiological model that captures the main features of rabies spread and the impacts of vaccination based on detailed records of fox rabies in eastern Germany during the implementation of an oral rabies vaccination (ORV) programme. Here, we use simulations from this fitted model to determine the best vaccination strategy, in terms of spatial placeme

Prospective evaluation of onchocerciasis control strategies.

After more than 13 years of aerial larviciding, the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West-Africa (OCP) is considering the future of its control activities. In the original OCP-area the prevalence of infection has been brought down to very low levels and cessation of larviciding is being contemplated. The introduction of ivermectin has broadened the spectrum of available control measures. Countries outside the OCP are also planning chemotherapy-based onchocerciasis control. The prediction of the epidemiological impact of the different control options is difficult in view of the many factors

Fine-Scale Modeling of Individual Exposures to Ambient PM2.5, EC, NOx, CO for the Coronary Artery Disease and Environmental Exposure (CADEE) Study.

Air pollution epidemiological studies often use outdoor concentrations from central-site monitors as exposure surrogates, which can induce measurement error. The goal of this study was to improve exposure assessments of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5), elemental carbon (EC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO) for a repeated measurements study with 15 individuals with coronary artery disease in central North Carolina called the Coronary Artery Disease and Environmental Exposure (CADEE) Study. We developed a fine-scale exposure modeling approach to determine five tiers of in

Epidemiology of urolithiasis: between big data and field research.

The combined analysis of Global Burden od Disease (GBD) data and traditional systematic reviews still appears to be the preferable approach for studying the epidemiology of urolithiasis, pending the resolution of the critical issues of GBD studies regarding the reliability and completeness of their sources, possible biases in data collection and data modeling.

Association of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease With Incident Aortic Dissection or Aneurysm.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by a broad range of extrarenal complications, yet epidemiologic data on its association with aortic dissection (AD) or aortic aneurysm (AA) remain limited. In the present study, we assessed whether ADPKD is associated with an increased risk of developing these aortic conditions. STUDY DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 2,568,283 individuals without a history of AD or AA, enrolled between April 2014 and August 2023 in a nationwide Japanese epidemiological database provided by

Predictive and preventive pathology of cardiovascular diseases.

The development of genetic models for research on hypertension and stroke, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and stroke-prone SHR (SHRSP), have contributed not only to the elucidation of the pathogenesis of hypertension-related cardiovascular diseases (CVD) but also to their prediction and prevention. Since both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension and stroke in SHR and SHRSP, the detection of the genetic factors and the control of environmental factors have been proven to be useful as predictive and preventive measures against hypertension and
