Micronutrients and their supplementation in chronic cardiac failure. An update beyond theoretical perspectives.

Physicians' use of micronutrients to improve symptoms or outcomes in chronic illness has until recently been guided by limited data on the actions of individual agents in vitro or in animal studies. However several recently published clinical trials have provided information about which groups of patients are likely to benefit from which combination of micronutrients. Patients with chronic cardiac failure (CCF), particularly elderly individuals, have several reasons to be deficient in micronutrients including reduced intake, impaired gastrointestinal absorption and increased losses on the back

Nutrition and bone disease in the dog and cat.

The most commonly encountered nutritional bone disease is nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism. This is primarily of importance in the dog but is occasionally seen in kittens, particularly of the Siamese breed, and is often associated with the feeding of owner compiled, meat-rich diets. Classic rickets is now a rare clinical entity. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is regularly seen in the larger breeds of dog and the aetiology remains obscure. Hypervitaminosis A associated with liver-rich diets is often encountered in the cat. Hypovitaminosis A has been described but its true clinical signifi

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agent hyporesponsiveness.

Approximately 5-10% of patients with chronic kidney disease demonstrate hyporesponsiveness to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA), defined as a continued need for greater than 300 IU/kg per week erythropoietin or 1.5 mug/kg per week darbepoetin administered by the subcutaneous route. Such hyporesponsiveness contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality and health-care economic burden in chronic kidney disease and represents an important diagnostic and management challenge. The commonest causes of ESA resistance are non-compliance, absolute or functional iron deficiency and inflammation

Beyond deficiency: The emerging health risks of excess iron.

ObjectiveTo examine the systemic biological effects of excess dietary iron and elevated hemoglobin in the context of the 2024 World Health Organization revision of anemia thresholds. This study integrates experimental evidence from BALB/c mice with previously proposed diagnostic indices (SF/TSAT and SF×TSAT) to distinguish iron overload from inflammation.MethodsThis study is based on an experimental murine model, with human evidence incorporated to provide contextual interpretation. BALB/c mice were exposed to graded oral iron supplementation, and hematocrit and glycemia were evaluated across

Small-Sized Nanophosphorus Has a Positive Impact on the Performance of Fenugreek Plants under Soil-Water Deficit Stress: A Case Study under Field Conditions.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient necessary for plant growth, development, and reproduction. Two field experiments were carried out in 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 on P-deficient soil to evaluate the impact of foliar fertilization with nanophosphorus (nP) on growth, yield, and physio-biochemical indices, as well as trigonelline content of fenugreek plants under deficient irrigation (dI) stress (a deficit of 20 and 40% of crop evapotranspiration; dI-20 and dI-40). The growth and yield traits, leaf integrity (relative water content and membrane stability index), photosynthetic pigment cont

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy and complex III deficiency associated with a stop-codon mutation in the cytochrome b gene.

We have reinvestigated a young woman, originally reported by us in 1983, who presented with exercise intolerance and lactic acidosis associated with severe deficiency of complex III and who responded to therapy with menadione and ascorbate. Gradually, she developed symptoms of a mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Immunocytochemistry of serial sections of muscle showed a mosaic of fibers that reacted poorly with antibodies to subunits of complex III but reacted normally with antibodies to subunits of complexes I, II, or IV, suggesting a mutation of mtDNA. These findings demonstrate the diagnostic

Nutritional status of elderly Chinese vegetarians.

AIM: To study the nutritional status of elderly Chinese vegetarians. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Dietary intake (using the 24-h recall method), anthropometric indices and some nutritional laboratory parameters were studied in 131 elderly Chinese vegetarian women with a mean age of 81 years. Data from age- and sex-matched omnivore subjects from previous elderly surveys were used for comparison. RESULTS: Total energy, fat and protein calorie, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin intakes were lower in vegetarians than in non-vegetarians, while carbohydrate calorie, calcium, potassium, retinol equivalent an

Retinal pigment epithelial glycosaminoglycan metabolism: intracellular versus extracellular pathways. In vitro studies in normal and diseased cells.

The synthesis and turnover of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in different fractions of cultured feline retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) were characterized. In one method of fractionation, trypsin was used to separate the extracellular components (referred to as trypsin-soluble glycocalyx) from the intracellular components. As a second method, the basal extracellular matrix (basal ECM) was separated from the rest of the GAGs (cell-associated GAGs) by extracting the cell layer with NH4OH. The incorporation of 35SO4 into cetylpyridinium chloride-precipitable GAGs in the cell-associated and the intrace

MicorRNA528 Contributes to Rice Resistance against Herbivorous Insects.

Rice production is chronically threatened by the piercing‑sucking brown planthopper (BPH) and the chewing striped stem borer (SSB). Although BPH‑resistance genes have been cloned, no endogenous SSB‑resistance gene is known, and characterized pest‑responsive microRNAs mostly confer pest‑specific rather than broad‑spectrum resistance. Here we show that the monocot‑conserved miR528 acts as a negative regulator of rice resistance against both BPH and SSB: its downregulation by pest feeding, together with genetic evidence from overexpression, silencing, knockout and OsAO‑related lines, demonstrates

Micronutrient Status in Diabetic Patients with Foot Ulcers.

Objective: To explore the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in patients with diabetic foot ulcers and correlate this with foot disease severity and other clinical factors. Approach: Prospective cohort study of diabetic patients with foot ulcers seen in multidisciplinary foot clinics across Adelaide or admitted to the Vascular Surgery Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital between February 2017 and September 2018. A total of 131 patients were included in the study. Plasma serum levels of vitamins A, C, D, and E, copper, zinc, and ferritin were measured. Demographic and clinical data, includ
