Changing circumstances regarding access to emergency contraception (EC) warrant nurses' review of its current status. Nurses have the potential to improve adolescents' awareness of and access to EC so that adolescents may prevent pregnancy. Research suggests that adolescents lack awareness of EC methods that prevent pregnancy following an unprotected act of intercourse. Many pregnancies occurring in adolescence could be prevented with appropriate EC use. A total of 265 women who had the Norplant system inserted were followed for 5 years. The present study is based on 11,435 women-months of use, describing the continuation rates and efficacy of Norplant among these women. The 5-year cumulative continuation rate was 45.7 per 100 continuing users. The continuation rates were age-dependent. This is a cross-sectional study involving 364 clients who have had Norplant implants insertion for contraception at the Gandhi Memorial Hospital (GMH) during the second half of 1994. It was part of the pilot project designed to introduce Norplant in Ethiopia after evaluating the safety, efficacy, tolerance, acceptability and reversibility of the method.
