Three-year surveillance of intussusception in children in Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to obtain baseline data on the incidence of intussusception and its association with gastroenteritis in a cross-sectional observational study in children. METHODS: Admissions to all 38 pediatric units in Switzerland because of intussusception were reported to the Swiss Pediatric Surveillance Unit from April 2003 to March 2006. Patient and disease characteristics were assessed prospectively with the use of a standardized questionnaire based on the case definition for intussusception developed by the Brighton Collaboration. Completeness of reporting was verified through

Adenovirus infection: A potential risk for developing intussusception in pediatric patients.

The pathogenesis of intussusception without obvious anatomical leading points remains unclear. The objective of this study was to determine a feasibility of association between certain gastroenteritis viruses and intussusception. This was a prospective cohort study. Forty intussusception cases and 136 acute gastroenteritis controls with comparable age and gender were separately consecutively enrolled and relevant clinical data of both groups were recorded. The clinical specimens collected from all patients were screened for adenovirus, rotavirus, norovirus, and astrovirus by PCR and RT-PCR usi

A case-control study of selected pathogens including verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli in calf diarrhea on an Ontario veal farm.

A case-control study of diarrheal disease in veal calves was conducted over a three month period on a single large veal farm in southern Ontario. One hundred diarrheic calves (cases) were identified by visual examination of their feces. Each case was matched to two nondiarrhetic controls from the same room on the same day, and a fecal sample was obtained from each animal. Fecal consistency of cases and controls was observed daily for one week following sample collection. Control calves which developed diarrhea during that period were excluded from the study. Breed, sex and the date and nature

How the gut microbiome regulates host immune responses to viral vaccines.

The co-evolution of the microbiota and immune system has forged a mutually beneficial relationship. This relationship allows the host to maintain the balance between active immunity to pathogens and vaccines and tolerance to self-antigens and food antigens. In children living in low-income and middle-income countries, undernourishment and repetitive gastrointestinal infections are associated with the failure of oral vaccines. Intestinal dysbiosis associated with these environmental influences, as well as some host-related factors, compromises immune responses and negatively impacts vaccine eff

Evaluating Previous Antibiotic Use as a Risk Factor for Acute Gastroenteritis Among Children in Davidson County, Tennessee, 2014-2015.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies that evaluate the relationship between previous antibiotic use and acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in the pediatric population are currently lacking. METHODS: We analyzed inpatient and outpatient children with AGE and healthy controls from Vanderbilt University Medical Center between December 1, 2014, and November 30, 2015. The following 4 outcome groups were defined: overall AGE, norovirus-associated AGE, rotavirus-associated AGE, and nonnorovirus/nonrotavirus AGE. Multiple logistic regression was performed to evaluate the association between previous antibiotic

[Traveller's diarrhea: which vaccines?].

Diarrheal diseases are a major cause of child morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. It is estimated that diarrheal diseases and typhoid fever cause around 2.5 million deaths per year in the world. Four bacteria and one virus share this responsibility: Shigella spp, Escherichia coli ETEC, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhi and rotavirus. People travelling in countries with high endemicity of diarrhoeal diseases risk facing these four bacteria or the less common rotavirus, which is usually active in infants, even though some cases of diarrhoea due to rotavirus have alread

An investigation of the potential association between gastrointestinal viral and bacterial infection and development of intestinal acute graft versus host disease following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

It is uncertain whether gastrointestinal (GI) infection caused by viral and bacterial pathogens may predispose to gastrointestinal acute Graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD-GI) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (allo-HSCT). We investigated the potential association between detection of enteropathogenic viruses or bacteria in stools and subsequent occurrence of aGvHD-GI in a cohort of 121 allo-HSCT patients. Eighty-six out of 121 patients (71%) had acute diarrhea and underwent screening for primary GI pathogens by molecular diagnostic methods. One or more GI pathogens wer

Risk factors for neonatal calf diarrhoea and enteropathogen shedding in New Zealand dairy farms.

To investigate the risk factors for neonatal calf diarrhoea, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 97 New Zealand dairy farms. Faecal specimens from 1283 calves were scored as liquid, semi-solid or solid, and analysed for bovine rotavirus (BRV) and coronavirus (BCV), enterotoxigenic K99(+)Escherichia coli (K99), Salmonella spp. and Cryptosporidium parvum. Calf- and farm-level data were collected by means of a questionnaire and the odds of liquid faeces calculated using mixed effects logistic regression models. Among the infectious agents, only C. parvum (odds ratio [OR] = 2.6; 95% confidenc

Dietary supplementation with Bacillus-based probiotic improves gut health in the weaned piglets challenged by rotavirus.

BACKGROUND: As probiotics, Bacillus strains may regulate some physiological functions in animals. This study aimed to evaluate whether dietary supplementation with a Bacillus-based probiotic could alleviate gut damage induced by rotavirus (RV) infection in piglets. Twenty-four piglets were randomly assigned into 2 groups fed with the basal diet (n = 16) and the diet containing 109 colony-forming unit Bacillus spores/kg (n = 8). On d 8, 8 piglets fed with the diet supplemented with Bacillus-based probiotic and 8 piglets fed with basal diet were orally infused with RV, while the residue piglets

A novel double antibody sandwich quantitative ELISA for detecting porcine epidemic diarrhea virus infection.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), a contagious intestinal disease caused by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), has caused significant economic losses to the global pig farming industry due to its rapid course and spread and its high mortality among piglets. In this study, we prepared rabbit polyclonal antibody and monoclonal antibody 6C12 against the PEDV nucleocapsid (N) protein using the conserved and antigenic PEDV N protein as an immunogen. A double-antibody sandwich quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-qELISA) was established to detect PEDV using rabbit polyclonal a

Impact of the birth's season on the development of celiac disease in Italy.

UNLABELLED: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated systemic disorder induced by a trigger factor in genetically susceptible individuals. There is emerging evidence about the impact of the month of birth on the development of several autoimmune diseases. Our aim was to investigate whether, in Italian CD children, the season of birth is associated with development of CD later in life. We report a survey conducted at two Italian referral centers for CD in Rome and Bari. The CD database was created to enable retrospective examination of the data of all the consecutive patients, born between 200

The Nontoxic Cholera B Subunit Is a Potent Adjuvant for Intradermal DC-Targeted Vaccination.

CD4+ T cells are major players in the immune response against several diseases; including AIDS, leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, influenza and cancer. Their activation has been successfully achieved by administering antigen coupled with antibodies, against DC-specific receptors in combination with adjuvants. Unfortunately, most of the adjuvants used so far in experimental models are unsuitable for human use. Therefore, human DC-targeted vaccination awaits the description of potent, yet nontoxic adjuvants. The nontoxic cholera B subunit (CTB) can be safely used in humans and it has the potential to

Stool multiplex PCR assay versus conventional stool tests for detecting gastrointestinal infection as a cause for flare of inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a flare can be due to natural history of disease or due to gastrointestinal infection. Infection is conventionally diagnosed by stool microscopy and culture. Stool multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay or Biofire® FilmArray® GI Panel is a sensitive and rapid test for detecting infection, but is expensive; its impact on management and cost-effectiveness has not been studied in IBD. AIMS: To compare stool PCR assay and conventional tests during IBD flare for detection of infection, impact of detection on treatment and cost-effectiveness

Source attribution of foodborne pathogens in the Netherlands using structured expert elicitation.

Foodborne pathogens represent a significant public health burden. Quantifying the relative importance of various potential sources of foodborne infection is challenging due to data scarcity and uncertainty in empirical studies. Structured expert judgment (SEJ) provides a valuable methodological alternative to gain insights into source attribution of foodborne pathogens. We conducted a SEJ study to attribute human cases of 26 foodborne pathogens in the Netherlands to seven major transmission pathways, 20 food groups, and two animal groups, in a typical post-COVID19 year, using Cooke's classical

Development of an Indirect ELISA Based on the PEDV S Protein and Evaluation of Its Correlation With Neutralizing Antibody and Immune Protection.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an enteric coronavirus that infects pigs of all ages. Notably, neonatal piglets (≤7 days old) in naïve herds can experience case fatality rates approaching 100%, with hallmark clinical signs of vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, thereby representing a major threat to swine herd health. Serum PEDV-specific IgG serves as a key serological marker of vaccine-induced herd immunity. Accordingly, we developed an indirect ELISA (iELISA) using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell-expressed recombinant PEDV spike (S) protein as the coating antigen. Checkerboard ti
