We describe a patient with invasive necrotizing cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae. The patient, who had been suffering from acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) for eight months, had erythema and necrosis surrounded by swelling on the dorsum of his left hand. Debridement was performed, and microscopic examination of the obtained specimens revealed mucormycosis. Because amphotericin B was ineffective, amputation at the left shoulder joint was performed. Acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau (ACH) is a rare type of pustular psoriasis affecting the digits. We report on a 43-year-old female patient who had been suffering from ACH for more than 20 years. The aetiology of vesicular eruptions on the palms and on the sides of the fingers (pompholyx) is unclear. The present study was undertaken to establish whether tinea pedis, atopic dermatitis or nickel allergy is a risk factor for development of vesicular eruptions. The present study, as part of PROMETES (Swiss Prospective Metal Worker Eczema Study), was performed to examine risk factors for the development of occupational hand dermatitis in metal-worker trainees. Cocamidopropyl betaine is an amphoteric surfactant used increasingly in cosmetic products. We describe 20 cases of cosmetic allergy to cocamidopropyl betaine; all were caused by shampoo or shower gel. 8 patients were hairdressers, who had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from shampoos. We recommend patch testing cocamidopropyl betaine 1% aq. routinely in hairdressers with dermatitis of the hands, and in all patients suspected of suffering from cosmetic allergy.

We report two new cases of HIV-1 seropositive subjects who developed porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). Laboratory examinations revealed a rise of uroporphyrin in the 24-hour urine and a fall of CD4 lymphocytes below 200/mm3 reflecting severe immuno-depression. Treatment with iterative phlebotomy resulted in regression of PCT. In both patients HIV seropositivity was discovered before PCT was diagnosed. Up to now, none of the hypotheses put forward concerning the exact role played by HIV in the genesis of PCT has been confirmed.

We describe three patients with trophic ulceration and blistering of the fingertips associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. One of the patients also had non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Autonomic neuropathy distal to the carpal tunnel was probably present in all subjects at the time of presentation; in the patient with recent symptoms the skin was warm, and sweating was virtually absent, whilst the other two patients described cold skin, consistent with prolonged autonomic neuropathy.
