Thyroid activity in desert rodents: a mechanism for lowered metabolic rate.

Desert rodents are known to exhibit three different levels of metabolic rate (MR) when related to the mouse-elephant equation. Several species have an MR that is either higher, lower, or similar to that predicted from the equation. The role of thyroid function as a possible mechanism associated with these different MR was examined in 12 species of desert rodents, representing 3 families and 3 different biotic communities. Thyroidal 131I uptake, ratio of neck-to-thigh 131I counts per minute (N/T ratio), thyroxine secretion rate (TSR), and plasma protein binding sites were used as indices of thy

Morphological peculiarities of the deep infratemporal fossa in advanced age.

The main osseous landmarks of the border area between the infratemporal fossa and the para- and retro pharyngeal space are the sphenoidal sp … n the latter were present. The existence of a wide ps bar was noted in all the skulls of herbivora, rodentia, carnivora, and Old World monkeys that were examined, but never in those of the New World monkeys; it is likely that, in the human, this ps bar represents a phylogenetic remnant. In the human dry skull specimens and cadaveric material, the ps ligame …

tidyGenR: tidy multilocus amplicon genotypes in R.

Multiplexed amplicon sequencing has become an important tool in phylogenetics and conservation genetics. Amplicon sequencing reads need to be processed to get final haplotypes. The bioinformatics involved is often limiting for embarking on these kind of projects and there are few tools designed to handle this type of data. tidyGenR is an R package for reproducible multilocus amplicon genotyping workflows from sequencing reads. It provides a modular workflow that starts by demultiplexing loci, variant determination with DADA2, and ends with genotyping. Input data can be raw single-end or paired

Incidence, molecular characterisation and epidemiology of Oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild, 1903) in synanthropic rodent hosts.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Rodents and arthropod vectors transmit zoonotic pathogens like Yersinia pestis and Rickettsia typhi , posing a threat to both veterinary and public health. The primary aim of this study was to record incidence of rat fleas, a vector for plague and murine typhus on synanthropic rodents, their epidemiology and molecular characterization. METHODS: A comprehensive survey of synanthropic rodents viz. Bandicota bengalensis (190), Rattus rattus (201), and Tatera indica (180) across various habitats, including crop fields, poultry farms, fish markets, residential areas, shops,

Rodents as potential reservoirs for toroviruses.

BACKGROUND: Emerging zoonotic viruses pose a significant threat to global health. The order Nidovirales includes diverse viruses, such as coronaviruses, which are well known for their zoonotic potential. Toroviruses are a less-studied genus within Nidovirales primarily associated with gastrointestinal diseases in ungulates, although some evidence suggests their presence in humans. METHODS: We set out to describe full-length genomes of potentially emerging viruses by collecting feces from dozens of small mammals, mainly rodents, captured in different regions of Spain. Viral reads were obtained

Contributions of different host species to the natural transmission of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus in China.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne emerging infectious disease with a reported mortality rate of up to 30% in hospitalized patients. The causative agent, SFTS virus (SFTSV) is maintained in nature through a transmission cycle involving animal hosts and ticks. Therefore, effective control of SFTS in nature environments necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the tick-host circulation patterns that sustain viral persistence. We developed and calibrated mathematical models using seroprevalence survey data collected across China to assess the relative contribu

A human pathogenic hantavirus circulates and is shed in taxonomically diverse rodent reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Orthohantaviruses are negative-sense RNA viruses that can cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in humans. In the United States, Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV) is the primary cause of HCPS, with a fatality rate of 36% and most cases occuring in the southwestern states. The western deer mouse, Peromyscus sonoriensis, is the primary reservoir for SNV; however, it remains unclear if alternative reservoirs exist. RESULTS: We conducted an extensive survey of SNV genetic prevalence in wild-caught small mammal communities throughout New Mexico and observed that 27% of all an

Use of Hidden Markov Models to Identify Behavioral Patterns in Accelerometry Data of Subterranean Rodents in Field Enclosures.

Activity rhythms of laboratory rodents are usually measured by running wheels, and although wheel running activity-or-rest data enable straightforward rhythmic analyses, it provides limited behavioral information. In subterranean rodents (tuco-tucos), we used bio-loggers (accelerometers) to measure activity rhythms in both lab and field conditions, detecting diverse movements that compose activity. However, understanding these different accelerometer-detected activity components requires more complex analytical tools. Here we used supervised hidden Markov models (HMMs) as a machine learning an

Novel human coronavirus in an infant patient with pneumonia, Republic of Korea.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) pose a significant threat to public health, causing a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and outcomes. Beyond precipitating global outbreaks, Human CoVs (HCoVs) are frequently found among patients with respiratory infections. To date, limited attention has been directed towards alphacoronaviruses due to their low prevalence and fatality rates. Nasal swab and serum samples were collected from a paediatric patient, and an epidemiological survey was conducted. Retrospective surveillance investigated the molecular prevalence of CoV in 880 rodents collected in the Republi

Molecular Characterization of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis Regulation in the Manchurian Zokor (Myospalax psilurus) During Seasonal Estrus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Seasonal reproduction in mammals is primarily regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, yet its molecular mechanisms in subterranean rodents living in light-restricted environments remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the transcriptional regulation of the HPO axis during seasonal estrus in the Manchurian zokor (Myospalax psilurus, M. psilurus), a fossorial rodent exhibiting distinct breeding cycles despite perpetual darkness. METHODS: Hypothalamic, pituitary, and ovarian tissues were collected from female zokors during estrus and

The prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella species in wild rodents from South Korea.

Bartonella species, which are globally distributed gram-negative facultative intracellular bacteria, can infect a diverse range of hosts. Rodents are crucial for the maintenance and dissemination of Bartonella spp., several of which are pathogenic to humans. Although Bartonella infections have been studied in various animals, Bartonella genetic diversity in wild rodents and their fleas has not been investigated. This study examined Bartonella prevalence and genetic diversity in wild rodents and fleas from South Korea in 2023-2024. Bartonella was predominantly detected in the rodent species, Ap

Transmembrane pH gradient imaging in rodent glioma models.

A unique feature of the tumor microenvironment is extracellular acidosis in relation to intracellular milieu. Metabolic reprogramming in tumors results in overproduction of H+ ions (and lactate), which are extruded from the cells to support tumor survival and progression. As a result, the transmembrane pH gradient (ΔpH), representing the difference between intracellular pH (pHi) and extracellular pH (pHe), is posited to be larger in tumors compared with normal tissue. Controlling the transmembrane pH difference has promise as a potential therapeutic target in cancer as it plays an important ro

In vivo mitochondria-targeted protection against uterine artery vascular dysfunction and remodelling in rodent hypoxic pregnancy.

Gestational hypoxia adversely affects uterine artery function, increasing complications. However, an effective therapy remains unidentified. Here, we show in rodent uterine arteries that hypoxic pregnancy promotes hypertrophic remodelling, increases constrictor reactivity via protein kinase C signalling, and triggers compensatory dilatation via nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms and stimulation of large conductance Ca2+ -activated K+ -channels. Maternal in vivo oral treatment with the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant MitoQ in hypoxic pregnancy normalises uterine artery reactivity and prevents
