Auricular acupressure for myopia prevention and control in children and its effect on choroid and retina: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, because of the increasing incidence, the prevention and control of myopia has become an urgent issue. In China, auricular acupressure has been commonly used in the clinical treatment of myopia in children, but the exact effectiveness remains unproven. The purpose of this trial is to observe the efficacy of auricular acupressure in myopia prevention and control, as well as its effect on the choroidal and retinal thickness. METHOD/DESIGN: A total of 480 subjects at 8-9 years old will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention group versus a control group. The interven

The efficacy of immunotherapy for in-transit metastases of melanoma: an analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Nearly 10% of patients with high-risk early-stage melanoma will develop satellite or in-transit metastases (ITM), classified as stage III disease similar to lymph node metastases. The pivotal registration trials of the CTLA-4 antibody ipilimumab, and the PD-1 antibodies nivolumab and pembrolizumab, also included patients with unresectable stage III disease. However, there has been no analysis of patients with ITM, and anecdotal retrospective small series have indicated a potential lesser effect. This study aimed to identify patients with unresectable ITM within the randomized trials, and to de

Clinical outcomes following rhythm control for atrial fibrillation: is early better?

Introduction: An integral aspect of atrial fibrillation (AF) management involves better symptom control, incorporating a rate control, rhythm control, or a combination strategy. The 2020 ESC Guidelines suggest that rhythm control strategy should be recommended for symptomatic patients, to mitigate their symptoms and improve the quality of life. However, adequately powered randomized control trials and prospective 'real-world' registries are needed to fully assess the impact of early rhythm control strategies on clinical outcomes in patients with AF.Objective: In this narrative review, we discu

The hierarchy of different treatments for myogenous temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

The best treatment modality for the management of painful temporomandibular disorders of muscular origin (M-TMD) with predictable outcomes based on solid evidence is still not well defined. Thus, the aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to identify the best treatment for adult patients with M-TMD. An electronic search was undertaken from the inception of each database to August 2018, to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs), which are comparing two or more of the following treatment modalities in patients with M-TMD: counseling therapy; occlusal appliances; manual therapy; laser th

[Diagnosis and treatment of cardiac amyloidosis : A position statement of the ESC working group on myocardial and pericardial diseases 2021].

Cardiac amyloidosis is still considered a rare disease, although recent data show that it is the cause of cardiac dysfunction more frequently than expected. The diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis is based on the detection of extracellular deposits of misfolded proteins in the myocardium. This detection can be made invasively or noninvasively and is based on a tentative diagnosis that forms the foundation for further diagnostic measures. As different forms of amyloidosis may have different clinical presentations, suspicion of amyloidosis is often difficult. As not only the diagnostic possibilitie

Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy: A Review of the Evidence.

Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy was developed as an invasive embryo-selection technique and is extensively used in in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. Around 95,000 preimplantation genetic testing cycles were carried out in the United States between 2014 and 2016, the majority of which were performed for aneuploidy. The objective of preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy is to select for transfer a euploid embryo, after embryo biopsy and cytogenetic analysis. The current technique consists of applying comprehensive chromosome screening on trophectoderm cells after blast

The ACAMTO study-impact of add-on osteopathic treatment on adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) mainly affects women (sex ratio 1/10) and most often starts during adolescence. The prognosis of AN remains poor (10% of deaths and high risk of chronicity). Body dissatisfaction, disturbances in recognition and identification of body sensations are some of the key symptoms of AN. However, there is a contrast between this consensual observation of body image disorders in AN, and the relative deficit of specifically targeted body treatments. Our proposal for a body approach specifically dedicated to AN is based on the understanding that posture, breathing, musc

Comparison of postoperative analgesic effects in response to either dexamethasone or dexmedetomidine as local anesthetic adjuvants: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

This review compares the effects of peripheral dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine on postoperative analgesia. We included six randomized controlled trials (354 patients) through a systematic literature search. We found that analgesia duration was comparable between dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine (58.59 min, 95% CI (confidence interval), -  66.13, 183.31 min) with extreme heterogeneity. Secondary outcome was also compared and no significant difference was observed in sensory block onset and duration and motor block duration and also for postoperative nausea and vomiting. It is noteworthy that

Efficacy and safety of tranexamic acid in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Tranexamic acid, as a traditional hemostatic agent, is commonly used to treat or prevent excessive blood loss. However, the role of tranexamic acid in promoting good clinical outcomes and reducing mortality and risk of adverse events during the treatment of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage remains unclear. METHODS: In strict accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and PubMed databases were assessed for randomized controlled trials (published between 1980 and 2021). Data were analyzed using STATA 16.0 and RevMan 5.3. In ad
