Impact of Rod-Dominant Mesopic Conditions on Spatial Summation and Surround Suppression in Early Visual Cortex.

Mesopic (dim light) conditions are prevalent in everyday environments, yet most human vision research is conducted under idealized, photopic (bright) conditions. Electrophysiological studies suggest that under mesopic conditions, contrast-encoding retinal ganglion cell receptive fields expand their center width while diminishing surround inhibition. These retinal modifications enhance light capture by increasing the summation area but they limit spatial resolution. However, the impact of mesopic conditions on human cortical spatial integration mechanisms remains unclear. To address this, we in

How Much Does Stress Cost? A Case-Control Study on Vagally Mediated Heart Rate Variability Responses in Anxious and Non-Anxious Individuals During a Cognitive Task.

Background: Heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) are valid indices of psychophysical stress. Healthy individuals typically exhibit high vagal tone, as indicated by vagally mediated HRV (vmHRV) values. Despite current knowledge, HRV differences between anxious subjects and controls during a cognitive task have not yet been studied. Methods: Anxious people were compared to controls through the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y), both considering State Anxiety (S-Anxiety) and Trait Anxiety (T-Anxiety) one at a time. Subsequently, a psychophysiological stress profile (PSP) was conducted to

One-HIIT wonder: Can music make high-intensity interval training more pleasant?

The use of music as an aid to recovery during and after exercise is an area of growing scientific interest. We investigated the effects of in-task, asynchronous music and respite-active music (i.e., music used for active recovery in between high-intensity exercise bouts) on a range of psychological, psychophysical and psychophysiological outcomes. Participants (N = 28; 14 females) made five laboratory visits for: (a) pre-test/familiarisation; (b) fast-tempo music during supramaximal exercise bouts and medium-tempo music during active-recovery periods; (c) fast-tempo music during exercise and n

The role of the parietal lobe in task-irrelevant suppression during learning.

BACKGROUND: Attention optimizes the selection of visual information, while suppressing irrelevant visual input through cortical mechanisms that are still unclear. We set to investigate these processes using an attention task with an embedded to-be-ignored interfering visual input. OBJECTIVE: We delivered electrical stimulation to attention-related brain areas to modulate these facilitatory/inhibitory attentional mechanisms. We asked whether overtly training on a task while being covertly exposed to visual features from a visually identical but different task tested at baseline might influence

Covid-19 affects taste independent of taste-smell confusions: results from a combined chemosensory home test and online survey from a large global cohort.

People often confuse smell loss with taste loss, so it is unclear how much gustatory function is reduced in patients self-reporting taste loss. Our pre-registered cross-sectional study design included an online survey in 12 languages with instructions for self-administering chemosensory tests with 10 household items. Between June 2020 and March 2021, 10,953 individuals participated. Of these, 5,225 self-reported a respiratory illness and were grouped based on their reported COVID test results: COVID-positive (COVID+, N = 3,356), COVID-negative (COVID-, N = 602), and COVID unknown for those wai

Contrast Increment and Decrement Processing in Individuals With and Without Diabetes.

PURPOSE: Animal models suggest that ON retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) may be more vulnerable to diabetic insult than OFF cells. Using three psychophysical tasks to infer the function of ON and OFF RGCs, we hypothesized that functional responses to contrast increments will be preferentially affected in early diabetes mellitus (DM) compared to contrast decrement responses. METHODS: Fifty-two people with DM (type 1 or type 2) (mean age = 34.8 years, range = 18-60 years) and 48 age-matched controls (mean age = 35.4 years, range = 18-60 years) participated. Clinical features of chronic primary pain in individuals presenting painful temporomandibular disorder and comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of chronic primary pain (CPP), according to the recently released International Classification of Disease (ICD-11) criteria, refers to conditions with complex aetiologies. CPP is characterized by specific clinical features such as generalized sensory hypersensitivity and widespread pain, and is associated with functional disability and emotional distress. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated clinical features of CPP in individuals with painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and comorbidities (fibromyalgia, migraine and/or tension-type headache). METHODS: This cross

Absolute and Relative Reliability of a Comprehensive Quantitative Sensory Testing Protocol in Women Treated for Breast Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative sensory testing (QST) consists of noninvasive psychophysical assessment techniques to evaluate the functioning of the somatosensory nervous system. Despite the importance of reliability for the correct use of QST results in research and clinical practice, the relative and absolute intra- and inter-rater reliability of a comprehensive QST protocol to evaluate the functioning of both the peripheral and central somatosensory nervous system in a breast cancer population has not yet been investigated. SETTING: University Hospitals, Leuven, Belgium. SUBJECTS: Thirty women a

Applying the Rapid OPPERA Algorithm to Predict Persistent Pain Outcomes Among a Cohort of Women Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery.

Persistent postmastectomy pain after breast surgery is variable in duration and severity across patients, due in part to interindividual variability in pain processing. The Rapid OPPERA Algorithm (ROPA) empirically identified 3 clusters of patients with different risk of chronic pain based on 4 key psychophysical and psychosocial characteristics. We aimed to test this type of group-based clustering within in a perioperative cohort undergoing breast surgery to investigate differences in postsurgical pain outcomes. Women (N = 228) scheduled for breast cancer surgery were prospectively enrolled i

A longitudinal study of olfactory dysfunction and parosmia in mild COVID-19 cases.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19-related olfactory dysfunction (OD) can persist long after patients recover from acute infection, yet few studies have investigated the long-term progression of this complication. Moreover, existing studies are focused on hyposmia/anosmia but parosmia is becoming an increasingly recognized long-term symptom. METHODS: We completed a longitudinal study about OD in individuals with mild cases of COVID-19. Participants completed a questionnaire and Brief Smell Identification Test (BSIT) one week, one month and one year after diagnosis. At one-year, participants completed an ad

Persisting chemosensory impairments in 366 healthcare workers following COVID-19: an 11-month follow-up.

Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions (OD, GD) are prevalent symptoms following COVID-19 and persist in 6%-44% of individuals post-infection. As only few reports have described their prognosis after 6 months, our main objective was to assess the prevalence of OD and GD 11-month post-COVID-19. We also aimed to determine intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) of chemosensory self-ratings for the follow-up of chemosensory sensitivity. We designed an observational study and distributed an online questionnaire assessing chemosensory function to healthcare workers with a RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-

Dynamic Functional Brain Connectivity Underlying Temporal Summation of Pain in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal central pain processing is a leading cause of pain in fibromyalgia (FM) and is perceptually characterized with the psychophysical measure of temporal summation of pain (TSP). TSP is the perception of increasingly greater pain in response to repetitive or tonic noxious stimuli. Previous neuroimaging studies have used static (i.e., summary) measures to examine the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) correlates of TSP in FM. However, functional brain activity rapidly and dynamically reorganizes over time, and, similarly, TSP is a temporally evolving process. This stud

Visual Function in Eyes with Intermediate AMD with and without Retinal Pigment Abnormalities.

SIGNIFICANCE: In intermediate AMD, a simple, clinically feasible vision test of sensitivity to radial deformation is significantly more impaired in eyes with hyperpigmentation than in eyes with large drusen but normal retinal pigmentation, consistent with the former's increased risk of progression to advanced AMD. This ongoing longitudinal study will determine whether this vision measure is predictive of progression to advanced AMD. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether simple, clinically feasible psychophysical measures distinguish between two levels of intermediate AMD that differ

Workplace violence toward resident doctors in public hospitals of Syria: prevalence, psychological impact, and prevention strategies: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence (WPV) against healthcare workers is a common and daily problem in hospitals worldwide. Studies in different countries indicated that exposure to WPV potentially impacts the psychological status of healthcare workers. However, there is a paucity of studies approaching this issue in the Syrian healthcare system. OBJECTIVES: This study had three objectives: (1) to estimate the prevalence of violence against resident doctors in Syria, (2) to examine the association between WPV and resident doctors' psychological stress, sleep quality, depression, and general healt

High prevalence of long-term olfactory dysfunction confirmed by olfactory testing after a community COVID-19 outbreak.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of long-term olfactory and gustatory dysfunction in participants suffering from sudden chemosensory loss due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unknown. Furthermore, evaluations of the reliability of participants' self-reporting of olfactory function (SOF) and gustatory function (SGF) using extended objective psychophysical testing are missing. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study in a PCR-tested community in Thuringia, Germany, olfactory function was extensively examined 4 months after a COVID-19 outbreak using the "Sniffin Sticks" test battery to det
