Antibiomania: A Rare Case of Metronidazole-Induced Mania.

Metronidazole is a very commonly used drug for the treatment of ailments caused by bacteria and parasites. It can treat a vast array of conditions like rosacea, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), liver abscess, bedsores, etc. Metronidazole comes with generic side-effects like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, metallic taste, and also rare side-effects like paresthesia, syncope, cerebellar symptoms, psychosis but mania is a rare side-effect. Here, we present a case of metronidazole induced mania in a 50-year-old male with no past medical history who initially presented with a complaint of mild fe

Behavioral Plasticity of Audiovisual Perception: Rapid Recalibration of Temporal Sensitivity but Not Perceptual Binding Following Adult-Onset Hearing Loss.

The ability to accurately integrate or bind stimuli from more than one sensory modality is highly dependent on the features of the stimuli, such as their intensity and relative timing. Previous studies have demonstrated that the ability to perceptually bind stimuli is impaired in various clinical conditions such as autism, dyslexia, schizophrenia, as well as aging. However, it remains unknown if adult-onset hearing loss, separate from aging, influences audiovisual temporal acuity. In the present study, rats were trained using appetitive operant conditioning to perform an audiovisual temporal o

A novel swine model of subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced cerebral vasospasm.

OBJECTIVE: One of the most serious complications following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) secondary to symptomatic vasospasm. An animal model mimicking post SAH vasospasm is essential for enabling the translation of newer technologies from the conceptual phase to animal studies, and eventually to clinical trials. Various animal models of DCI following SAH have been reported, with canine models being the most common. Due to the similarity of the swine cardiovascular system and its dimensions to the human's system, the main objective of this study was to establi

A 7-week, randomized, double-blind trial of olanzapine/fluoxetine combination versus lamotrigine in the treatment of bipolar I depression.

OBJECTIVE: Determine the efficacy and tolerability of olanzapine/fluoxetine combination (OFC) for treatment of acute bipolar I depression compared with lamotrigine. METHOD: The 7-week, acute phase of a randomized, double-blind study compared OFC (6/25, 6/50, 12/25, or 12/50 mg/day; N = 205) with lamotrigine ([LMG] titrated to 200 mg/day; N = 205) in patients with DSM-IV-diagnosed bipolar I disorder, depressed. The study was conducted from November 2003 to August 2004. RESULTS: Completion rates were similar between treatments (OFC, 66.8% vs. LMG, 65.4%; p = .835). OFC-treated patients had sig

Nutritional factors in the etiology of the premenstrual tension syndromes.

The premenstrual symptom complex many women experience in a moderate to severe form can be divided into four subgroups. Because there is more than one syndrome and nervous tension is one of the most common symptoms, the term premenstrual tension syndromes (PMTS) is used. The most common subgroup, PMT-A, consists of premenstrual anxiety, irritability and nervous tension, sometimes expressed in behavior patterns detrimental to self, family and society. Elevated blood estrogen and low progesterone have been observed in this subgroup. Administration of vitamin B6 at doses of 200-800 mg/day reduces

Effects of amino acids methionine, lysine, and taurine on feed intake and mRNA expression of appetite-related neuropeptides in layer-type chicks.

Amino acids in the brain modulate eating behavior and energy balance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of DL-methionine (DL-Met), l-lysine monohydrochloride (L-Lys-HCl), and taurine (Tau) on feed intake and the mRNA expression levels of appetite-related hypothalamic neuropeptides in chicks. DL-Met, l-Lys-HCl, or Tau was intracerebroventricularly (ICV) administered to 5-day-old layer-type chicks, and the feed intake was recorded until 1 h post-injection. Quantitative PCR was performed to determine the hypothalamic mRNA expression levels of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and its

Neurodegenerative pathologies associated with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in a community-based autopsy cohort.

In addition to the memory disorders and global cognitive impairment that accompany neurodegenerative diseases, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) commonly impair quality of life and complicate clinical management. To investigate clinical-pathological correlations of BPSD, we analyzed data from autopsied participants from the community-based University of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Research Center longitudinal cohort (n = 368 research volunteers met inclusion criteria, average age at death 85.4 years). Data assessing BPSD were obtained approximately annually, including p

Hypophagia induced by intracerebroventricular injection of apelin-13 is mediated via CRF1/CRF2 and MC3/MC4 receptors in neonatal broiler chicken.

Previous studies have shown the role of apelin and its receptors in the regulation of food intake. In the present study, we investigate the mediating role of melanocortin, corticotropin, and neuropeptide Y systems in apelin-13- induced food intake in broilers. Eight trials were run in the current investigation to ascertain the relationships between the aforementioned systems and apelin-13 on food intake and behavioral changes after apelin-13 administration. In experiment 1, hens were given an intracerebroventricular administration of a solution for control in addition to apelin-13 (0.25, 0.5,

Concise Associated Symptoms Tracking scale: a brief self-report and clinician rating of symptoms associated with suicidality.

OBJECTIVE: US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings recommend monitoring negative symptoms associated with the initiation of antidepressant medications as these symptoms may interfere with full recovery and pose safety concerns. There is currently no brief, reliable rating instrument for assessing treatment-emergent, negative symptoms. We evaluated the psychometric properties of 2 versions of the newly developed 17-item Concise Associated Symptom Tracking (CAST) scale, the CAST Clinician Rating (CAST-C) and CAST Self-Rated (CAST-SR), which are brief instruments designed to measure the 5

A prospective naturalistic study of 326 panic-agoraphobic patients treated with antidepressants.

OBJECTIVE: How far the results of randomized controlled studies apply to everyday care cannot be judged without regular measurements of outcomes in daily practice. We report on systematic data from a 3-year naturalistic prospective study on panic disorder-agoraphobic (PDA) patients treated with antidepressants in a setting of routine clinical practice. Our aim is to describe the evolution of PDA in relation to the treatments employed, and to explore demographic and clinical characteristics that might be predictive of outcome. METHODS: 326 DSM-III-R PDA patients treated with antidepressants in

Corticotropin releasing hormone: relevance to normal physiology and to the pathophysiology and differential diagnosis of hypercortisolism and adrenal insufficiency.

CRH is a 41 amino acid peptide first isolated from ovine and subsequently from rat and human hypothalami. We have conducted a series of clinical studies with oCRH and hCRH in volunteers and patients with various disorders of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function. In volunteers, it was demonstrated that hCRH administration produced ACTH and cortisol responses which closely mimic naturalistically occurring secretory episodes. This data, as well as the demonstration that pulsatile hCRH can reestablish normal ACTH and cortisol secretion in patients with hypothalamic CRH deficiency, strongly argu

Obesity and Sex-Related Associations With Differential Effects of Sucralose vs Sucrose on Appetite and Reward Processing: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Nonnutritive sweeteners (NNSs) are used as an alternative to nutritive sweeteners to quench desire for sweets while reducing caloric intake. However, studies have shown mixed results concerning the effects of NNSs on appetite, and the associations between sex and obesity with reward and appetitive responses to NNS compared with nutritive sugar are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine neural reactivity to different types of high-calorie food cues (ie, sweet and savory), metabolic responses, and eating behavior following consumption of sucralose (NNS) vs sucrose (nutritive sugar) among he

Gαi/o-coupled Htr2c in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus antagonizes the anorectic effect of serotonin agents.

The anorexigenic effect of serotonergic compounds has largely been attributed to activation of serotonin 2C receptors (Htr2cs). Using mouse genetic models in which Htr2c can be selectively deleted or restored (in Htr2c-null mice), we investigate the role of Htr2c in forebrain Sim1 neurons. Unexpectedly, we find that Htr2c acts in these neurons to promote food intake and counteract the anorectic effect of serotonergic appetite suppressants. Furthermore, Htr2c marks a subset of Sim1 neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH). Chemogenetic activation of these neurons in adul

Long-acting octreotide treatment causes a sustained decrease in ghrelin concentrations but does not affect weight, behaviour and appetite in subjects with Prader-Willi syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Ghrelin is secreted primarily by the stomach and circulates as both acylated and desacyl ghrelin. Acylated (but not desacyl) ghrelin stimulates appetite. Both concentrations are elevated in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), suggesting that ghrelin may contribute to hyperphagia and overweight in these subjects. We evaluated whether long-acting octreotide (Oct) decreases acylated and desacyl ghrelin concentrations, body mass, appetite and compulsive behaviour towards food in adolescents with PWS. DESIGN: A 56-week prospective, randomized, cross-over trial. METHODS: Nine subjects with PWS

Definition and outcome of a curriculum to prevent disordered eating and body-shaping drug use.

Almost one half of male and female students participate in high school-sponsored athletics, and high school also is a time when classroom health promotion curricula are less effective. The Athletes Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids is a sport team-centered drug-use prevention program for male high school athletes, which has been shown to reduce alcohol and illicit drug use. Just as anabolic steroid use is associated with male athletes, female sport participants may be at a greater risk for disordered eating and body-shaping drug use. Extending sport team-centered programs to young women

Characteristics of BDNF-induced weight loss.

There is evidence that central infusion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) induces weight loss in rats. We have begun to investigate the physiological basis for BDNF-induced weight loss by assessing its relationship to (a) appetite, (b) serum indices of metabolic and renal toxicity, and (c) brain monoamine activity in areas associated with feeding or motor function. BDNF (0-6 microgram/day) was infused into the lateral ventricle (LV) of male Long-Evans rats for 14 days. Body weight and food intake were monitored throughout infusion and recovery periods. BDNF induced severe, dose-depen

Dietary characteristics of community-dwelling older adults with poor appetite: a cross-sectional analysis.

RATIONALE: Poor appetite is considered a key factor in the development of malnutrition, a link that can be explained by alterations in dietary intake. Given the limited data on dietary characteristics in community-dwelling older adults with poor appetite, the present study aimed to examine whether poor appetite is associated with lower nutrient intake and more unfavourable food choices. METHODS: In 569 participants of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam aged ≥70 years appetite was assessed using the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire and dichotomised into normal (>14) and poor (

Cholecystokinin system is involved in the anorexigenic effect of peripherally applied palmitoylated prolactin-releasing peptide in fasted mice.

Prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP) has been proposed to mediate the central satiating effects of cholecystokinin (CCK) through the vagal CCK1 receptor. PrRP acts as an endogenous ligand of G protein-coupled receptor 10 (GPR10), which is expressed at the highest levels in brain areas related to food intake regulation, e.g., the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN) and nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). The NTS and PVN are also significantly activated after peripheral CCK administration. The aim of this study was to determine whether the endogenous PrRP neuronal system in the brain is in
