This article investigates the development of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction caused by diabetes mellitus. We performed power spectral analysis of heart rate variability in WBN/Kob rats as a model of spontaneous diabetes. The heart rate of the rats was measured continuously for 24 hours with an implanted telemetric transmitter, and power spectral analysis of heart rate variability was performed on continuous electrocardiograms. At 4 to 5 months of age, the rats indicated a tendency toward a decrease in plasma insulin concentration without hyperglycemia. At 8 to 9 months of age, they showed

The relationship between autonomic nervous system activity (ANA) and coronary vasoreactivity during transient myocardial ischemia was determined in patients with vasospastic angina (VA). ANA was measured by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability and humoral factors following intravenous infusion of insulin in 24 patients with VA and 6 control patients. Nine (38%) of the VA patients had significant ST segment depression (STD), and 4 of these patients had symptomatic STD. The frequency of anginal episodes in the 9 patients with VA and STD was significantly greater than that in the 15

The posterior insular cortex of the rat contains an area of cardiac chronotropic representation within which tachycardia sites occur rostrally to those producing bradycardia. In the current study using ketamine-anesthetized rats, the insular cortex was stimulated for 1 h using a phasic technique synchronized with the cardiac cycle. Tachycardia was associated with an increase in plasma norepinephrine concentration; epinephrine remained unchanged. This indicates a neural origin of the norepinephrine increment. The tachycardia response was completely blocked by atenolol. Plasma catecholamine leve

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive measure of autonomic nervous system function and a sensitive marker of physiological stress. Health professions students are exposed to severe academic stress and multiple lifestyle-related factors that may influence autonomic regulation. This study aimed to evaluate HRV profiles in health professions students and examine associations with academic stress and lifestyle factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 237 students (81.4% females). HRV was assessed under standardized resting conditions using time-domain, frequency-domain, and Po

This study investigates the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) during wakefulness and sleep apnea severity, with a focus on long-term autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation. Using longitudinal data from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), we analyzed 15-minute pre-sleep ECG segments from 112 carefully selected participants, applying strict exclusion criteria to minimize confounding from comorbidities and medications known to affect HRV. A comprehensive set of time-domain, frequency-domain, and nonlinear HRV features was extracted and compared across apnea severity groups

Background: Pupil size variability (PSV) has emerged as a potential non-contact indicator of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function; however, its physiological origins remain unclear. This study aims to develop a computational model to investigate the physiological foundations of PSV and assess how frequency-domain indices reflect cardiovascular autonomic balance. Methods: We integrated a well-established cardiovascular regulation model with a biomechanical pupillary muscle plant. The model simulates PSV alongside heart rate variability (HRV) by transmitting respiratory and baroreflex inputs

The intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS), composed of sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory neurons embedded within the heart, plays a pivotal role in regulating cardiac electrophysiology and contractility. Functional imbalance within this network represents a central mechanism driving myocardial infarction, heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), and hypertension. Despite decades of investigation, the precise pathophysiological basis of ICNS involvement in cardiovascular disease remains poorly understood. Traditional bulk RNA sequencing, which measures averaged gene expression ac

Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is commonly observed in various mental disorders, particularly when individuals engage in prolonged cognitive-emotional tasks that require ANS adjustment to workload. Although the understanding of the temporal dynamics of sympathetic and parasympathetic tones in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is limited, analyzing ANS reactions to cognitive-emotional workload could provide valuable insights into one of the underlying causes of OCD. This study investigated the temporal dynamics of heart rate (HR) and pupil area (PA) while participants wit

Background/Objectives: One prior study revealed that a newly developed auto-titrating mandibular advancement device (AMAD) could potentially enhance polysomnographic outcomes in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, evidence regarding its impact on autonomic nervous system dysregulation in OSA remains limited. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of conventional mandibular advancement devices (MADs) and AMDA on autonomic function. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from patients who visited a sleep center with complaints of snoring and sleep apnea (30 and 15

Guilt is a negative emotion, elicited by realizing one has caused actual or perceived harm to another person. Anecdotally, guilt often is described as a visceral and physical experience. However, while the way that the body responds to and contributes to emotions is well known in basic emotions, little is known about the characteristics of guilt as generated by the autonomic nervous system. This study investigated the physiologic signature associated with guilt in adults with no history of psychological or autonomic disorder. Healthy adults completed a novel task, including an initial question

Joint hypermobility (JH) conditions suggest dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) (dysautonomia), associated with multifactor non-articular local musculoskeletal pain, and remains a complex treatment. This study aims to determine the effects of musculoskeletal interfiber counterirritant stimulation (MICS) as an innovative treatment of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) on the upper trapezius muscle in JH patients. We evaluate the ANS activity by wavelet transform spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in sixty women, equally divided: MTrP, MTrP + general joint hypermobili

Fibromyalgia is a multi-symptomatic disorder characterized by generalized pain. The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia is supposedly an interplay between central nervous system hyper-responsiveness, autonomic dysfunction, and peripheral pain. In this cross-sectional study, the objective was to assess central sensitization and autonomic activity in patients with fibromyalgia compared with control. Fifty adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia by the modified American College of Rheumatology 2010 criteria and an equal number of age- and sex-matched controls participated in the study in an urban tertiary

Inhaled hypertonic saline (HTS) treatment is used to improve lung health in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The current consensus is that the treatment generates an osmotic gradient that draws water into the airways and increases airway surface liquid (ASL) volume. However, there is evidence that HTS may also stimulate active secretion of ASL by airway epithelia through the activation of sensory neurons. We tested the contribution of the nervous system and airway epithelia on HTS-stimulated ASL height increase in CF and wild-type swine airway. We used synchrotron-based imaging to investiga

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed developmental disorders in childhood characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. ADHD manifests in the child's development by deficits in cognitive, executive and perceptor-motor functions, emotional regulation and social adaptation. Although the exact cause has not yet been known, the crucial role in the development of this disease plays the interaction of genetic, neurobiological and epigenetic factors. According to current knowledge, ADHD is defined as a biological dysfunction of central n

We investigated the role of the autonomic nervous system to cardiovascular responses to obstructive apnea in awake, unrestrained rats, and measured expression of Fos induced by apnea in the brainstem. We implanted a tracheal balloon contained in a rigid tube to allow the induction of apnea without inducing pain in the trachea. During bouts of 15s of apnea, heart rate fell from 371±8 to 161±11bpm (mean±SEM, n=15, p<0.01) and arterial pressure increased from 115±2 to 131±4mmHg (p<0.01). Bradycardia was due to parasympathetic activity because it was blocked by the muscarinic antagonist, methylatr
