Unusual cause of lethal pulmonary aspergillosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Two patients admitted to two different medical wards of our institution following respiratory decompensation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were subsequently transferred to the same room of the medical intensive care unit (ICU) and intubated. Both patients developed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and died soon after. Because COPD itself is rarely associated with lethal pulmonary aspergillosis, both cases were reviewed, and a retrospective investigation was conducted. Both patients had repeated sputum cultures while on the medical ward before their admission to the ICU; none

Use of ribotyping to investigate tracheal colonisation by Staphylococcus epidermidis as a source of bacteremia in ventilated newborns.

Ribotyping was used to determine whether a relationship exists between endotracheal tube colonisation with Staphylococcus epidermidis and bacteremia with this organism. Over a three-week period, four mechanically ventilated preterm babies presented with five episodes of infection and bacteremia. For each blood specimen obtained for culture a tracheal aspirate sample was collected at the same time by suctioning. After DNA extraction and cleavage by EcoRI, hybridisation was performed with a digoxigenin-labelled 16S-rDNA probe from Escherichia coli. Five different band patterns were recognised on

Factors associated with variability in management of vascular access ports.

Guidelines and clinical practice recommendations vary on the management of vascular access ports. Traditionally, patient, health system and healthcare professional's factors have been interrelated in studies of clinical practice variability. Understanding variation in the management of vascular access ports and to identify the influence of these factors in the compliance with the most common recommendations of vascular access guidelines, is an important first step for designing targeted improvement interventions. We analysed data from a survey sent to all Spanish outpatient clinics. Overall, 1

The pathogenesis of catheter-related bloodstream infection with noncuffed short-term central venous catheters.

OBJECTIVE: Short-term, noncuffed, percutaneously inserted central venous catheters (CVCs) are widely used and cause more than 250,000 bloodstream infections (BSIs) in hospitals each year in the United States. We report a prospective study undertaken to determine the pathogenesis of CVC-related BSI. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective cohort study in a university hospital 24-bed medical-surgical intensive care unit. PATIENTS AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients participating in two randomized trials during 1998-2000-one studying the efficacy of a 1% chlorhexidine-75% alcohol solution for cutaneous antiseps

A review of risk factors for catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by percutaneously inserted, noncuffed central venous catheters: implications for preventive strategies.

Strategies for preventing central venous catheter (CVC)-related bloodstream infection are most likely to be effective if guided by an understanding of the risk factors associated with these infections. In this critical review of published studies of risk factors for CVC-related bloodstream infection that were prospective and used multivariable techniques of data analysis or that were randomized trials of a preventive measure, a significantly increased risk of catheter-related bloodstream infection was associated with inexperience of the operator and nurse-to-patient ratio in the intensive care

Efficiency and safety of mechanical ventilation with a heat and moisture exchanger changed only once a week.

The cost of mechanical ventilation (MV) is high. Efforts to reduce this cost, as long as they are not detrimental for the patients, are needed. MV with heat and moisture exchangers (HME) changed every 48 h is safe, efficient, and cost-effective. Preliminary reports suggest that the life span of these filters may be prolonged. We determined prospectively whether a hygroscopic and hydrophobic HME (Hygrobac-Dar; Mallinckrodt) provided safe and efficient heating and humidification of the inspired gases when changed only once a week. Patients who were considered to require mechanical ventilation fo

Science and Curation Considerations for the Design of a Mars Sample Return (MSR) Sample Receiving Facility (SRF).

The most important single element of the "ground system" portion of a Mars Sample Return (MSR) Campaign is a facility referred to as the Sample Receiving Facility (SRF), which would need to be designed and equipped to receive the returned spacecraft, extract and open the sealed sample container, extract the samples from the sample tubes, and implement a set of evaluations and analyses of the samples. One of the main findings of the first MSR Sample Planning Group (MSPG, 2019a) states that "The scientific community, for reasons of scientific quality, cost, and timeliness, strongly prefers that

Biofilm formation by multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serotype typhimurium phage type DT104 and other pathogens.

The biofilm-forming capability of Salmonella enterica serotypes Typhimurium and Heidelberg, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from humans, animal farms, and retail meat products was evaluated by using a microplate assay. The tested bacterial species showed interstrain variation in their capabilities to form biofilms. Strong biofilm-forming strains of S. enterica serotypes, E. coli O157: H7, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and A. baumannii were resistant to at least four of the tested antibiotics.

Use of recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor in the Brazil radiation accident.

8 patients with bone marrow failure after a caesium-137 radiation accident were treated with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (rHuGM-CSF). The 7 who were evaluable had prompt increases in granulocytes and bone marrow cellularity. 2 patients died of radiation toxicity and haemorrhage and 2 of bacterial sepsis acquired before the start of rHuGM-CSF treatment. 4 patients survive, including 2 who were treated early and never became infected. This therapeutic approach to radiation-induced granulocytopenia may therefore be useful after radiation and nuclear accident

Results of the reactant sand-fracking pilot test and implications for the in situ remediation of chlorinated VOCs and metals in deep and fractured bedrock aquifers.

Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), such as the Waterloo Funnel and Gate System, first implemented at Canadian Forces Borden facility in 1992, are a passive remediation technology capable of controlling the migration of, and treating contaminated groundwater in situ. Most of the PRBs installed to date have been shallow installations created by backfilling sheet-pile shored excavations with iron filing reactive media. More recently continuous trenchers [R. Multidrug-resistant bacterial contamination of healthcare workers' mobile phones, decontamination efficacy, and potential implications for hospital-acquired infections.

Mobile phones are indispensable clinical tools for healthcare workers (HCWs), yet remain largely unaddressed within infection prevention and control (IPC) frameworks. Repeated handling during patient care combined with inconsistent disinfection may allow these devices to serve as multidrug-resistant (MDR) organism reservoirs contributing to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). A hospital-based cross-sectional analytical study with an embedded intervention and post-intervention follow-up was conducted at Menoufia University Hospitals, Egypt (2025-2026). Swabs from 300 HCWs' mobile phones ac

An ultrasensitive biosensor for fast detection of Salmonella using 3D magnetic grid separation and urease catalysis.

Screening of pathogenic bacteria plays a crucial role in preventing foodborne disease outbreaks. In this study, an ultrasensitive biosensor was developed for fast detection of Salmonella using self-assembled magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) chains for continuous-flow separation of Salmonella from large-volume sample, urease coated gold nanoparticles (GNPs) for specific labelling of Salmonella and efficient amplification of signal, and linear scan voltammetry for sensitive detection of catalysate. First, MNP chains were formed and distributed in a 3D spiral channel using mutually repelling cylindric

Inactivation of animal and human prions by hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilization.

Prions cause various transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. They are highly resistant to the chemical and physical decontamination and sterilization procedures routinely used in healthcare facilities. The decontamination procedures recommended for the inactivation of prions are often incompatible with the materials used in medical devices. In this study, we evaluated the use of low-temperature hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilization systems and other instrument-processing procedures for inactivating human and animal prions. We provide new data concerning the efficacy of hydrogen peroxid
