[External root resorption].

Root resorption may be a physiological (resorption of deciduous teeth) or a pathological process (resorption of permanent teeth). In the latter case an external and an internal form of resorption can be distinguished. Root resorption may occur on one tooth or on several teeth within a dentition and it may be caused by trauma, periodontitis, orthodontic treatment, internal bleaching, cysts, tumors, or by stimuli from a necrotic dental pulp. Current knowledge concerning the pathogenesis of root resorption and therapeutic approaches are presented. For cervical resorption, it is assumed that the s

Clinical, genetic, and biochemical findings in two siblings with Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome (PLS) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and severe periodontitis affecting both primary and secondary dentitions. Cathepsin C (CTSC) gene mutations are etiologic for PLS. The resultant loss of CTSC function is responsible for the severe periodontal destruction seen clinically. METHODS: A 4-year-old female (case 1) and her 10-year-old sister (case 2) presented with palmoplantar skin lesions, tooth mobility, and advanced periodontitis. Based on clinical findings, the cases were diagnosed with PLS. Mutational scre

A systematic review of the consequences of premature birth on palatal morphology, dental occlusion, tooth-crown dimensions, and tooth maturity and eruption.

This systematic review addresses the question whether prematurity results in alteration of palatal morphology, dental occlusion, tooth-crown dimensions, and tooth maturation. A literature survey from the PubMed database covering the period from January 1966 to November 2002 used the Medical Subject Headings terms "infant, premature," and "infant, low birth weight" in combination with "jaws," "dental physiology," "dentition," and "tooth abnormalities." Controlled studies written in English and with definitions of premature birth according to the World Health Organization were selected. Two revi

Epiphyseal union and dental eruption Macaca mulatta.

Age of dental eruption and epiphyseal fusion is estimated for the permanent dentition and long bone epiphyses of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), with 299 skeletons of individuals with known age of death, from the Cayo Santiago skeletal collection. Epiphyses at a given joint tend to have the same time. While males and females tend to have the same pattern of epiphyseal fusion, females' epiphyses fuse earlier than those of malep rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), with 299 skeletons of individuals with known age of death, from the Cayo Santiago skeletal collection. Epiphyses at a given joint ten

The position of the mental foramen on panoramic radiographs of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

UNLABELLED: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant tumor predisposition disorder and a disease with frequent osseous malformations. In the craniomaxillofacial region, bony malformations of NF1 patients are often associated with plexiform neurofibromas (PNF). PNF can manifest early in life and often have a topographical relationship to the branches of the trigeminal nerve. It is unclear when these nerve sheath tumors interact with the skeleton. Since tooth and bone development can be correlated with stages of prenatal development, a fixed point of mandibular ossification, the t

Gingivitis and Its Causes in Children Aged 3-7 Years.

OBJECTIVES: Gingivitis manifests as redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gingiva but no loss of connective tissue attachment. It is usually painless and rarely leads to spontaneous bleeding, and most patients are unaware of the disease or are unable to recognize it. In children and adolescents, it is most often caused by plaque accumulation. The purpose of the following study was to determine the prevalence of gingivitis and its causes in children aged 3 to 7 years. METHODS: Patients were classed in the following three age groups: 3-year-olds, 5-year-olds, and 7-year-olds, who were generall

Idiopathic Gingival Enlargement: A Case Report.

Gingival enlargement (GE) is an increase in the size of the gingiva. It may be due to inflammation caused by extensive plaque accumulation, intake of drugs, systemic conditions like pregnancy and puberty, systemic diseases such as leukemia or Wegener's granulomatosis, hereditary gingival fibromatosis, and neoplastic or false enlargement. Idiopathic GE is the massive increase in the size of the gingiva with an unknown etiology. It may have a hereditary basis, be linked to physical impairment, or begin with eruption of primary or permanent dentition. It is also referred as gingivomatosis, heredi

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL CORRELATES OF MASTICATORY MUSCLES IN NASAL AND ORAL BREATHING MODES.

Type of breathing (nasal, oral, oronasal) can turn out to be a causative factor for (or result of) orthodontic anomalies alongside the respiratory-metabolic disorders. Consequently, assessment of functional characteristics of the masticatory apparatus, which differ in oral and nasal breathing modes, could be of interest for the evaluation of the degree of orthodontic dysfunction and formation of an effective individualized treatment plan. Aim of the study was to assess electrophysiologic characteristics of the masticatory muscles bilaterally in nasal and oral breathing modes. The study was con

17-year Follow-up after Mandibular Distraction Performed in an Infant with Robin Sequence.

Robin sequence is a congenital anomaly, first described by Pierre Robin as a triad of micrognathia, upper airway obstruction and glossoptosis. The most significant airway management technique is the use of distraction osteogenesis to advance the mandible. On the other hand, late complications such as permanent dentition loss and malformation of the damaged teeth have been reported. Therefore, long-term follow-up after mandibular distraction is important. In our case report, we describe 17 years of follow-up after mandibular distraction performed in a 4-month-old male infant with Robin sequence

Ontogenetic and life history trait changes associated with convergent ecological specializations in extinct ungulate mammals.

Investigating life history traits in mammals is crucial to understand their survival in changing environments. However, these parameters are hard to estimate in a macroevolutionary context. Here we show that the use of dental ontogenetic parameters can provide clues to better understand the adaptive nature of phenotypic traits in extinct species such as South American notoungulates. This recently extinct order of mammals evolved in a context of important geological, climatic, and environmental variations. Interestingly, notoungulates were mostly herbivorous and acquired high-crowned teeth very

Exploring the multitude of risk factors associated with early childhood caries.

CONTEXT: Despite efforts in restorative therapy, children who experience Early Childhood Caries (ECC) continue to be at a higher risk for new lesions in both the primary and the permanent dentition. Early interventions which disrupt the pathobiology of caries need identification of all the causative or risk factors. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study dealt with the prevalence and associated risk factors of ECC among preschool children aged 3 to 5 years in Bengaluru city. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information regarding risk factors was obtained through a structured questionnaire among a random samp
