Self-reported exposure to pesticides in residential settings and risk of breast cancer: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Pesticides are widely used in households to control insects and weeds. Several studies, over the past decades, have examined the possible relationship of serum concentration of organochlorine pesticides and the development of breast cancer. However, little data exists regarding an association between self-reported, residential exposure to pesticides and breast cancer risk. We, therefore, present a case-control study examining self-reported exposure to household pesticides with regard to associated risk of breast cancer. METHODS: This study was conducted in the area in and around N

Influence of Sublethal Carbon Dioxide on Biological Characteristics and Life Table Parameters of Cynaeus angustus (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Understanding insect survival and developmental characteristics in sublethal carbon dioxide (0.25-4%), which could exist in stored grain, is beneficial to scientific pest management. The survival, developmental duration, oviposition, and life table parameters of Cynaeus angustus (LeConte) were measured with carbon dioxide at 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4% in air, respectively, and 0.04% as a control. The developmental duration at 4% of carbon dioxide was 87 days versus 90 days in control at 23 °C, 79 days versus 85 days in control at 28 °C. The generation survival rate varied from 77% to 69% at 2

Novel Sterile Insect Technology Program Results in Suppression of a Field Mosquito Population and Subsequently to Reduced Incidence of Dengue.

BACKGROUND: There is a steady rise in the global incidence of Aedes-borne arbovirus disease. It has become urgent to develop alternative solutions for mosquito vector control. We developed a new method of sterilization of male mosquitoes with the goal to suppress a local Aedes aegypti population and to prevent the spread of dengue. METHODS: Sterile male mosquitoes were produced from a locally acquired Ae. aegypti colony by using a treatment that includes double-stranded RNA and thiotepa. A field study was conducted with sterile mosquito releases being performed on a weekly basis in predefined

Repellent, Lethal Activity, and Synergism of Cannabis sativa Extracts with Terpenes Against a Laboratory Colony of Triatoma infestans.

Triatoma infestans is one of the primary vectors of Chagas disease. This vector has developed increasing resistance to pyrethroids, the main insecticides used for its control. Recent studies have highlighted the repellent and lethal effects of Cannabis sativa on insects, suggesting its potential use in pest management. Based on this, we hypothesize that C. sativa could be a viable bioactive for controlling T. infestans. To test this hypothesis, acetone and ethanol extracts were obtained from the inflorescences of C. sativa L. (Deep Mandarine variety) using sonication. These extracts were analy

Development of conventional and real-time multiplex PCR-based assays for estimation of natural infection rates and Trypanosoma cruzi load in triatomine vectors.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a complex anthropozoonosis with distinct domestic and sylvatic mammal species acting as potential reservoirs. The diversity of vector species and their habitats are among the factors that hinder the control of the disease. Control programs periodically monitor the prevalence of T. cruzi infection in insect bugs through microscopical observation of diluted feces. However, microscopy presents limited sensitivity in samples with low parasite numbers, difficulties in examining all evolutionary stages of the insect and may in turn be limited to differentiate T. cruzi f

Comparative insecticidal properties of two nucleopolyhedrovirus vectors encoding a similar toxin gene chimer.

Laboratory, greenhouse and field studies were conducted to characterize the insecticidal properties of genetically altered forms of Autographa californica (Speyer) nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcNPV) and Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) NPV (HzNPV) against selected heliothine species. The altered viruses each contained a chimeric 0.8-kb fragment encoding the insect-specific, sodium channel neurotoxin from the Algerian scorpion Androctonus australis Hector (AaIT, hence recombinant viruses designated Ac-AaIT and Hz-AaIT). Based on LD50 values, results from diet-overlay bioassays showed Ac-AaIT and Hz-AaIT to b

Different mechanisms of X-ray irradiation-induced male and female sterility in Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) is the major vector that transmits many diseases including dengue, Zika, and filariasis in tropical and subtropical regions. Due to the growing resistance to chemical-based insecticides, biological control methods have become an emerging direction to control mosquito populations. The sterile insect technique (SIT) deploys high doses of ionizing radiation to sterilize male mosquitoes before the release. The Wolbachia-based population suppression method of the incompatible insect technique (IIT) involves the release of Wolbachia-infected males to sterilize

Engineered mosquitoes to fight mosquito borne diseases: not a merely technical issue.

Malaria, dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases pose dramatic problems of public health, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Historically, vector control has been one of the most successfully strategies to eradicate some mosquito-borne diseases, as witnessed by malaria eradication in Mediterranean regions such as Italy and Greece. Vector control through insecticides has been used worldwide; unfortunately, it is losing effectiveness due to spread of resistances. Control of mosquito-borne diseases through field-releases of genetically engineered mosquitoes is an innovative and

Predicting triatoma dimidiata abundance and infection rate: a risk map for natural transmission of chagas disease in the yucatan peninsula of Mexico.

Chagas disease, a major public health problem in Latin America, is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by hematophageous insects from the Triatominae subfamily. Control of this disease is based on domestic vector control with insecticides and improvements in housing. As with other vector-borne diseases, the identification of areas of high risk of disease transmission is a major prerequisite for the planning and implementation of cost-effective control programs. In this study, we explored the relationship between Triatoma dimidiata geographic distribution and bioc

Combining the Sterile Insect Technique with the Incompatible Insect Technique: III-Robust Mating Competitiveness of Irradiated Triple Wolbachia-Infected Aedes albopictus Males under Semi-Field Conditions.

Combination of the sterile insect technique with the incompatible insect technique is considered to be a safe approach to control Aedes albopictus populations in the absence of an accurate and scalable sex separation system or genetic sexing strain. Our previous study has shown that the triple Wolbachia-infected Ae. albopictus strain (wAlbA, wAlbB and wPip) was suitable for mass rearing and females could be completely sterilized as pupae with a radiation dose of at least 28 Gy. However, whether this radiation dose can influence the mating competitiveness of the triple infected males was still

Field tests of hexabutyldistannoxane (TBTO) in slow-release formulations against Biomphalaria spp.

Hexabutyldistannoxane (TBTO) in an asphalt base was found to retain molluscicidal activity for more than a year in the field. It was not deactivated by immersion in mud or by drying and exposure to the sun. Complete elimination of planorbid snails was achieved and maintained when repopulation pressure was sporadic, but control of a continuously entering population was not practicable. Fixing the product at the site is important, and a formulation in fragments of rubber that floated failed after 1-2 months. TBTO apparently acts cumulatively in snails, but is only initially toxic to aquatic inse

PEGylation of shellac-based nanocarriers for enhanced colloidal stability.

Shellac is a biomaterial obtained from secretion of lac insects. Nanoparticles based on shellac are prepared by nanoprecipitation and miniemulsion techniques. The corrosion inhibitor 2-mercaptobenzothiazole can be efficiently encapsulated in nanoparticles. Release kinetics of the inhibitor from the nanocarriers is controlled by pH of the surrounding environment as well as the introduction of other biopolymers such as lignin and zein. To overcome the low colloidal stability of shellac nanoparticles in saline conditions, shellac is conjugated with poly(ethylene glycol) moieties. After PEGylation

Culturing and egg collection of Aedes aegypti.

Blood-feeding mosquitoes, including the dengue and yellow fever vector Aedes aegypti, transmit many of the world's deadliest diseases. Such diseases have resurged in developing countries and pose clear threats for epidemic outbreaks in developed countries. Recent mosquito genome projects have stimulated interest in the potential for arthropod-borne disease control by genetic manipulation of vector insects, and genes that regulate development are of particular interest. This protocol describes methods for culturing Ae. aegypti and includes a procedure for egg collection that can be used in conj

Avermectin intoxication with coma, myoclonus, and polyneuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Avermectin has been used in the control of parasites and insects. Severe poisoning symptoms in humans include altered mental status, hypotension, and respiratory failure. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of acute avermectin intoxication at a very high dose (414.2 mg/kg) who presented with coma, myoclonus, and polyneuropathy after oral ingestion. DISCUSSION: The symptoms are supposed to be associated directly with the avermectin poisoning and possibly with the toxicity of solvents or other additives. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case with avermecti

Uncovering a novel role of otu in lepidopteran Bombyx mori male fertility.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility has emerged as a global concern, with dysfunctional spermatogenesis being a major cause. A significant proportion of agricultural pests belong to lepidopteran species, making it valuable to explore the conserved genes involved in spermatogenesis within the lepidopteran model, Bombyx mori. Identifying these genes could reveal potential targets for pest control and enhance insect sterility technologies. Although the ovarian tumor (otu) gene is essential for oogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster, its role in Lepidoptera remains largely unexplored. RESULTS: In this stu

Biochemical, molecular cytogenetic and correlation analyses of Bacillus thuringiensis sublethal concentration toxicity on Spodoptera frugiperda larval Hemolymph.

Bacillus thuringiensis is considered one of the most environmentally safe tools for controlling various insect pests, including the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). This pest remains one of the most serious threats to global food security. Although Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk) is an essential long-term pest control agent, most research has examined its lethal effects only on larval midgut tissue as the primary target organ. Accordingly, this study explored Btk toxicity on the third-instar S. frugiperda larval hemolymph as a secondary consequence using a multifac

Detection of Active Wood-Boring Insect Larvae Using Acoustic Emission Measurements: Principles, Experimental Validation, and Practical Applications.

The larvae of wood-boring insects often cause damage to wooden buildings, furniture, and objects of cultural heritage. A fundamental practical challenge in assessment and conservation is reliably distinguishing between active and inactive infestations-a distinction that conventional visual inspection methods cannot always resolve with confidence. We present a selection of experiments for the implementation of acoustic emission (AE) measurement methods for these inspections, spanning from highly controlled laboratory settings to practical field tests. An overview explains the physical principle

Navigational Signals for Insect and Slug Parasitic Nematodes: The Role of Ascorbate-Glutathione System and Volatiles Released by Insect-Damaged Sweet Pepper Roots.

This study of underground multitrophic communication, involving plant roots, insects, and parasitic nematodes, is an emerging field with significant implications for understanding plant-insect-nematode interactions. Our research investigated the impact of wireworm (Agriotes lineatus L. [Coleoptera: Elateridae]) infestations on the ascorbate-glutathione system in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants in order to study the potential role in root-exudate-mediated nematode chemotaxis. We observed that an A. lineatus infestation led to a decrease in leaf ascorbate levels and an increase in root

Diabrotica v. virgifera Seems Not Affected by Entomotoxic Protease Inhibitors from Higher Fungi.

Certain soil insects, such as the root-damaging larvae of the maize pest Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), are increasingly difficult to control because of recent bans of some insecticides. An alternative and safer approach may be the development of biopesticides based on entomotoxic defense proteins of higher fungi. Many of these potentially interesting proteins are protease inhibitors, and some have been shown to adversely affect insects. We examined the effects of the cysteine protease inhibitors macrocypin 1, 3, and 4 from Macrolepiota procera, clitocypin from Cli
