Mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy in patients with anxiety disorders: a case series.

The present study is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (MBCBT) for reducing cognitive and somatic anxiety and modifying dysfunctional cognitions in patients with anxiety disorders. A single case design with pre- and post-assessment was adopted. Four patients meeting the specified inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited for the study. Three patients received a primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), while the fourth patient was diagnosed with Panic Disorder. Patients were assessed on the Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety

Profiles of Family Caregivers for Patients with Dementia in China: Implications for Tailored Intervention Development.

OBJECTIVES: To identify psychological profiles of Chinese dementia caregivers and examine how socio-demographic factors influence high-risk profiles. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 209 primary family caregivers were assessed using validated scales measuring caregiver stress, negative emotions, and cognitive/affective empathy. Latent profile analysis classified caregivers based on these measures, and multinomial logistic regression identified predictors of profile group. RESULTS: Four profiles emerged: (1) Rational (7%: low stress/negative emotions, high cognitive empathy); (2) Adapt

Do Cognitive Abilities Influence Physical and Mental Fatigue in Patients with Chronic Pain after Walking According to a Clinical Guideline for Physical Exercise?

The objective of this study is to explore the mediator role of cognitive fusion and chronic pain acceptance on the effects that the walking pattern, following an established clinical guideline for physical exercise, can have on fatigue (physical and mental) in patients with chronic pain. The sample consisted of a total of 231 women with fibromyalgia with a mean age of 56.91 years (Standard Deviation SD = 9.58 years, range 30-78 years). The results show a significant indirect effect of the walking pattern on both physical and mental fatigue through cognitive fusion and chronic pain acceptance.

Characterization of cognitive deficits in mice with an alternating hemiplegia-linked mutation.

Cognitive impairment is a prominent feature in a range of different movement disorders. Children with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood are prone to developmental delay, with deficits in cognitive functioning becoming progressively more evident as they grow older. Heterozygous mutations of the ATP1A3 gene, encoding the Na+,K+-ATPase α3 subunit, have been identified as the primary cause of Alternating Hemiplegia. Heterozygous Myshkin mice have an amino acid change (I810N) in Na+,K+-ATPase α3 that is also found in Alternating Hemiplegia. To investigate whether Myshkin mice exhibit learning and

Cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) share clinical and pathological similarities. The defining features are motor p … nd some indications that memantine is helpful. Emerging evidence suggest that physical exercise and cognitive training are also effective, as are some reports of various brain stimulation techniques. Disease-modifying agents that delay the rate of cognitive decline in PD and DLB are urgently needed.

Long-Term Training-Induced Gains of an Auditory Skill in School-Age Children As Compared With Adults.

The few studies that compared auditory skill learning between children and adults found variable results, with only some children reaching adult-like thresholds following training. The present study aimed to assess auditory skill learning in children as compared with adults during single- and multisession training. It was of interest to ascertain whether children who do not reach adult-like performance following a single training session simply require additional training, or whether different mechanisms underlying skill learning need to reach maturity in order to become adult-like performers.

How can we enhance cognitive bias modification techniques? The effects of prospective cognition.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive bias modification for interpretation, a computerized program which manipulates biased interpretations, has shown therapeutic promise, including evidence that negatively biased interpretations can be reduced, leading to corresponding improvements in symptoms. Cognitive bias modification for cognitive errors (CBM-errors) is a second generation CBM-I procedure which manipulates seven types of cognitive error and is especially relevant to depressive cognition. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the effects of the CBM-errors manipulation would be e

Rehabilitation for Impaired Attention in the Acute and Post-Acute Phase After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review.

Impaired attention is the most common and debilitating cognitive deficit following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Attention is a fundamental function that profoundly influences the performance of other cognitive components such as memory and execution. Intriguingly, attention can be improved through cognitive rehabilitation. This narrative review summarizes the essential elements of rehabilitation for attention problems in acute and post-acute TBI. In the acute phase of mild TBI, investigations into the medical history and daily life performance, neurological examination, screening and manage

Improving the functional status of young boxers in the preparatory period of training with biofeedback.

There is little systematic research on how the training load of an athlete in the preparatory period affects their functional state. This study aims to develop and test a new targeted training method for improving the functional state of boxers aged 15-16 (15.6 ± 0.5) years using heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback. A total of 50 teenage male athletes participated in the study. The proposed program involved biofeedback-based physical training coupled with breathing and emotional regulation exercises. Here, the functional status assessment involved psychological (attention, working memory,

Early mobile app training proficiency predicts how well memory-impaired individuals learn to use digital memory aids in the real world.

Functional memory impairment following acquired brain injury can lead to decreased independence. External memory aids such as smartphones can be highly effective compensation tools, but cognitive deficits may create barriers to implementation in daily life. The present study examined predictors of real-world use of mobile calendar applications for memory compensation in an acquired brain injury sample. A retrospective chart review was completed from an outpatient rehabilitation program, extending 15 years into the past, yielding data from 34 eligible participants. All participants demonstrated

The transformative effects of a participatory social empowerment intervention in the MAISHA intimate partner violence trial in Tanzania.

Intimate partner violence is an important public health problem, with far-reaching consequences for women's physical and emotional health and social well-being. There is evidence that intimate partner violence is preventable. The MAISHA study, a randomised controlled trial of the impact of a gender training intervention on intimate partner violence for women in Tanzania, found that those who participated in gender training were less likely to report past-year physical violence. As part of the study, a sample of women participated in longitudinal qualitative enquiry. To better understand the pr

Experimentally modifying interpretations for positive and negative social scenarios in children: a preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Past research suggests that socially anxious individuals display a tendency to interpret ambiguous and clearly valenced information in a threatening way. Interpretation training programs, in which individuals are trained to endorse benign rather than negative interpretations of ambiguous social scenarios, have proven effective for reducing anxiety-related cognitive biases. However, it is not clear whether the same paradigms are effective in modifying interpretation biases for clearly valenced social information. METHOD: In this experiment, a group of unselected children (aged 10-1

Food resources and kitchen skills plus aerobic training (FoRKS+) for black adults with hypertension: A pilot trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Midlife hypertension is associated with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD), suggesting that blood pressure control may be a therapeutic target for dementia prevention. Given excess hypertension in non-Hispanic Black (NHB) adults, blood pressure control may also reduce ADRD disparities. We describe a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a multicomponent lifestyle-based intervention versus enhanced usual care on cognition among middle-aged NHB adults. Mindfulness, psychological resilience, and cognitive reappraisal on athletic performance: a predictive model based on psychological mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness is increasingly viewed as a psychological resource for athletic performance, yet the sequential mechanism through which mindful awareness is translated into performance through cognitive reappraisal and psychological resilience remains insufficiently examined. This study constructed and tested a predictive model linking mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, psychological resilience, and perceived athletic performance among competitive university athletes. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 482 competitive university athletes recruited from
