The procedures associated with the application of a super-frequency electromagnetic field (SFEMF) are being introduced into a therapeutical process in their various modifications at the Pediatric Surgery Hospital of Russian State Medical University. OBJECTIVE: The Multicenter Trial of Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity (CRYO-ROP) assigned eyes with macular heterotopia to the "favorable" outcome category and eyes with retinal fold involving the macula to the "unfavorable" outcome category. This binary assignment did not agree well with measured visual acuity outcome. Intraoperative mitomycin C has been shown to be highly effective in increasing the success rate of glaucoma filtration surgery. Between October 1991 and June 1992, 169 eyes of 156 patients underwent filtration procedures with intraoperative mitomycin C. In the postoperative period, five eyes (2.9%) developed hypotony maculopathy, characterized by disc edema, vascular tortuosity, and chorioretinal folds in the macular area. Five years of experience gained with the CryoCare Extremity Stabilization System (CESS) were evaluated in this study. Twenty-one patients underwent freezing amputation. Five patients died before undergoing surgical amputation. Symptomatic relief, control of odor, decreased demand on nursing staff, and appreciation of the family make this approach valuable even when long-term survival is not anticipated. Squamous cell carcinoma is an uncommon tumor of the cornea in dogs. A 12-year-old Shih Tzu with a history of chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca was diagnosed as having squamous cell carcinoma of the corneoscleral limbus. The lesion was treated by surgical resection and cryotherapy. One year after surgery, multiple tumors, apparently unrelated to the first tumor, appeared on the same cornea. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca may have predisposed the dog to corneal squamous cell carcinoma development.

In the course of ten years the authors operated 69 patients with detachment of the retina (DR) after perforating eye injuries, using cryosurgical methods with silicone episcleral implants. Thirty-nine eyes of 20 premature infants, mean birthweight 922 g, mean gestational age 27 weeks, with active retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), were treated. Fifty-nine patients who underwent cryotherapy on the uterine cervix at University Hospital of Jacksonville between September 1974 and September 1980 subsequently gave birth at that institution. The most usual treatment of neovascular glaucoma is suppression of the production of aqueous by means of coagulation of the ciliary body. In addition to cryocoagulation, diathermic coagulation of the exposed ciliary body by Benedikt and Hiti's method has been applied recently. The results which we obtained in 21 cases with this method are encouraging. In most cases the pain disappeared and the intraocular pressure decreased to below 30 mmHg. In half of the cases cryocoagulation was performed as well as diathermy.
