A test of central coherence theory: linguistic processing in high-functioning adults with autism or Asperger syndrome: is local coherence impaired?

Central coherence theory (Frith, U., 1989. Autism: Explaining the Enigma. Blackwell, Oxford.) is addressed by exploring linguistic processing in normally intelligent adults with either autism or Asperger syndrome, to test whether local coherence is impaired. Local coherence is the ability to make contextually meaningful connections between linguistic information in short-term or working memory. Experiment 1 demonstrated that individuals with an autism spectrum condition were less likely to use the sentence context spontaneously to provide the context-appropriate pronunciation of a homograph. Relationship between language and fluency in children with developmental language disorders.

The present investigation addresses two primary hypotheses: (a) that a subset of children with developmental language disorders exhibits significantly more disfluencies than other children with language disorders and (b) that differences between the disfluent and nondisfluent groups observed in fluency may be related to differences in language deficits. Spontaneous language samples from 60 preschool children with developmental language disorders were analyzed for frequency and type of disfluencies. Comparisons of the frequency of disfluencies across subjects revealed that a subset of 10 subjec

Comparison of paragraph comprehension test scores with reading versus listening-reading and multiple-choice versus nominal recall administration techniques: justification for the bypass approach.

Eight groups of learning disabled children (N = 100), categorized by the clinical Lexical Paradigm as good readers or poor readers, were individually administered the Gilmore Oral Reading Test, Form D, by one of four input/retrieval methods: (1) the standardized method of administration in which the child reads each paragraph aloud and then answers five questions relating to the paragraph [read/recall method]; (2) the child reads each paragraph aloud and then for each question selects the correct answer from among three choices read by the examiner [read/choice method]; (3) the examiner reads

Retrieval-grounded multilingual LLM assistance for island smallholder farmers.

BACKGROUND: Smallholder farmers on remote, depopulating islands have limited access to advisory services, and their locally specific agronomic knowledge, often expressed in regional dialect, is poorly represented in the corpora on which large language models are trained. A general-purpose chatbot therefore answers local questions fluently but unreliably. A conversational artificial intelligence assistant, Falco eleonorae, was developed for the farmers and cooperatives of Kythera and Antikythera, Greece. METHODS: The assistant is a thin Backend-for-Frontend proxy in front of a managed, geospat

Speech-to-Speech Voice-Cloning Care (SVCC) for improving ICU-acquired anxiety for critically ill patients in a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China: protocol of a randomised, controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive care unit (ICU) visiting restrictions in hospitals, implemented due to infection control and other factors, limited contact between patients and family members, affecting patients' well-being and clinical outcomes. With the evolution of voice-cloning based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it has become possible for health providers to communicate with critically ill patients using highly similar synthetic voices of their loved ones during ICU care. This current randomised, controlled trial will explore the effect of voice-cloning care on improving mental heal

Gesture recognition for hearing impaired people using an ensemble of deep learning models with improving beluga whale optimization-based hyperparameter tuning.

Sign language (SL) is the linguistics of speech and hearing-impaired individuals. The hand gesture is the primary model employed in SL by speech and hearing-challenged people to talk with themselves and ordinary persons. At present, hand gesture detection plays a vital part, and it is commonly employed in numerous applications worldwide. Hand gesture detection systems can aid in transmission between machines and humans by aiding these sets of people. Machine learning (ML) is a subdivision of artificial intelligence (AI), which concentrates on the growth of a method. The main challenge in hand

Construct Validity of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Bulbar Dysfunction Index-Remote.

PURPOSE: The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Bulbar Dysfunction Index-Remote (ALSBDI-R) is a clinician-administered tool designed to assess bulbar dysfunction remotely in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This study aimed to evaluate the construct validity of the ALSBDI-R by examining its correlation with established clinical measures and its ability to discriminate among different bulbar disease severities. METHOD: A total of 92 patients with ALS were recruited from two multidisciplinary clinics. Participants were assessed using the ALSBDI-R, the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Clinical Advice by Voice Assistants on Postpartum Depression: Cross-Sectional Investigation Using Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Cortana.

BACKGROUND: A voice assistant (VA) is inanimate audio-interfaced software augmented with artificial intelligence, capable of 2-way dialogue, and increasingly used to access health care advice. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common perinatal mood disorder with an annual estimated cost of $14.2 billion. Only a small percentage of PPD patients seek care due to lack of screening and insufficient knowledge of the disease, and this is, therefore, a prime candidate for a VA-based digital health intervention. OBJECTIVE: In order to understand the capability of VAs, our aim was to assess VA response

The Cambridge Mindreading (CAM) Face-Voice Battery: Testing complex emotion recognition in adults with and without Asperger syndrome.

Adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) can recognise simple emotions and pass basic theory of mind tasks, but have difficulties recognising more complex emotions and mental states. This study describes a new battery of tasks, testing recognition of 20 complex emotions and mental states from faces and voices. The battery was given to males and females with AS and matched controls. Results showed the AS group performed worse than controls overall, on emotion recognition from faces and voices and on 12/20 specific emotions. Females recognised faces better than males regardless of diagnosis, and males

Auditory language comprehension in children with developmental dyslexia: evidence from event-related brain potentials.

In the present study, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to compare auditory sentence comprehension in 16 children with developmental dyslexia (age 9-12 years) and unimpaired controls matched on age, sex, and nonverbal intelligence. Passive sentences were presented, which were either correct or contained a syntactic violation (phrase structure) or a semantic violation (selectional restriction). In an overall sentence correctness judgment task, both control and dyslexic children performed well. In the ERPs, control children and dyslexic children demonstrated a similar N400 componen

A follow-up study of 45 patients with elective mutism.

Forty five patients (23 boys and 22 girls) with elective mutism (8.7 +/- 3.6 years old), who were referred to a university department and a child guidance clinic within a 15-year-period, were followed up on average 12 years later. For 41 of them, sufficient information could be obtained at follow-up, and 31 patients could be investigated personally. At follow-up, an interview and a standardized psychopathological examination were carried out as well as two standardized biographic inventories. The main results were: 1) a high load of individual and family psychopathology was characteristic of t

A study of the long term results achieved by the Gillies Fry procedure.

Renewed interest in delayed closure for cleft palate subjects revealed that no evaluation had been undertaken of patients who underwent the original Gillies Fry procedure. In the present investigation, 10 subjects operated upon prior to 1948 according to the Gillies Fry recommendations were evaluated for facial development, occlusal relationship, speech performance and velopharyngeal seal. Comparison of the cephalometric findings with accepted norms and examination of study casts gave encouraging results for facial and occlusal development. Speech quality covered a wide range of attainment, th

Presbycusis. When hearing wanes, is amplification the answer?

Many persons with sensorineural hearing loss can benefit from wearing a hearing aid. Of the approximately 1 million hearing aids sold in the United States in 1983, more than half were purchased by persons over age 65. Persons with presbycusis should have audiologic and otologic evaluations to determine whether medical or surgical treatment is possible and, if not, whether they can benefit from hearing aid use. The patient can better assess the benefits of hearing aid use by using an appropriately selected hearing aid on a trial basis. Patients and their families also benefit from receiving sug

Children with phenylketonuria treated early: basic audiological and electrophysiological evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) can exhibit deficits in executive functions, intelligence, attention, visual-spatial processing abilities, and efficiency stemming presumably from deficient neurotransmitter synthesis, even when the disorder is diagnosed and treated early. Basic audiological and electrophysiological evaluations were used to examine the peripheral and central auditory pathways of children with early-treated PKU, who followed adequate versus inadequate diets. Results were compared with those of age-matched children without PKU. DESIGN: The control group include

Speaking from the heart: a story about innovation, resilience, and infinite possibilities with AAC.

Communication is the cornerstone of human connection, impacting everything from our personal relationships to our professional success. This concept became heartbreakingly real for me when I was diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the age of 25. The rapid decline of my speech left me feeling all alone and isolated. After experimenting with AAC options, I yearned for a system that was lightweight, portable and stylish. This sparked my entrepreneurial spirit, leading me to assemble components catering to my diverse interests and professional pursuits. Over the years, I have built multiple AAC

Neural markers of speech processing during inattentional deafness☆.

Cognitive scientists have long debated the capabilities of non-conscious perception, defined as the level of processing of external stimuli that people do not consciously experience. While much is known about non-conscious visual perception, the auditory modality has received less focus. Here, we examine the level of processing for audible and intelligible spoken words that participants did not notice while performing another difficult visual task. Using repeated occurrences of such inattentional deafness and awareness probes, we measure the non-conscious processing of undetected words. In two
