We retrospectively evaluated the clinical and imaging features of 6 patients with bone hydatid disease confirmed by surgery and pathological examination. Among the 6 patients, 2 were infected with Echinococcosis granulosus metacestode and 4 were infected with E. multilocularis metacestode. The 2 cases with cystic echinococcosis were diagnosed by computed tomographic (CT) examination, and other 4 cases were diagnosed by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. On the initial evaluation, 1 case each was misdiagnosed as a giant cell tumor or neurogenic tumor, and 2 were misdiagnosed as tuberculosis. The

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals are particularly susceptible to several central nervous system infections: human cytomegalovirus, which may cause encephalitis, ventriculitis, polyradiculitis, or polyradiculomyelitis; Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can cause meningitis or space-occupying lesions; and Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum (T. pallidum), which affects the meninges, cerebrospinal fluid, cranial nerves, and vasculature in early neurosyphilis, and additionally the brain and spinal cord parenchyma in late neurosyphilis. Central nervous system cytomegalovir

Although osteoarticular tuberculosis is usually presented as monoarthritis of the large, weight-bearing joints (predominantly hip, knee or ankle joint), or in the form of spinal disease, it is rarely seen as oligoarthritis. In this article, we present case history of a female patient with tuberculous oligoarthritis of the right talocruraljoint and left talocalcaneal joint. A 77-year-old female patient was admitted to our department due to the symptoms of painful and swollen right talocrural joint and left talocalcaneal joint accompanied with fever, general weakness and night sweating. To test the hypothesis that T lymphocytes sensitized to central nervous system (CNS) antigens may quantitatively induce more demyelination in neural tissue than T cells sensitized to non-CNS antigens, we established T cell lines specific for myelin basic protein (MBP) or the purified protein derivative (PPD) of M. tuberculosis. The potential of T cells to cause myelin pathology was determined by measuring the activity of the myelin-associated enzyme 2'-3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) in organotypic cultures of syngeneic spinal cord after incubation with the T cell lines. The

Myelopathy in central nervous system tuberculosis is notorious for poor outcomes, determined by the severity of inflammation and cord level involved. Acute-onset quadriplegia or paraplegia in these cases represents a neuro-emergency. We report a young female with disseminated tuberculosis who presented with acute onset flaccid quadriparesis with loss of bladder and bowel function. Imaging helped identify the extensive involvement of the neuraxis. We propose that, in addition to anti-tubercular therapy, high-dose corticosteroids such as pulse methylprednisolone may result in a meaningful improv

Although rare in the western world; psoas abscess is a frequent finding in Indian sub continent associated with Pott's spine. Untreated Pott's spine may lead to various sequelae like destruction of vertebra, kyphosis, paraplageia etc which in modern world is amenable to anti-tubercular drugs and surgical management. We report a case of untreated Pott's spine with bilateral calcified psoas abscess with kyphosis. To the best of our knowledge no such case of complete bilateral calcified psoas abscesses has been reported earlier. We want to discuss this case with relevant literature review and its

Tuberculosis (TB) has shown a resurgence in nonendemic populations in recent years and accounts for 8 million deaths annually in the world. Central nervous system involvement is one of the most serious forms of this infection, acting as a prominent cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. The rising number of cases in developed countries is mostly attributed to factors such as the pandemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and increased migration in a globalized world. Mycobacterium TB is responsible for almost all cases of tubercular infection in the central nervous syste

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to find out if transpedicular decancellation osteotomy (TDO) is recommendable for neurological recovery in patients with myelopathy due to tubercular rigid kyphosis. We have analyzed the pattern of recovery seen after the surgery and also made an effort to correlate the neurological recovery with preoperative clinical and radiological features.
METHODS: The clinical parameters used were (1) ASIA impairment scale for motor and sensory function, (2) sphincter dysfunction score, (3) time duration from the onset of myelopathy till the date of surgery, and (4)

A 78-year-old woman seen in June 2005 for chest abnormal shadows after 3 months of steroid therapy for vasculitis associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies was found in chest computed tomography (CT) revealed bronchiectasis and small nodules in the right middle lobe and left lingula. Sputum cultures were positive for Mycobacterium intracellulare. Based on a diagnosis of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacteriosis, the woman underwent antimycobacterial therapy with clarithromycin, rifampicin, and ethambutol hydrochloride for 10 months. She was then admitted in June 2009 with right

Pott's puffy tumor is an infrequent entity characterized by subperiosteal abscess associated with frontal bone osteomyelitis. It is usually seen as a complication of frontal sinusitis. Although cases, in patients of all ages have been reported, teenagers are the most frequently affected. Despite modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, 9 new cases in children, have been published in the last 7 years. This paper describes the case of 13-year-old boy with subperiosteal abscess resulting from exacerbation of chronic frontal sinusitis. Complete resolution occurred with an intensive antibiotic re

A Somatom Plus 4 spiral computed tomograph was used to examine 40 patients with purulent spondylitis and 8 patients with tuberculous spondylitis. Analysis of the primary examination, postoperative status, and follow-up of patients on medical therapy identified the main signs of an inflammatory process from a great variety of the computed tomographic (CT) signs of a lesion. They made it possible not only to reveal the inflammatory nature of a lesion, but also to differentiate purulent and tuberculous spondylitis. The main CT signs that allow a purulent spondylitis to be differentiated from tube

Spinal arachnoiditis is one of the common and disabling complication of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). We focused on early diagnosis of spinal arachnoiditis by spinal MRI in asymptomatic patients in whom neurological examination was normal. We studied 16 patients with a diagnosis of probable or highly probable TBM with symptoms for less than 1 month; three had radiological evidence of spinal arachnoiditis. High cerebrospinal fluid protein appeared to be a risk factor for development of spinal arachnoiditis. MRI is sensitive to detect early spinal arachnoiditis. Earlier diagnosis may be helpful

Increased intracranial pressure was found in 36 of 49 children with tuberculous meningitis. Four patients who presented with acute onset died early. Eight patients with obstructive hydrocephalus were treated surgically. In the 24 patients who had communicating hydrocephalus and were treated with acetazolamide and repeated lumbar punctures, treatment was successful in all but two, in whom shunt surgery was needed.

An abscess of the left thigh due to a fistula between a tuberculous 5th lumbar vertebra, the sigmoid colon and the muscles and subcutaneous tissues of the left thigh is described. This appears to be a unique occurrence and was only diagnosed at post-mortem. The treatment and diagnosis are discussed.

Two cases of Salmonella spondylitis with unusual features appeared in patients who have no sickle cell disease and no history of typhoid fever. One case presented with paraparesis, was misdiagnosed and originally treated for Pott's disease. The other case was diagnosed correctly by specific laboratory tests, but failed to respond to the conventionally accepted conservative antibiotic treatment and required surgical excision and drainage. Salmonella spondylitis with paraparesis may not have been reported heretofore.
